Gloria H. Remington – 87 – of 8325 Londonshire Drive, Charlotte, NC, formerly of Hornell, died early Thursday morning (May 26, 2011) at her home, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on March 4, 1924, she was the daughter of Stephen & Martha (Gallese) Argentieri.

Gloria was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and Hornell High School (class of 1946).  For several years she was employed as manager of the Men’s Department of the former Tuttle & Rockwell Department Store.  While living in Hornell she was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.

She was married on June 3, 1950 to William (Bill) Remington.  Throughout the years, Gloria and Bill resided in several locations, including Hornell, Panama City, FL, Milwaukee, WI, Taylors, SC and currently Charlotte, NC.

Following Bill’s retirement, they worked together as crowd control, ushers and ticket takers for Show Pro’s in Greenville, SC.  With their “Fun Money” they were able to travel extensively throughout Europe.  They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in their favorite place, Rome, Italy.

A celebration of the lives of John “Jack” & Edna (Bash) Kohnke will be held this Memorial Day Weekend at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.

Jack & Edna’s family will receive friends on Sunday from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home where a Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.  Their ashes will be interred in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Edna (Bash) Kohnke was born July 25, 1923 in Marion OH and died January 27th, 2007 in Leesburg, FL.  She grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1941).

John “Jack” Kohnke was born in Pittston, PA on December 3, 1923 and died November 10, 2010 in Leesburg, FL.  He was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1941) and was a member of the HHS Basketball Championship team. 

Jack & Edna were married on February 15, 1947.  Throughout the years they resided in many locations including Walton, NY, Liverpool, NY, Minnetonka, MN, Snellville, GA and had lived in Leesburg, FL since 2002.

They were preceded in death by their daughter, Martha Kendall.  They are survived by their children, Bob, Patricia, John, Mary Ann, Jim, Kris & Karen.

In addition to calling hours and the memorial service, friends are also invited to join the family for a luncheon on Sunday from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM at the Hornell Elks Lodge on the Broadway Mall.

In appreciatin to Jack’s service to his country as a member of the US Navy during WWII, the American Flag will be flown at Half Staff at the Dagon Funeral Home.

Rosemary L. Hamilton – 81 – of 71 Crescent St., Hornell, died Monday evening (May 23, 2011) at her home, following a long illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, she was born June 18, 1929, and was the daughter of Albert & Catherine (Ward) Kuhn.

Rosemary was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1947).  While in high school, she worked at a local movie theater.  Following graduation, she was employed as a telephone operator for New York Telephone for several years.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a member of St. Ann’s Church.  Rosemary had also been a member of the Hornell Moose Lodge and the Hornell Association.

Julie A. Byron – 58 – of 40 Main St., Arkport, died unexpectedly Thursday morning (May 19, 2011) at St. James Hospital, following a brief illness.

Affectionately known as “Jewels” and/or “Meme”, she was born in North Hornell on November 29, 1952, and was the daughter of Janice Ludwig and the late Neil Ludwig. 

Julie grew up in Arkport and was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class of 1971).    Following high school, she worked for a time as a waitress at the SunSet Inn in Hornell.  For the past 28 years Julie had been employed as a food preparer and server for ACES DINING HALL on the Alfred State College Campus.  

She was a member of the Arkport Presbyterian Church and was a die-hard New York Yankee fan.  Her greatest joy in life was simply her family.  Julie was a loving mother, devoted daughter, caring sister and fantastic grandmother who never missed a chance to attend her granddaughter’s soccer & softball games.  Simply put — her family was her life! 

Veronica Dorothy “Dot” Flaitz – 85 – a resident at McAuley Manor Nursing Home in Hornell, died Thursday, May 19, 2011.  Until a debilitating stroke in 2007, she had resided with her husband on the Big Creek Road in Hornell.      

Born in Rockledge, FL on April 6, 1926, she was the daughter of Frank and Ruth (Swort) Teater.

Dot grew up in Whitesville, NY and was a 1945 graduate of Whitesville Central School.  She had resided in Hornell since 1947.  She was employed for about 25 years as a seamstress at the former Marion Rohr Corporation.  She enjoyed sewing, ceramics, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Her family was always her main focus and emphasis.  Following retirement, she and her husband spent about 10 winters in Hernando, Florida.

James E. “Jim” Quant – 58 – formerly of Hornell, died early Thursday morning (May 12, 2011) at the Sweden Valley Manor in Coudersport, PA, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on September 27, 1952, he was the son of Frank & Verna (Windsor) Quant.

Jim Grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1972).  Following graduation from high school, he served in the US Navy.

He had been employed for a time at the City of Hornell Department of Public Works.  Throughout the years, Jim resided in many locations, including Hornell, Philadelphia, PA, Wellsville and Andover.  For most of his life he worked as a truck driver for several trucking companies.  He was an avid hunter & fisherman.

Angela Y. Johnson – 43 – of 31 Franklin St., Hornell, died Sunday afternoon (May 8, 2011) at her home, following a long illness.

