Richard J. “Dick” Schieder – (90) – of 79 Genesee St., Hornell, died Sunday morning (May 8, 2016) at his home following a long illness.

A native & live resident of Hornell, he was born September 3, 1925, and was the son of George & Agnes (Lang) Schieder.

Dick was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1943). He had been employed as an accountant at the Erie Accounting Bureau for over 20 years, retiring in 1968.

At the tender age of 40, Dick decided to continue his education, enrolling at Alfred University, majoring in Art. Following graduation, he continued his post-graduate work at Alfred, earning his teaching degree.

Dick was employed as administrator for the Hornell Area Arts Council for 2 years and also served as a substitute school teacher for several years.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. He was a former member of the Carducci Lodge (Sons of Italy), Hornell Lions Club, Hornell Association, Knights of Columbus and Hornell Moose Lodge. Dick possessed a genuine love of music and was the author of many songs. He was an avid glass collector, gardener and enjoyed painting.

Dick was married in 1972 to the former Josephine Trentanelli who died February 16, 2005. He was also preceded in death by 7 brothers & sisters.

Surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins & in-laws.

At Dick’s request, there will be no calling hours. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church. Burial will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery.

Thomas R. “Tom”  LaClair – 68 – a resident of Elderwood at Hornell (formerly McAuley Manor) died Monday morning (April 25, 2016) following a long illness.

Born in Rochester, NY, on April 1, 1948, he was the son of Gerald & Doris (Campbell) LaClair.

Tom lived in Fairport in his younger years and throughout the years resided in several locations, including Athens, PA, Bennington, NY, Attica, NY and Hornell.

He was a deeply religious person and had been a member of the Methodist Church.  He will be missed by his many friends at Elderwood at Hornell.

Surviving are 3 brothers, Gerald LaClair of Rochester, Donald LaClair of Newport Richie, FL and James LaClair of Palmyra, NY; 2 nephews, John LaClair and Jesse LaClair.

At Tom’s request there will be no calling hours.  Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Cheryl Ambrose Green – 67 – of Hornell, died Sunday afternoon (April 24, 2016) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a long illness.

Born in Sewickley, PA on July 27, 1948, she was the daughter of Richard & Mary (Goode) Ambrose.

Cheryl grew up in Aliquippa, PA and was a graduate of Hopewell High School (class of 1966). Following high school, she graduated from Beaver County Community College in Freedom PA and later received her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Piedmont Bible College in Winston-Salem, NC.

Serving as a volunteer in the V.I.S.T.A. program (the domestic version of the Peace Corp), Cheryl was assigned to Hornell in 1970. She had been employed briefly at Crowley Dairy in Arkport and also at the Hornell March of Dimes or Hornell. Cheryl began working at the Hornell Housing Authority in July 1980 as a temporary employee and became a permanent employee in November of 1981. She retired from her position as Tenant Relations Assistant in July 2013.

Cheryl was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church where she served in many capacities, including Deacon and office volunteer. She was an avid reader, enjoyed cooking and loved rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Team.

She will be remembered as a woman who loved helping anyone in need, whether it be family or friend. CHERYL WAS THE ROCK ON WHICH HER FAMILY STOOD!

Cheryl was married on March 30, 1985 to Fredrick Green who died November 23, 2001.

Surviving are her sister, Alice (Michael) Nestor of Aliquippa, PA; her brother, Richard (LeAnn) Ambrose of Evans City, PA; her in-laws, Timothy & Mary Green of Wesley, MA and Katherine Green of Hornell; several nieces, including Mary Nestor of Aliquippa, PA; and will be sadly missed by her dear friends, Paul Virgo, Eileen Hamelin, Gary & Kathy Foster, all of Hornell along with her “four legged boy, Cooper.”

Henry Schlossberg – 92 – of Arkport, formerly of North Hornell, died, early Sunday morning (April 10, 2016) at St. James Mercy Hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Brooklyn on June 30, 1923, he was the son of Abe and Ida (Gassner) Schlossberg.

Henry grew up in Brooklyn, a graduate of Tilden High School, where he met Libby Ginsburg in what she described as a “Harry met Sally” moment. He was a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, selling hot dogs at Ebbets Field from a young age.

