Nilsen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/?attachment_id=2276\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2276\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2276\" title=\"Robert Nilsen Photo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Robert-Nilsen-Photo-200x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Robert-Nilsen-Photo-200x206.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Robert-Nilsen-Photo-250x257.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Robert-Nilsen-Photo.jpg 513w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Robert W. \u201cBob\u201d Nilsen \u2013 (84) \u2013 of 10 West Ave., Arkport, died early Wednesday morning (February 3, 2016) at his home, following a long illness.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Brooklyn, NY on March 29, 1931, he was the son of Nikolai &amp; Anna (Jacobsen) Nilsen.<\/p>\n<p>Bob grew up in Brooklyn where he attended High School.\u00a0 He was a veteran of the US Navy during the Korean Conflict, serving his country from 1949 \u2013 1952 as a member of the US Navy Seabees.\u00a0 While in the Navy, Bob was stationed in several locations, including Guam and Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>Following his honorable discharge from the US Navy, Bob was employed for a time at the American Machine &amp; Foundry.\u00a0 He later worked (as a civilian) for Military Sea Transport Service (MSTS) transporting troops overseas.<\/p>\n<p>For about 5 years, Bob owned &amp; operated a car wash in Brooklyn and for over 20 years worked as a cab driver &amp; limo driver in New York City, retiring in the early 1990\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Bob was an avid New York Mets fan and also enjoyed rooting for the New York Giants football team.\u00a0 He liked working on crossword puzzles and playing cards.<\/p>\n<p>He was preceded in death by his daughter, Abigail Nilsen who died in 1971; 1 sister, Solveig \u201cSue\u201d Marron.<\/p>\n<p>He was married on October 17, 1962 to the former Joanne Marino who survives.\u00a0 Also surviving are 4 sons, Sam (Jit) Nilsen of Windham, NY, Bryan Nilsen of Staten Island, John (Coleen) Nilsen of Baldwinsville, NY and Nicholas (Erin) Nilsen of Webster; 6 grandchildren; several nieces &amp; nephews.<\/p>\n<p>At Bob\u2019s request there will be no calling hours or services.\u00a0 Arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.<\/p>\n<p>Bob\u2019s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name be made to St. Ann\u2019s Academy, PO Box 446, Hornell, NY 14842.<\/p>\n<p>In recognition of Bob\u2019s service to his country while serving in the US Navy, the American Flag at the Dagon Funeral Home will be flown at half-staff.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Robert W. \u201cBob\u201d Nilsen \u2013 (84) \u2013 of 10 West Ave., Arkport, died early Wednesday morning (February 3, 2016) at his home, following a long illness.
