Mary Ann Nicoloff

Mary Ann Nicoloff – 82 – of 49440 North Central Ave., New River, AZ, 85027, formerly of Hornell & Wellsville, died Saturday (December 21, 2013) at John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix, AZ following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on April 14, 1931, she was the daughter of Kenneth & Mary (Piller) Cosgrove. 

Mary Ann grew up in Hornell and from 1931 – 1953 and was a proud resident of Hornell’s Old 5th Ward, affectionately known as “The Bloody 5th”.  She was a graduate of Hornell High School class of 1949 (“The 49ers”) and later graduated from St. James School of Nursing (class of 1952) where she received her registered nurses license.

She was married in 1953 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in Orchard Park, NY to Nicholas A. “Nick” Nicoloff who survives.  From 1953 – 1954 they resided in Buffalo where Mary Ann worked as a registered nurse at Kenmore Mercy Hospital. 

From 1954 – 1985, Mary Ann & Nick lived in Wellsville where she was employed at Jones Memorial Hospital and also as a Private Duty Nurse.  While residing in Wellsville, they owned & operated Nicoloff’s Wines & Spirits and Mary Ann was also a broker and co-owner of Century 21 Southern Hills Realty. 

In 1985, they moved to Scottsdale, AZ where they resided until moving to New River, AZ in 1993.  For many years, Mary Ann was employed as a registered nurse at John C. Lincoln / Phoenix General Hospital and was a member of Mission of the Good Shepherd Church. 

Mary Ann was an overall lover of animals. She owned and operated Hillcroft Kennels in Wellsville, NY where she raised and showed German Shepherds. She raised Nubian goats for milk. She was an avid horseback rider-something she passed on to her daughter and granddaughter (Nicole Trotter). Mary Ann was a charter member of the Canisteo Valley Riding Club. She was a leader for 4-H (teaching Dog Obedience in Wellsville for many years) and the 4 Penny Pony Club.

She was very active in the Kiwanis organization in New River, serving as secretary for a number of years, as well as a leader of the local Key Club and BUGS (Bringing Up Grades) program. She was a charter member and in 2004 helped to start the CERT (Community Emergency of Response Teams) group in New River. She helped to organize and run a wine tasting club in Wellsville (Les Amis du Vin).  She was also an avid reader, loved to sew and always enjoyed good conversation.

In addition to her parents, Mary Ann was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Anne-Marie who died in 1968.

Surviving are her husband, Nicholas A. “Nick” Nicoloff of New River, AZ; her children, Dr. Stephen J (Cindy) Nicoloff of Peoria, AZ, James P. (Michele) Nicoloff of Hornell, Michael J. (Cynthia) Nicoloff of Orlando, FL, Mary Catherine (Dr. Timothy) Trotter of Edmond, OK and John F. (Amy) Nicoloff of Phoenix, AZ;  her sister, Margaret C (Nicholas) Changose of Glendale, AZ; as well as 10 grandchildren; and many nieces & nephews.

At Mary Ann’s request there will be no calling hours.  A Memorial Mass & Graveside Service will be celebrated (later this summer) at a time & date to be announced.  Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.