He and Libby, along with two children, moved to Hornell in 1953, where he established and managed Marion Rohr Manufacturing Corp for 40 years. He then worked as the payroll manager for Covered Wagon Tours until his death.

An accomplished pilot from age 23, he later became a flight instructor and was awarded by the FAA and the AOPA for his lifetime perfect safety record. With then Hornell doctor B.J. McClanahan, in the late 60s, he co-founded the American Bonanza Society—today the world’s largest private flying organization.

Henry was a boating instructor with the Power Squadron and was also fond of ballroom dancing, skiing, boating, horseback riding, and SCUBA; coaching and encouraging his children, grandchildren and many of their friends in these and other sports.

A member of Hornell’s Temple Beth-El, he supported many charitable organizations around the area, including volunteering for the Civil Air Patrol and giving rides in support of “Airport Days” in Hornell and Dansville. He was instrumental in persuading 1970’s Governor Nelson Rockefeller to visit and spend funds improving Hornell’s airport.

Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Libby, who was always a willing partner in his flying adventures. A longtime lover of big band music and jazz, their marriage in December, 1944 in Brooklyn, was attended by renowned Cantor/Singer Richard Tucker and the Andrews Sisters.

Henry is survived by daughters, Sandra Messing, formerly of Rochester, NY, Maddy (Richard) Lawler, of East Hampton, NY, and son William (Robin) Schlossberg of Stamford, CT; four grandchildren, Risa (Ryan) Milne, Adam (Anna) Lawler, Lisa Lawler, and Daniel Schlossberg; and three great-grandchildren, Amelia Milne, Max Milne, and Reagan Lawler.

In addition to his wife, Libby, Henry is also pre-deceased by three sisters, Lillian Pearl, Renee Mish, and Ruth Oshins from the New York City area; and by several nieces and nephews with whom he was very close.

The family of Henry Schlossberg will receive friends on Tuesday (April 12th, 2016) from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church Street, Hornell. Henry will be interred at a private ceremony alongside Libby, at Beth-El Cemetery.

Joanne M. Daniels – (85) – of 345 Cleveland Ave., North Hornell, died Friday evening (April 1, 2016) at McAuley Manor where she had resided for the past seven months.

Born in Olean on September 16, 1930, she was the daughter of Bernard & Mary Agnes (Casey) Gibbs.

Joanne resided in Bolivar and Wellsville before moving to Hornell. She was a graduate of Wellsville High School, St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Elmira, Nazareth College of Rochester and St. Louis University in St. Louis, MO where she received a Masters Degree in Nursing Education.

She did private duty nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital and Strong Memorial Hospital, both in Rochester, and worked as Educational Director at St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing and Assistant Administrator at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elmira. Joanne also served as staff nurse and Assistant Director of Nursing at Jones Memorial hospital in Wellsville. In 1966, she began teaching nursing at SUNY College of Technology at Alfred. In 1979, she was selected for inclusion in two reference journals, “The World Who’s Who of Women in Education” and “Notable Americans.” They each contained biographical information on achievements of prominent educators. Along with her co-author, Loretta Smith, she wrote a math text for nurses, “Clinical Calculation, A Unified Approach.” She retired in 1991.

Joanne was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. She served on the
St. Ann’s Parish Council; served on the Thanksgiving Appeal Committee; sang in the choir; assisted with sacristan duties; and volunteered her time with the basic upkeep and maintenance of the church. She loved golfing and was a member of Twin Hickory golf Club.

She enjoyed volunteer work, especially delivering Meals-On-Wheels, traveling with her husband to Florida where she spent her winters with her family who lived there.

Joanne was married at Immaculate Conception church in Wellsville on April 16, 1966 to Angelo A. Daniels who died February 4, 2012. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Robert Gibbs and Bernard Gibbs; her sister, Patricia Gibbs Graves.

Surviving are her sister, Constance (William) Garvey of Orlando, FL; her nieces, Cynthia (Michael) Nicoloff, Diana (Michael) Jackson, Sheila (Mark) Brandes, all of Florida, LiLynn Graves, Kurt Graves, Jeffrey (Angie) Graves, Bernard Graves, Dennis (Debbie) Gibbs, Gail Quinn; several cousins and other nieces & nephews.