Born in Winter Park, FL on July 10, 1967, she was the daughter of Clarence Johnson and the former Joyce Sumptner.

Angela grew up in Rochester and was a graduate of Franklin High School (class of 1984).  She later received her Certified Nurse’s Assistant (CNA) Degree. 

She has resided in Hornell for the past 14 years and had been employed at McAuley Manor and Hornell Gardens as a CNA.  She was and avid reader and also enjoyed being a “mom” to nearly all of her children’s friends.

Angela was preceded in death by her brother, Terry Johnson.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Terri Johnson of Bath and Shonnell Reed of Hornell; 1 son, J’Quann Reed of Hornell; her mother, Joyce Balkum of Rochester; 1 sister, Tammi Johnson of Rochester; 3 grandchildren, Danielle Johnson, Matthew Johnson and Isis Reffitt; 2 nieces, Infiniti Johnson and A’mere Greggs; a great-nephew, Sclim.
 
The family of Angela Y. Johnson will receive friends on Friday from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where a Memorial Service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 11:00 AM with Bishop James Hartsfield officiating.

Anthony  C. “Tony”  Marino – 77 – of 98 River St., Hornell, died Friday morning, (May 6, 2011) at his home, following a long illness, surrounded by his loving family.  He died the day before his 78th birthday.

Born in Hornell on May 7, 1933, he was the son of Carl & Rose (Gallese) Marino.

Tony grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1951).  He was a 2 year veteran of the US Army, serving his country during the Korean Conflict.

Following his discharge from the US Army, Tony resided in the Buffalo area where he was employed at a Sunoco Service Station.  He later owned & operated a Mobile Gas Station in Cheektowaga. 

Tony returned to Hornell in 1984 and purchased the former Jack’s Place.  He changed the name to Tony’s Place and operated the tavern for the next 20 years.  The tavern in now called Vinny’s Place.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  Tony had been a member of the Hornell Association, Hornell American Legion, Carducci Lodge (Sons of Italy) and the Hornell Knights of Columbus.  He enjoyed watching sporting events on television and especially enjoyed rooting for the Buffalo Bills, New York Yankees and Buffalo Sabers. 

Tony was preceded in death by his brother, Charles “Chuck” Marino.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Jovenia “Dena” Corcoran of Hornell and Jennifer (Dr. Daniel) Orlando of Crystal Beach, FL; 4 sisters, Joanne (Robert) Nilsen of Arkport, Cheryl Raschiatore of Rochester, Nicoletta Barrie of Rochester and Marylyn Marino of Rochester; 5 grandchildren, Gregory (Deanna) Addison, Carli Corcoran, Kasey Corcoran, Heather Corcoran and Nicholas Orlando; 3 great-grandchildren, Tara, Jaime & Anthony; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces & nephews.

The family of Anthony C. “Tony” Marino will receive friends on Monday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery. 

Tony’s family request that memorial contributions in his name be made to either Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 East Corning Rd., Corning, NY 14830 or to the Hornell Humane Society, PO Box 533, Hornell, NY 14843.  Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.

In recognition of Tony’s service to his country during the Korean Conflict, the American Flag will be flown at Half Staff at the Dagon Funeral Home.

Bobby Lee Cansdale, Sr. – 54 – formerly of Hornell died Friday afternoon (April 22, 2011) at Absolut at Houghton Nursing Facility in Houghton, NY following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Hornell on October 8, 1956, he was the son of Robert Cansdale and Betty (Zahner) Cansdale.

Bobby grew up in Hornell and attended Hornell High School and Hornell BOCEES.  He was an avid hunter and loved the outdoors.  Most of all, he loved to draw and was a gifted artist when it came to detail.

 He had been married to the former Peggie Fiew.

Surviving are 6 children, Jeremy of Hornell, Ashley of Belfast, Joshua of Georgia, Bobby, Jr. of Bath, Chelsie of Branchport and Brandon of Olean; his mother, Betty Zahner of Hornell; 3 brothers, Cris of Naples, Reggie of Hornell and Kevin of Schenectady; many nieces, nephews & cousins. 

The family of Bobby Lee Cansdale, Sr. will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday with Rev. David Kilgore officiating.  Burial will be in Rose Ridge Cemetery, Naples, NY

John E. Dye – 22 – formerly of Sharps Hill Road, Hornell, died unexpectedly Monday morning (May 2, 2011) as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in Morrisville, NC.

Born in Hornell on May 28, 1988, he was the son of Gary & Ann (Hale) Dye. 

John grew up in Arkport and was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class of 2006).  He enjoyed playing sports, especially basketball and had been a member of the Arkport Central School Blue Jay Basketball Team. 

In 2010, John graduated Cum Laude from the University of Pittsburg at Bradford, PA where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.  While in college, he was a member of the Phi Kappa Epsilon Fraternity where he served as Vice President and Sergeant at Arms.

Following his graduation from college, John moved to North Carolina where he was employed as a supervisor for Allied Security in the Durham / Chapel Hill areas.  Most recently he worked at Air Velocity Heating & Air Conditioning LLC in Morrisville as a technician.
