{"id":5669,"date":"2022-05-14T11:48:37","date_gmt":"2022-05-14T11:48:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/?p=5669"},"modified":"2022-05-27T16:53:13","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T16:53:13","slug":"harold-hal-severin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/?p=5669","title":{"rendered":"Harold &#8220;Hal&#8221; Severin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5708\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Harold-Severin-Photo-2-250x332.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Harold-Severin-Photo-2-250x332.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Harold-Severin-Photo-2-200x265.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Harold-Severin-Photo-2.jpg 452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Harold \u201cHal\u201d Severin \u2013 93 \u2013 of Falls Church, VA, formerly of Hornell, died unexpectedly on Friday (May 13, 2022) at his home.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Paterson, NJ on April 6, 1929, he was the son of Willy &amp; Charlotte (Trinkaus) Severin.<\/p>\n<p>Hal grew up in the Bronx, NY where he resided until the age of 10 when his family moved to Leipzig, Germany.\u00a0 As a US citizen living in Germany\u00a0during WWII, he graduated from high school and returned to the United States when he was 17 years old.\u00a0 He was a graduate of Alfred University where he received his bachelor\u2019s degree in Ceramic Engineering.\u00a0\u00a0Hal worked as a Ceramic Engineer for American Standard, Brockway Glass (Owens Illinois) and Manville until his retirement in 1992.<\/p>\n<p>From 1954-1956, Hal served in the US Army.\u00a0 Because he spoke fluent German, he was stationed in Verdun, France and served as a radio operator.<\/p>\n<p>Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Hal returned to the Hornell area where he married Patricia \u201cPat\u201d Egmond on September 29, 1956, whom he had met in Hornell prior to his service in the Army.\u00a0 Throughout the years, Hal &amp; Pat and their family resided in many locations.\u00a0 From 1956 \u2013 1967 they lived in Pinole, CA and from 1967 \u2013 1979 they resided in Brockway, PA.\u00a0 In 1979 they moved to Littleton, CO and later moved to Perrysburg, OH where they lived until moving to the Hornell \u2013 Canisteo area in 1992.\u00a0 They moved to Tappahannock, VA where they resided until moving to Falls Church, VA in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Hal was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and had been a communicant of both St. Ignatius Loyola Church and St. Ann\u2019s Church and sang in both choirs.\u00a0In addition to singing in the choir he was an active lector and cantor, including St. Tobias in Brockway, PA, St. Timothy\u2019s in Tappahannock, VA, and Queen of Apostles in Alexandria, VA. He was a member of the Teutonia M\u00e4nnerchor of Toledo, Ohio, and performed in many local community musicals and operas over the years.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0For many years, he volunteered his time serving as a driver for the\u00a0Faith in Action of Steuben County serving the Amish Community, taking them to doctor\u2019s appointments.\u00a0 He was a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan,\u00a0a more recent Washington Nationals fan,\u00a0and loved playing fantasy baseball with his daughters.\u00a0 Hal enjoyed genealogy and doing family research and indexing files on family history,\u00a0most especially translating church records from German to English.<\/p>\n<p>He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia \u201cPat\u201d Severin who died January 28, 2018; his brother, Norman Severin, and his parents.<\/p>\n<p>Surviving are\u00a01 son, Michael Severin of Lakewood, CO;\u00a04 daughters Barbara Severin of Herndon, VA, Monica (Tony) Palombella of Midlothian, VA, Mary (Kevin) O\u2019Brien of Arlington, VA and Theresa Severin of Alexandria,VA; \u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">4<\/span>\u00a0grandchildren Shyanne Severin, Lily Severin, Laura Palombella and Mark Palombella;\u00a01 great-grandson Logan Friend;\u00a0half-brother Michael Just of Germany; many nieces &amp; nephews.<\/p>\n<p>At Hal\u2019s request there will be no calling hours.\u00a0 A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday (June 3, 2022) at 10:00 AM at St. Ann\u2019s Church in Hornell.\u00a0 Final interment will be in St. Mary\u2019s Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.<\/p>\n<p>Hal\u2019s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name be made to World Central Kitchen <a href=\"https:\/\/wck.org\/\">https:\/\/wck.org\/<\/a> and Capital Caring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalcaring.org\/\">https:\/\/www.capitalcaring.org\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To leave an online condolence or share a memory, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\">www.dagonfuneralhome.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harold \u201cHal\u201d Severin \u2013 93 \u2013 of Falls Church, VA, formerly of Hornell, died unexpectedly on Friday (May 13, 2022) at his home.