George E. Wellington – 76 – of 42 Fulton St., Hornell, died early Friday morning (April 1, 2016) at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville, NY, following a brief illness.

Born in Hornell on July 5, 1939, he was the son of Frank & Geraldine (Partridge) Wellington.

George grew up in Arkport and was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class of 1957). From 1960-1969 he was employed as a mechanic at the former Russ Davis Ford Garage in Hornell. In 1969 he began working as a mechanic at the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), retiring in 2001. Throughout the years, George continued his education by taking classes at the Wellsville Campus of Alfred State College. For many years, he served as a part time bartender at the former Big Elms Restaurant.

He was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Hornell Elks Lodge and also a member of the Hornell Sportsman’s Club. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting — especially deer hunting. One of his fondest memories was taking a trip to Montana where he went Big Game Hunting.

George enjoyed watching sporting events especially NFL Football. He also loved rooting for his beloved Hornell Red Raiders. Another fond memory was working as a mechanic for two weeks at the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid.

He was married on October 13, 1962 to the former Carol Fawcett who died September 10, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Francis Wellington who was killed in action during WWII; 2 sisters, Lois Lisi and Ruthie Stewart.

Surviving are his daughter, Kim (Will) Schmitt of Hornell; 1 brother, Leon Wellington of Arkport; 3 grandsons, Andrew (Sally) Schmitt of Arkport, Brian (Kate) Schmitt of Canisteo and Kyle (Christy Dodd) Schmitt of Hornell; 1 great-granddaughter, Cora Schmitt; his “cousin”, Margie (Mark Van Durme) Terry along with Ryan & Sean Terry; several nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Francis L.”Fran” Odell – 81 – formerly of Arkport, died Sunday evening (March 20, 2016) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on October 29, 1934, he was the son of Everett & Eileen (O’Laughlin) Odell.

Fran grew up in Arkport and was a graduate of Arkport Central School. He was a veteran of the US Navy, serving his country for four years during the Korean Conflict.

Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Fran returned to Arkport and was employed at the former Erie Lackawanna Railroad for several years. He moved to Kansas City, MO to attend trade school where he became a licensed electrician.

Fran resided for a time in Plattsburg, NY and later moved to the Rochester, NY area. He was employed for over 30 years at Bausch & Lomb in Rochester, retiring about 16 years ago as an Electronic Technician. Following his retirement, he moved back to the Arkport where he lived for about 9 years, returning to Rochester in 2009.

He was a member of the Arkport American Legion and throughout his lifetime enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also loved to travel and “search for treasure” by walking the beaches & parks with his metal detector. His greatest joy was simply being with his family!

Fran was married on April 5, 1958 to the former Marie Rechichi who died in 2009.

Surviving are his daughter, Stacey (Todd) Greanier of Rochester; 3 sisters, Connie Leyman of South Carolina, Doris Stewart of Hornell and Norma Michaels of Canandaigua; 2 grandsons, Maximilian Greanier and Tiberius Greanier; many nieces & nephews.

Mark J. Loree – (88) – of 25 Twin Dr., Dansville, formerly of North Almond Valley died Wednesday afternoon (March 16, 2016) at the Livingston County Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation in Mt. Morris, NY, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on January 30, 1928, he was the son of Mark B. & Anna (Joyce) Loree.

Mark grew up in North Almond Valley and attended Arkport Central School.  In 1942 at the age of 14 he took over the family farm when his father died.  Mark married Emma Emo on May 12, 1951.  Together they established the Loree Homestead where they had 6 children and raised dairy and beef cattle.  In 2004 they retired from farming and moved to Dansville.  Along with farming, Mark was also employed at the Crowley Dairy, formerly Grandview Dairy from 1965 to 1990.  Mark’s greatest joys were his family and his life on the farm.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  He enjoyed singing in the St. Ann’s Choir, the St. Ann’s Resurrection Choir and the annual Christmas Cantata.

