{"id":7904,"date":"2025-11-21T11:37:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T16:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/?p=7904"},"modified":"2025-11-24T19:14:26","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T00:14:26","slug":"richard-h-rick-yates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/?p=7904","title":{"rendered":"Richard H. \u201cRick\u201d Yates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7907\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Richard-Yates-Photo-250x331.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Richard-Yates-Photo-250x331.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Richard-Yates-Photo-1024x1355.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Richard-Yates-Photo-200x265.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Richard-Yates-Photo-768x1016.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Richard-Yates-Photo-1161x1536.jpg 1161w, https:\/\/www.dagonfuneralhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Richard-Yates-Photo.jpg 1270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Hornell, NY\u00a0 \/\u00a0 Middlesex, NY<\/p>\n<p>Richard H. \u201cRick\u201d Yates \u2013 82 \u2013 formerly of Middlesex, NY, died Thursday evening (November 20, 2025) at Maple City Rehab &amp; Nursing Facility (Hornell Gardens) where he had resided for the past 8 months.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Rochester, NY on October 1, 1943, he was the first son of John &amp; June (Shorthouse) Yates.<\/p>\n<p>Rick, affectionately known as \u201cThe Count,\u201d\u00a0 grew up in the Rochester area and was a graduate of Gates-Chili High School (class of 1962).\u00a0 He later received his Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Chemistry from Hobart College in Geneva, NY.<\/p>\n<p>He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country in the mid 1960s.\u00a0 Rick briefly resided in Virginia and in the early 1970s returned to the Rochester area.\u00a0 He moved to Canandaigua, NY in the 1980s and resided in Middlesex, NY from 1990 until moving to Hornell in March, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>He had been employed as an Information Technologist (IT) for the Ontario County Department of Social Services in Hopewell, retiring about 18 years ago.\u00a0 Rick was very \u201ctechnology minded\u201d and a self-proclaimed \u201cloner\u201d who lived a solitary life.\u00a0 He was an avid reader particularly interested in science, technology and astronomy&#8212; always striving to \u201cwork his mind.\u201d Rick also had a passion for music.<\/p>\n<p>Rick was a \u201chistory &amp; military buff\u201d who enjoyed studying battle ships and attending military air shows with his lifelong friend, Tom Melanson.\u00a0 He was also passionate about politics and public affairs and was not afraid to share his views on nearly any subject.\u00a0 Rick shared his mother\u2019s artistic touch and was a talented artist and was known for painting military ships.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his brother, Timothy Yates.<\/p>\n<p>Surviving are two brothers, Steven Yates and Christopher Yates both of Greece, NY; along with his sister in law, Pat Yates and several nieces &amp; nephews.<\/p>\n<p>At Rick\u2019s request there will be no calling hours.\u00a0 Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.\u00a0 A \u201cCelebration of Life\u201d will be held at a future date.<\/p>\n<p>Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.<\/p>\n<p>Rick\u2019s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of his name be made to the Veteran\u2019s Administration.<\/p>\n<p>To leave an online condolence or share a memory, visit www.dagonfuneralhome.com.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hornell, NY\u00a0 \/\u00a0 Middlesex, NY Richard H. \u201cRick\u201d Yates \u2013 82 \u2013 formerly of Middlesex, NY, died Thursday evening (November 20, 2025) at Maple City Rehab &amp; Nursing Facility (Hornell Gardens) where he had resided for the past 8 months.
