{"id":4550,"date":"2020-08-22T12:34:33","date_gmt":"2020-08-22T12:34:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/?p=4550"},"modified":"2020-08-22T17:43:00","modified_gmt":"2020-08-22T17:43:00","slug":"walter-walt-cleveland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/?p=4550","title":{"rendered":"Walter L. &#8220;Walt&#8221; Cleveland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4554\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Walter-Cleveland-Photo-.PNG.jpg-200x277.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Walter-Cleveland-Photo-.PNG.jpg-200x277.png 200w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Walter-Cleveland-Photo-.PNG.jpg-250x346.png 250w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Walter-Cleveland-Photo-.PNG.jpg-768x1063.png 768w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Walter-Cleveland-Photo-.PNG.jpg.png 802w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Walter L. \u201cWalt\u201d Cleveland \u2013 85 \u2013 of 88 Myrtle Ave., Hornell, died Friday afternoon (August 21, 2020) at Highland Hospital in Rochester, following a long illness.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Deposit, NY on August 25, 1934, he was the son of James &amp; Irene (Caffrey) Cleveland.<\/p>\n<p>Walt grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1953).\u00a0 While in high school, he worked at the former Seneca Bowl (AKA Seneca Lanes) as a \u201cPin Setter\u201d and was paid 10 cents per game. Following high school graduation, he began working at the Erie Railroad, primarily as a fireman.<\/p>\n<p>In 1957, Walt was drafted into the US Army.\u00a0 Before being inducted, however, he married the former Santa Petrelli on June 1, 1957.\u00a0 Together they resided in several locations, including Nuremburg, Germany until Walt\u2019s Honorable Discharge in 1959.<\/p>\n<p>Following his discharge from the military, Walt &amp; Santa returned to the Hornell area and Walt resumed working at the Erie Railroad.\u00a0 Walt continued his employment with the railroad (Erie, Erie Lackawanna &amp; Conrail) until his retirement as an engineer in 1996 following 43 total years of service.<\/p>\n<p>Walt was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann\u2019s Church.\u00a0 He had been a member of the Hornell Knights of Columbus, G. Carducci Lodge (Sons of Italy), the Hornell American Legion and the Hornell Association.<\/p>\n<p>An avid card player, Walt spent countless hours playing Gin with his buddies at the various clubs at which he belonged.\u00a0 He also loved taking trips to Las Vegas, playing cards and other games of chance at the casinos.\u00a0 Walt enjoyed growing vegetables, especially garlic, and was happy to share it with his family &amp; friends.\u00a0 He also loved making \u201cDandelion Wine\u201d and, again, sharing with family &amp; friends.<\/p>\n<p>He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Santa Cleveland, who died April 8, 2020; 3 brothers, James Cleveland, John Cleveland and Edward Cleveland.<\/p>\n<p>Surviving are 3 sons, Walter (Joyce) Cleveland of Hornell, Mark Cleveland of Cohocton and Daniel Cleveland of Buffalo; 1 daughter, Mary (Fred) Klindt of Cohocton; 5 grandchildren, Jessica Cleveland, Sarah (Kristian) Bourdage, Heath Cleveland, Elizabeth Klindt and Kelsey Klindt; 1 great-grandson, Tristan Bourdage; several nieces &amp; nephews.<\/p>\n<p>The family of Walter L. \u201cWalt\u201d Cleveland will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00 PM \u2013 8:00 PM at the <strong>Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.\u00a0 <\/strong>A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at St. Mary\u2019s Cemetery with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.<\/p>\n<p>Walt\u2019s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name be made to St. Jude Children\u2019s Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept. 300, Memphis, TN\u00a0 38148.\u00a0 Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Walter L. \u201cWalt\u201d Cleveland \u2013 85 \u2013 of 88 Myrtle Ave., Hornell, died Friday afternoon (August 21, 2020) at Highland Hospital in Rochester, following a long illness.
