{"id":6243,"date":"2023-02-07T12:17:57","date_gmt":"2023-02-07T12:17:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/?p=6243"},"modified":"2023-02-08T21:50:20","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T21:50:20","slug":"jacob-jake-flaitz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/?p=6243","title":{"rendered":"Jacob &#8220;Jake&#8221; Flaitz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Jacob-Flaitz-Photo-250x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Jacob-Flaitz-Photo-250x351.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Jacob-Flaitz-Photo-200x281.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Jacob-Flaitz-Photo.jpg 427w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Hornell, New York<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob W. \u201cJake\u201d Flaitz \u2013 91 \u2013 of Hornell, died early Tuesday morning (February 7, 2023) at Elderwood at Hornell Nursing Facility, where he had resided for the past 10 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born in Hornell on January 13, 1932, he was the son of Leon &amp; Lena (Saxton) Flaitz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jake grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1951).\u00a0 While in high school, he excelled in sports and served as co-captain of the HHS Football and was a starting guard on the HHS Basketball teams.\u00a0 However, his \u201cbest sport\u201d was baseball where he eventually signed a minor league contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers (MLB).\u00a0 In 1993, Jake was honored by being elected to the Hornell High School Sports Hall of Fame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following high school graduation, Jake was employed for a time as a house painter, working with Al Chapman and Hud Coogan.\u00a0 He was a Veteran of the US Navy, serving his country from 1952 \u2013 1956.\u00a0 While in the Navy, Jake traveled throughout the world including the Mediterranean Sea and visiting many countries including Greece &amp; Italy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For about 7 years, Jake resided in Niagara Falls, NY where he began working for New York Telephone.\u00a0 In 1964 he moved back to his beloved Hornell and continued working for New York Telephone which later became NYNEX and Verizon.\u00a0 He retired as a lineman and cable splicer in 1992 following 35 years of service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jake was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church and later St. Ann\u2019s Church.\u00a0 He was also a member of the Hornell American Legion, the Hornell Moose Lodge and a proud \u201ccard-carrying\u201d member of the Communication Workers of America (CWA) Union.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For over 10 years, Jake served as a youth football coach in Hornell.\u00a0 The Cowboys, his Midget Football team had a 4 year stretch where they were undefeated.\u00a0 He was a Hornell Grasshopper Baseball Coach for several years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following his retirement, Jake became somewhat of a golfing fanatic and would \u201chit the links\u201d every chance he got.\u00a0 He also became an accomplished carpenter &amp; cabinet maker and would create beautiful, custom-made bookcases, tables and TV stands, often spending many hours in his basement fine-tuning his craft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jake was married on November 13, 1957 to the former M. Elaine Delaney who died October 21, 1977.\u00a0 On September 27, 1980 he married the former Mary Brody Madau who died December 19, 2016.\u00a0 He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca Flaitz; his son, Andrew \u201cAndy\u201d Flaitz; 5 brothers, Sam Flaitz, Richard \u201cDick\u201d Flaitz, George Flaitz, Donald Flaitz and Robert \u201cBob\u201d Flaitz; 2 sisters, Geraldine \u201cDean\u201d McLane and Kathryn House.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surviving are 3 sons, Jacob (Kelly) Flaitz, Jr. of Conesus, NY, Timothy Flaitz of Rochester and Thomas (Tonia) Flaitz of Hornell and a daughter, Patricia \u201cTrish\u201d (Bud) Paris of Warren, PA; a step-son, Anthony (Patti) Madau of Leroy, NY; his sisters-in-law, Donna Flaitz and Dolores Flaitz; 12 grandchildren, Jacob Andrew Flaitz, Alex Flaitz, Justyn Schumaker and Julia Flaitz; Haylie (Jariot) Spicer, Sydney Paris, Tori (Patrick) Morris, Beau Paris, Teagan Paris, Lexi Paris, Antonio Madau and Peter Madau; 2 great-grandchildren; many nieces &amp; nephews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Jake\u2019s request there will be no calling hours.\u00a0 A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at St. Ann\u2019s Church.\u00a0 Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Mary\u2019s Cemetery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jake\u2019s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name be made to St. Ann\u2019s Academy, 41 Genesee St., Hornell, NY\u00a0 14843.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hornell, New York Jacob W. \u201cJake\u201d Flaitz \u2013 91 \u2013 of Hornell, died early Tuesday morning (February 7, 2023) at Elderwood at Hornell Nursing Facility, where he had resided for the past 10 months.
