Jillian Dagon Andolina, age 26 of 24 Meadowbrook, Arkport, died Saturday evening (May 11, 2013) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a courageous 2 ½ year battle with Leukemia.

Born in Hornell on January 17, 1987, she was the daughter of Dr. Richard and Molly (Dagon) Andolina.

Jill grew up in Arkport and was a graduate of Arkport Central School, Class of 2005. She attended SUNY at Alfred, graduating with an associate’s degree in 2007. In 2009, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from SUNY at Geneseo. Jill’s plan to obtain her Master’s Degree was interrupted when she was diagnosed with leukemia on November 12, 2010.

Jill was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. She was also a member of the Hornell Association and the Arkport American Legion Post 1248 Auxiliary. A self-proclaimed “Country Concert Queen” she enjoyed attending her favorite country music concerts with her numerous friends. Jill was a dedicated fan of The Ohio State University football team, attending numerous games over the years. She was such a fan that she named her dog Buckeye. A lover of the outdoors, she always looked forward to her family’s annual summer fishing trip to Canada. Jill was a frequent visitor and volunteer at the Hornell Humane Society and very active in Relay for Life.

Jill will forever be remembered for her brave and fearless fight against cancer. Throughout her treatment, she inspired family, friends, and the loving medical community with her ability to keep a smile on her face while fighting this dreaded disease. She never complained, even while facing the numerous effects associated with aggressive chemotherapy and two bone marrow transplants. Jill continually showed courage in the face of adversity, found humor when tears should have prevailed, and an ability to comfort her family and friends when she herself deserved comfort. Right up to the very end, Jill taught everyone the true meaning of being tough. On April 13, 2013 she posted in Facebook the following: “I love all of you so much! And it can’t go unseen on how much I cherish and appreciate all the support from family, friends, and the community.” Those who knew Jill realize that a kinder or more appreciative person never touched their lives. She truly will be missed.

Jill was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Elsie Andolina, and her maternal grandfather, James Dagon.

In addition to her parents, Jill is survived by her three loving and protective brothers, Dr. Richard Andolina, Jr. of Buffalo, Dr. Nicholas Andolina of Alexandria, VA, and Mitchell Andolina of Arkport; her paternal grandfather, Frank Andolina of Wellsville; her maternal grandmother, Marieka Dagon of North Hornell; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Jill’s family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday at St. Ann’s Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Jillian Andolina Scholarship Fund at Arkport Central School, East Ave., Arkport, NY 14807; the Hornell Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Road, Hornell, NY 14843 or the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, C/O Mike Ellis, Strong Memorial Hospital, 601 Elmwood Ave., Box 650, Rochester, NY 14642. Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.

As special consideration to Jill, please consider joining the bone marrow registry to give the hope of life to those affected by blood cancers. For more information, please visit www.marrow.org

Mary Louise (Sayles) Allison – 88 – died early Wednesday morning (April 24, 2013) at St. James Mercy Hospital where she had been a patient for ten days.

On January 24, 1925, a day of a total eclipse of the sun, Mary was born at Bethesda Hospital, the fifth child of Stephen Fred Sayles and Irene Weld Sayles.

Mary grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1943). She was first, and always, a caregiver. Babysitting since the age of 12, she chose nursing as a career, graduated from the University of Rochester and worked on the maternity ward at Bethesda Hospital. For many years she also taught classes to expectant mothers.

In June of 1951, Mary met Sindal Burton “Burt” Allison at a strawberry social. They married six months later. He predeceased her July 3, 1995.

Mary looked forward to becoming a mother and she and Burt were blessed with three daughters and a son. Stephen Burton Allison died in 1959 on a sad day that changed Mary forever. She began a search for truth, needing absolute assurance that she would one day be reunited with Stephen.

She became a born-again Christian in 1970 after which she freely testified to everyone – friends, family, strangers, and telemarketers – that she had a baby boy, he died, and she was going to see him again someday because of Jesus. After becoming born-again, she resigned from nursing. She put all of her care-giving energies into her family – her youngest child, her husband, and her aging mother who she attended to lovingly for a decade. Burton contracted ALS and she served as caregiver for the next decade.

