{"id":1275,"date":"2013-04-26T17:08:39","date_gmt":"2013-04-26T17:08:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/?p=1275"},"modified":"2013-04-29T21:24:36","modified_gmt":"2013-04-29T21:24:36","slug":"mary-s-allison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/?p=1275","title":{"rendered":"Mary Louise Allison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/?attachment_id=1276\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1276\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1276\" title=\"Mary Allison Photo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Mary-Allison-Photo-250x283.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Mary-Allison-Photo-250x283.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Mary-Allison-Photo-200x226.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Mary-Allison-Photo.jpg 638w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mary Louise (Sayles) Allison \u2013 88 \u2013 died early Wednesday morning (April 24, 2013) at St. James Mercy Hospital where she had been a patient for ten days.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On January 24, 1925, a day of a total eclipse of the sun, Mary was born at Bethesda Hospital, the fifth child of\u00a0Stephen Fred Sayles and Irene Weld Sayles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mary grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1943). She was first, and always, a caregiver. Babysitting since the age of 12, she chose nursing as a career, graduated from the University of Rochester and worked on the maternity ward at Bethesda Hospital. \u00a0For many years she also taught\u00a0 classes to expectant mothers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In June of 1951, Mary met\u00a0Sindal Burton \u201cBurt\u201d Allison at a strawberry social. They married six months later.\u00a0 He predeceased her July 3, 1995.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Mary looked forward to becoming a mother and she and Burt were blessed with three daughters and a son.\u00a0 Stephen Burton Allison died in 1959 on a sad day that changed Mary forever.\u00a0 She began a search for truth, needing absolute assurance that she would one day be reunited with Stephen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She became a born-again Christian in 1970 after which she freely testified to everyone \u2013 friends, family, strangers, and telemarketers \u2013 that she had a baby boy, he died, and she was going to see him again someday because of Jesus.\u00a0 After becoming born-again, she resigned from nursing. She put all of her care-giving energies into her family &#8211; her youngest child, her husband, and her aging mother who she attended to lovingly for a decade. \u00a0Burton contracted ALS and she\u00a0served as\u00a0caregiver for the next decade.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In her youth, Mary enjoyed watching Shirley Temple movies and would learn all of the tap dancing routines that she observed while watching the movies.\u00a0 Later, she would perform these routines for her family. \u00a0Mary continued her love of tap dancing her entire life.\u00a0 In later years, she enjoyed gardening and working on crossword puzzles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her parents, husband &amp; son, Mary was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Harold \u201cRed\u201d Sayles and Shirley \u201cChick\u201d Sayles; 1 sister, Fannie Roblin; her much-loved son-in-law, David Boag.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Surviving are 3 daughters, Martha (Dennis) Stearns of Brighton, NY, Nancy (Nick) Berger of Garrison, NY and Susan (Chet Simons)\u00a0Allison of Hornell; five grandchildren, Christopher (Michelle) Stearns of New York City, Rebecca Stearns, Ph. D., of Connecticut, Jennilyn Boag (Robert) Pickering of Brighton, Colleen Irene Boag of Los Angeles, and Amanda Stearns of Philadelphia; great-grandson, John David Pickering is a happy, bright 21-month old who brings delight to Allison family members who will share their memories of Mary with him and tell him of her life story.\u00a0 Mary&#8217;s sister Genevieve Harding of Austin, Texas, has faithfully stayed in touch, making calls to\u00a0Hornell to talk with her sister, and she will miss those conversations. Mary also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, various relatives in the Sayles, Weld, Nicholson, Conderman and Allison families, and kind neighbors who watched out for her in later years.\u00a0 She will also be sadly missed by her beloved sheltie, \u201cTeddy\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Since September 16, 1959, Mary Sayles Allison has longed for the day she would see her son again.
