Smith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4568\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Thomas-Smith-Photo-200x247.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Thomas-Smith-Photo-200x247.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Thomas-Smith-Photo-250x309.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Thomas-Smith-Photo-1024x1265.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Thomas-Smith-Photo-768x949.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Thomas-Smith-Photo-1243x1536.jpg 1243w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Thomas-Smith-Photo-1657x2048.jpg 1657w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Thomas-Smith-Photo.jpg 1888w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Thomas J. \u201cTom\u201d Smith \u2013 83 \u2013 of West Lake Road (Keuka Lake), Pulteney, NY died peacefully Friday morning (September 4, 2020) at his home, following a courageous battle with cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Dansville, NY, Tom grew up in Hornell and attended the former Lincoln School. \u00a0He later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1957).\u00a0 Following high school graduation, he attended Alfred State College for one year.\u00a0 In 1959 he enlisted in the US Army where he served for three years.\u00a0 While in the army, Tom took classes specializing in pharmacy and hospital lab technology.\u00a0\u00a0 Following his honorable discharge in 1962, he took advantage of the GI Bill and continued his education by taking night classes and earned a dual Bachelor\u2019s Degree at Brockport State University.<\/p>\n<p>He was married on May 23, 1959 to the former Carole Secondo.\u00a0 They resided in Attica, NY for about four years where Tom was employed as a pharmacist tech at Crystal Pharmacy.\u00a0 From 1966-1994 Tom &amp; Carole lived in Batavia where Tom was employed at the Batavia Veteran\u2019s Hospital, from 1962-1994, first as a Lab Technician and eventually as Lab Supervisor, retiring in 1994 following 32 years of service.<\/p>\n<p>They moved to Pulteney, NY (Keuka Lake) in 1994 and have spent the winter months in Lake Alfred, FL since 2004.\u00a0 While in Pulteney, they attended St. Michael\u2019s Church in Penn Yan and while in Florida attended St. Joseph\u2019s Church of Winter Haven, FL.<\/p>\n<p>Tom always enjoyed \u201cworking with his hands\u201d and helped build his home in Batavia, doing most of the electrical and plumbing work.\u00a0 He especially loved installing the ceramic tiles in the kitchen &amp; bathrooms.\u00a0 He had been a member of the Batavia Elks Lodge and a member of their bowling team.\u00a0 He was also an avid golfer, primarily playing in Florida and enjoyed rooting for the Buffalo Bills.\u00a0 Throughout the years, Tom loved hunting &amp; fishing, especially with his \u201cSecondo Family\u201d in Hornell.<\/p>\n<p>He was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Dunham Strobel, stepfather LaVerne Strobel, his son, Thomas Patrick Smith (1984); brothers, Gary Strobel (1977) and William Smith (2011); his sister-in-law, Josephine Secondo Didsbury (2006).<\/p>\n<p>Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Carole Secondo Smith; daughter, Cheri (Wayne) Grenier of Apalachian, NY;\u00a0 grandson, Michael (Jessica) Grenier; granddaughters, Jillian Grenier and Corinne (Bryan) Knapick; great-grandsons, Samuel Grenier and Eric Grenier; his Hornell in-laws, Jerry (Margie) Secondo and Tom (Mary) Secondo; brother-in-law, Bernie Didsbury of Arizona and sister-in-law, Sally Smith of Orchard Park, NY; several nieces &amp; nephews.<\/p>\n<p>At Tom\u2019s request there will be no calling hours.\u00a0 A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 11<sup>th <\/sup>at 10 AM at St. Ann\u2019s Church in Hornell with final interment in Bath National Cemetery, Bath, NY.<\/p>\n<p>Funeral arrangements are in care of the <strong>Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tom\u2019s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name be made to Pulteney Free Library, Pulteney, NY or CareFirst Hospice, 3805 Meads Creek Rd., Painted Post, NY\u00a0 14870<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thomas J. \u201cTom\u201d Smith \u2013 83 \u2013 of West Lake Road (Keuka Lake), Pulteney, NY died peacefully Friday morning (September 4, 2020) at his home, following a courageous battle with cancer.
