Carmen A. Cartella \u2013 (83) \u2013 formerly of Hornell, died early Tuesday morning (March 29, 2011) at St. John\u2019s Home in Rochester where he had resided for the past five years.<\/p>\n
Born in Hornell on June 21, 1927, he was the son of Pietro & Mary \u201cMinnie\u201d (Rechichi) Cartella.<\/p>\n
Carmen was a graduate of St. Ann\u2019s School, Hornell High School and Alfred State College (Class of 1956).\u00a0 He was an Air Force Veteran having served in the Philippine Islands.<\/p>\n
He had been employed at the former Erie Railroad and later Conrail in the car shops, retiring after 38 \u00bd years of service.<\/p>\n
A member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann\u2019s Church, Carmen was a member of Our Lady Chapel Rosary Society.\u00a0 For over 20 years, he went on retreat at the Notre Dame Retreat House in Canandaigua.<\/p>\n
Carmen was a long time member of the Hornell Knights of Columbus, Hornell American Legion and the G. Carducci Lodge (Sons of Italy).<\/p>\n
He was preceded in death by his brothers Angelo Cartella, Francis Cartella and Joseph Cartella.<\/p>\n
Surviving are his brother, Peter (Mitzi) Cartella of Rochester; his sister-in-law, Jane Cartella; his uncle, Tony Rechichi; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews great-great nieces and great-great nephews.<\/p>\n
At Carmen\u2019s request there will be no calling hours.\u00a0 A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11:00 AM at St. Ann\u2019s Church with burial in St. Ann\u2019s Cemetery.<\/p>\n
Carmen\u2019s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name be made to St. Ann\u2019s Church, 343 Canisteo St., Hornell, NY.<\/p>\n