Mark enjoyed playing sports and watching sports, especially softball, baseball & basketball.  He especially loved playing with and watching his kids and grandkids in their athletic endeavors.  Mark had a deep love & appreciation of music and he enjoyed square dancing with his beloved Emma.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna & Mark B. Loree and his brother, Paul Loree.

Mark is survived by his wife of 64 years, Emma Emo Loree.  Also surviving are 4 daughters, Linda (Edith Findeis) Loree of Clifton Springs, Patricia (Thomas) McDonald of Wayland, Erma (George) Kobosko of Melbourne, FL and Mary Loree of Bellefontaine, OH; 2 sons, Mark (Gina-Marie) Loree of Wellington, FL and Donald (Michelle) Loree of Surprise, AZ;  sister, Mary Patti of Arkport;  brother, Thomas (Hazel) Loree of Dansville; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren, 14 step-great-grandchildren and 6 step great-great grandchildren; nieces,  nephews, cousins and many friends.

Gladys M. Lorow – (90) – formerly of 2280 Big Creek Road, Hornell, died Saturday afternoon (March12, 2016) at Steuben County Health Center in Bath, NY, where she had resided since 2002.

A native & life resident of Hornell, she was born December 24, 1925, and was the daughter of Herbert & Deniza (Cobb) Dennis.

Gladys was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1944). She was employed for many years as a sales clerk for several area businesses, including Loblaws Grocery, Richtmyers Grocery, Cy’s Grocery, Fay’s Drug Store and Eckards Drug Store.

She was a member of the Buena Vista Wesleyan Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling, and especially enjoyed taking bus tours and visiting various parts of the country.

Gladys was married on June 23, 1944 to Harry Lorow who died December 25, 1978. She was also preceded in death by her son, Harry Lorow, JR who died in 2012; her son-in-law, Richard Bergh who died in 2006; 3 infant sisters, Leona & Cleo Dennis (twins) and Ada Dennis; 5 adult sisters, Clarabelle Margeson, Florence Guthrie, Rose Rathbun, Betty Lorow and Laura McGinnis; 1 brother, Victor Dennis.

Surviving are son, David Lorow of Hornell; 2 daughters, Mary Bergh of Canisteo and JoAnn (Michael) Knopka of Ilion, NY; her daughter-in-law, Patricia Lorow of Bath, NY;10 grandchildren, Deborah Murray, Thomas Lorow, Susan Lorow, Hanns Birch, Stephen Birch, Carrie Bass, Michael Knopka, Jay Knopka, James Lorow and Kristi Lorow; 17 great-grandchildren, Nathan Birch, Trent Birch, Timber Birch, Stephanie Ward, Joey Bass, Riley Knopka, Stella Knopka, Shaylyn Knopka, Alyssa Knopka, Lucas Knopka, Nick Recktenwald, Sam Recktenwald, Lucas Murray, Matt Lorow, Brian Lorow, Quinn Lorow and Mason Lorow; 2 great-great grandchildren, Thomas Lorow and Michael Lorow; nieces & nephews including her special niece, Nancy Harding.

Sue Ann Fenti – 69 – of 6392 County Route 68 (Crosby Creek Road), Hornell died unexpectedly Monday morning (March 7, 2016) at her home.

Born in Hornell on September 12, 1946, she was the daughter of William “Duke” & Lois (Cline) Furlong.

Sue grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Canisteo Central School (class of 1964). She was employed for a time at the former Richmyer’s Grocery and also as a secretary at the former Hollands Lumber in Hornell.

She had been a member of the Faithful Followers of Christ Bible Church in Howard. Sue enjoyed sewing and making quilts and also liked working with ceramics. She liked to watch TV and especially enjoyed watching her favorite soap operas.

Sue was married in 1966 to Frank J. Fenti who died in 2003. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Steve Furlong.

Surviving are 2 sons, Frank (Nancy) Fenti of Livonia and Christopher (Sherry) Fenti of Hornell; 2 brothers, William Furlong of Louisville, KY and David Furlong of Atlanta, GA; 4 grandchildren, Deborah (Shawn) Hertzog, Hallie Fenti, Maria Fenti and Sydney White; several nieces & nephews.
