Kenneth R. “Ken” Diehl – (83) – formerly of 449 Canisteo St., Hornell, died early Tuesday morning (September 11, 2012) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, following a brief illness.

Born in Buffalo on December 29, 1928, he was the son of Robert J. & Theresa (Jaremboski) Diehl. 

Ken attended Seneca Vocational High School in Buffalo and was a graduate cum laude of Franklin School of Science & Arts in Philadelphia, PA where he was president of his class. 

He was employed as senior technician at the former New York State T.B. Hospital Laboratory in Mt. Morris for several years.  In 1958 he moved to Hornell and began his employment by the former Steuben County Medical Laboratory at the former Bethesda Community Hospital where he served as laboratory supervisor.  In 1968, he accepted a position in the laboratory at St. James Mercy Hospital from which he retired as chemistry department supervisor in 1990.

Nancy A. Whiteman – 75 – of 12 Ransom St., Hornell, died early Sunday morning (September 2, 2012) at Rochester General Hospital, where she had been a patient for the past 5 days.

Born in Erie, PA on February 25, 1937, she was the daughter of Gerald & Elizabeth (Ranwand) Kepner.

Nancy grew up in the Canaseraga area and attended Canaseraga Central School.  She has resided in Hornell for most of her adult life.

She had been employed as a production line worker for several years at the former Corbin Wood Products in Hornell and had also worked at the former Ontario Industries of Hornell and Birdseye Corporation in Avon, NY.  She later was employed as a cook at the Sunset Restaurant.

Nicholas B. “Nick” Gangemi – 90 – of 73 Pine St., Hornell, died Thursday evening (August 23, 2012) at Hornell Gardens.

Born in Galeton, PA on July 17, 1922, he was the son of James & Josephine (Federico) Gangemi.

Nick was a lifelong resident of Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1941).  He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Air Force. 

Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Nick was employed as a diesel mechanic at the former Erie Railroad.  He later began working at the Mobil Service Station on Main St., Hornell and in 1960 purchased the business and re-naming it Nick’s Mobil.  He owned & operated Nick’s Mobil on Main Street for many years and eventually moved the business to Seneca Street and where he continued to serve his many customers for many more years.  Following his retirement he served as a volunteer in the Radiology Department at St. James Mercy Hospital.

Walter J. Cook, Jr – 84 – of 314 Chemung St., Waverly died early Sunday morning at Hornell Gardens where he had resided since January, 2012.

He was born in Rock Royal, NY on August 19, 1928 and was the son of Walter & Edna (Kipp) Cook.

He had been as a postal worker in Deposit, NY for many years.

There will be no calling hours or services.  Arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.

Sharon E. Ferland – 66 – of 19 Bostwick Pl., Hornell, died unexpectedly Saturday morning (August 25, 2012) at her home.

Born in Wellsville on November 23, 1945, she was the daughter of Calvin & Mary (Hough) Robbins.

Sharon resided in Angelica in her younger years and has lived in Hornell since her teenage years.  She had been employed at the former Marion Rohr Corporation in several capacities, including seamstress, tagging & folding.

On October 3, 1971 she married David R. Ferland who survives.  Also surviving is her daughter, Edith M. Ferland of Hornell.

At Sharon’s request there will be no calling hours.  Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.  Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.

Janice A. Burdick – 72 – of 191 Juneway, Advance, NC died early Wednesday morning (August 22, 2012) at her home.

Born in Spring Mills, NY on November 5, 1939, she was the daughter of Russell & Genevieve (Bacon) Nye.

Janice grew up in the Whitesville area and attended Whitesville Central School and later Alfred-Almond Central School.  Throughout the years she resided in several locations, including Whitesville, Clarksville, Friendship, Massachusetts, the Alfred-Scio Area and Almond.  She had been employed in the custodial department of Alfred University.

Duncan P. “Dunc” Hinckley, 81, of Chester, VA, formerly of Piffard, NY died Sunday, July 29, 2012 at the Hospice Center of  Charleston in Mount Pleasant, SC following a brief illness.

Dunc was born in Batavia, NY on December 25, 1930 and was the son of Percy & Sarah (Gardner) Hinckley.

He grew up in Alexander, NY and was a graduate of Alexander Central School (class of 1948).  In 1953 he graduated from SUNY Brockport where he received his BS Degree in Education.  He later received his Masters Degree in Education from SUNY Buffalo. 

Lillian R. Roselli – 72 – of Rochester, formerly of Hornell died Sunday (July 8, 2012) at Rochester General Hospital.

Born in Hornell on August 7, 1939, she was the daughter of Dominic & Mary (Constantino) Espisito.

Lillian grew up in Canisteo and was a graduate of Canisteo High School (class of 1957).  She later attended St. James School of Nursing. 

While living in Hornell she had been a member of St. Ann’s Parish.  She was employed for a few years in the late 1970’s as “head cook” at Camp Rathbun.   In the mid 1980’s she worked at the Head Start Program. 

J. David “Scrod” Broderick – 58 – of 6989 Lain Road, Hornell, died unexpectedly early Monday morning (July 2, 2012) at his home, while working in his garden.

Born in Hornell on February 10, 1954, he was the son of James & Dolores (Rouscher) Broderick.

Dave, affectionately known as “Scrod”, grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1972). 

For nearly 40 years he was employed in the Sales Department of the Hornell Evening Tribune, most recently as a Multi Media Sales Executive.  For about four years in the early 1990’s he worked both sales and service for Paul DeLima Coffee. 

Scrod was a true outdoorsman who loved everything about Mother Nature.  He also was an avid hunter (both rifle & archery) and a passionate gardener.  He was an honorary member of the Straight Arrow Hunting Camp.  His happiest times were spent enjoying the outdoors and he especially cherished all activities with his family.  Dave love watching football and golf on television and was an avid Buffalo Bills and Tiger Woods fan.  For many years he was a member of the Hornell Knights of Columbus.

Donald Dominic “Don” Piano – (81) – with residences in both Hornell and Rochester, New York, died peacefully Saturday morning (June 23, 2012) at Rochester General Hospital following a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born on Central Park in Rochester on November 11, 1930, he was the son of (Giuseppe/Joseph) and Frances (D’Angelo) Piampiano (name later changed to Piano).

As a child, Don lived in Rochester and Buffalo.  His family moved to Hornell when he was about 10 years old.  One of his fondest early memories was attending the 1939 New York World’s Fair.  He was a member of the Hornell High School Class of 1950. 

From 1951 – 1953, Don served his country as a member of the US Army Security Courier Corps, stationed at Rhein-Main Air Base in West Germany.  After returning home, Don enrolled at Alfred State College, where he earned his Associate’s Degree in Applied Sciences / Sales and Distribution.