In her youth, Mary enjoyed watching Shirley Temple movies and would learn all of the tap dancing routines that she observed while watching the movies. Later, she would perform these routines for her family. Mary continued her love of tap dancing her entire life. In later years, she enjoyed gardening and working on crossword puzzles.

In addition to her parents, husband & son, Mary was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Harold “Red” Sayles and Shirley “Chick” Sayles; 1 sister, Fannie Roblin; her much-loved son-in-law, David Boag.

Surviving are 3 daughters, Martha (Dennis) Stearns of Brighton, NY, Nancy (Nick) Berger of Garrison, NY and Susan (Chet Simons) Allison of Hornell; five grandchildren, Christopher (Michelle) Stearns of New York City, Rebecca Stearns, Ph. D., of Connecticut, Jennilyn Boag (Robert) Pickering of Brighton, Colleen Irene Boag of Los Angeles, and Amanda Stearns of Philadelphia; great-grandson, John David Pickering is a happy, bright 21-month old who brings delight to Allison family members who will share their memories of Mary with him and tell him of her life story. Mary’s sister Genevieve Harding of Austin, Texas, has faithfully stayed in touch, making calls to Hornell to talk with her sister, and she will miss those conversations. Mary also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, various relatives in the Sayles, Weld, Nicholson, Conderman and Allison families, and kind neighbors who watched out for her in later years. She will also be sadly missed by her beloved sheltie, “Teddy”.

Since September 16, 1959, Mary Sayles Allison has longed for the day she would see her son again. That joyful reunion has begun and everyone who loved her rejoices.

At Mary’s request there will be no calling hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. To leave an online condolence or share a memory, visit www.dagonfuneralhome.com

Korb – 20 – of 7 Hakes Ave., Hornell, died unexpectedly Saturday evening (April 20, 2013) at his home.

Born in Dansville on May 23, 1992, he was the son of Wendy (Creech) Korb and Russell Korb.

Sawyer grew up in Arkport and attended Arkport Central School through his sophomore year. While living in Arkport, he played soccer and excelled on the baseball field. Sawyer was a gifted pitcher in the Arkport Junior Baseball League, the Hornell Babe Ruth Baseball League and as a member of the Arkport High School (Blue Jays) Baseball Team. During his sophomore year, Sawyer received the Outstanding Citizen Award.

He resided in Wellsville during his junior & senior years where, again he played soccer and pitched for the Wellsville Lions Baseball Team. As a senior, Sawyer helped pitch Wellsville to a Section V championship and into the state tournament. In just two seasons he was 15-5 and his 137 strikeouts his senior year is second all-time in school history. Sawyer was named the MVP on defense his senior year, a Big 30 All-Star and an all-state selection.

Sawyer attended Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua for 2 years where, once again, he excelled as a pitcher on the baseball team. He was scouted by several Major League Baseball Teams including the New York Yankees. He was hoping to further his education and his pitching career at Mansfield University.

As much as Sawyer excelled on the baseball field, he will undoubtedly be remembered for his ever-present smile, “happy-go-lucky” attitude and his wonderful sense of humor. He seemed to take on the role of “Big Brother” to his many friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He will be sadly missed by everyone that had the good fortune of knowing him!

Sawyer was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Patricia Novara.

Surviving are his mother, Wendy Korb of Hornell; his father, Russell Korb of Syracuse; 3 brothers, Sgt. Justin (Irania) Korb of Ft. Drum, Watertown, NY, Skylar Korb of Hornell and Austin Korb of Hornell; his maternal grandfather, Eugene Creech of Skaneateles; paternal grandmother, Donna Korb of Tallahassee, FL; 2 nephews, Dylan Korb and Nathaniel Korb; 1 niece, Justine Korb; several aunts & uncles.

The family of Sawyer S. Korb will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where a Memorial Service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 7:00 PM with Rev. Mason Sorensen officiating.

Sawyer’s family request that memorial contributions in his name be made to the Hornell YMCA Pool Fund, 18 Center St., Hornell, NY 14843. Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.
