Jeanne E. Stearns – (89) – of 3 Henry St., Arkport, died Thursday morning (July 4, 2019) at Elderwood at Hornell Nursing Facility, following a long illness.

Born in North Hornell on November 28, 1929, she was the daughter of Edward & Alta (Snyder) Jeffery.

Jeanne grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1948).  She later graduated from Columbia School of Nursing in New York City where she earned her Registered Nurses License.  In the upcoming years, she continued taking classes in keeping with her license.

From 1958 – 1989, Jeanne served as School Nurse at Arkport Central School.  For about 8 years, she was employed as a registered nurse at St. James Mercy Hospital, retiring in 1996.

Jeanne was a member of the Arkport Presbyterian Church and also the Hornell Alumni Association.  She had a deep affection for animals and throughout the years owned many dogs & cats.  She was a longtime supporter of the Hornell Humane Society and also the SPCA.

Always ready to help others, Jeanne “took-in” countless children and young adults into her home, giving them a place to stay because they were having troubles at home.  She will be remembered as a loving & caring woman who was an asset to the entire community.

Jeanne was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Pat Tiemersma and Alyce Brown.

Surviving are 3 sons, William (Linda) Stearns of Arkport, Martin (Bea) Stearns of Menifee, CA and Mitchell (Gina) Stearns of Hildebran, NC; 1 daughter, Denise (Sam) Spear of Lockport, NY; 1 sister, Kathleen Wilson of Frederick, MD; 15 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

Warren L. LaFlamme – 48 – of 5914 County Route 64, Hornell, died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon (June 22, 2019) at his home.

Born in Mt. Vernon, IL on June 28, 1970, he was the son of Warren & Nadine (Dubois) Laflamme.

Warren grew up in Mt. Vernon, IL where he graduated from high school.  He later received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Southern Illinois University (SIU).

Throughout the years, he resided in many locations and has lived in the Hornell area for the past three years.

Warren was a spiritual man who had a deep love of music and enjoyed playing guitar and also enjoyed playing video games.

Surviving are his son, Forest (Kelsey Henrick) Spiegel of Beaverton, OR; his parents, Warren & Nadine Laflamme of Mt. Vernon, IL; along with 2 sisters.

William M. “Bill” Leahy – 57 – of 3997 Fenton Ave., Greenwood, formerly of Canisteo, died Wednesday afternoon (June 19, 2019) at his home, following a long illness.

Born in Forest Hills, NY on August 12, 1961, he was the son of Bernard & Helaine (Perlman) Leahy.

Bill grew up in Stamford, CT and had resided in many locations throughout the State of Connecticut. After graduating from high school, Bill took classes at Corning Community College and also took classes at the  York State Fire Academy in Bath, NY, becoming a firefighter and EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) .  He was a veteran of the US Army, serving his country from 1985 – 1989.

For several years, Bill worked for Coleman Brothers and also Reithoffers Carnival.  He not only served as a mechanic, setting up, tearing down and maintaining the rides, but also as ride operator and truck driver for both companies.  Throughout the years, Bill had been employed as a truck driver for several trucking companies, traveling throughout the country.  He also drove for Rensenberger Trucking, transporting railroad workers.

Having a deep love of music, Bill served as the sound production engineer for several bands in Connecticut and often would travel with the bands.  For the past 16 years, he owned & operated Spectrum Entertainment providing DJ Music & Karoke for weddings and private parties.  He also enjoyed the outdoors and loved deer hunting.

For many years, Bill served as a firefighter and EMT in Connecticut, East Corning, South Corning, Macedon, and Greenwood.  He had also been employed as a mechanic at Monroe Muffler in Riverside, NY.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Deborah Leahy.

Surviving are his son, Shane Davis of Greenwood and also Shane’s mother Tammy (Eric) Ford of Greenwood.

At Bill’s request there will be no calling hours.  Private services will be held at the convenience of the family with final interment in the Bath National Cemetery, Bath, NY.

Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department.

Charles E. “Charlie” Carmen – 76 – of 16 Ransom St., Hornell, formerly of Thacher St., Hornell, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning (June 11, 2019) at his home.

Born on April 27, 1943, he was the son of Donald & Rose (Baxter) Carmen.

Charlie resided in Cobleskill, NY for many years and has lived in the Hornell area for the past 25 years.  He had been employed as a truck driver for most of his adult life and had been employed as a delivery man for Bathrick’s Florist of Hornell.

He was a devoted member of the Church of Latter Day Saints in Arkport and was also an avid fisherman.

Charlie is survived by 2 sisters, Ella Smith and Rose Marie Carmen; his half-brother, Stewart Utter; his half-sister, Carol Acquaviva; along with many friends in the Hornell area.

Katherine A. Hoyt – 96 – of 24 Ransom St., Hornell, died early Monday morning (June 10, 2019) at St. James Mercy Hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Elmira on July 8, 1922, she was the daughter of Charles & Levenia (Artlip) Krakat.  She has resided in Hornell for most of her life.

Katherine was a 1942 graduate of Hornell High School.  She had been employed for about 25 years at the former Kieser Glove Factory and later worked for the Marion Rohr Corporation for an additional 25 years.  She was a Member of Christ Episcopal Church.

She was married in 1978 to Lloyd “Chet” Hoyt who died in 1999.

Katherine is survived by several nieces & nephews; her dear friends, Mary Lou Markham & Jack Generalli along with her loving caregivers.

Carl A. Mauro, 87, of 94 East Main Street, Hornell, died unexpectedly Tuesday evening (June 4, 2019) atSt. James Mercy Hospital.

Born in Hornell on May 6, 1932, he was the son of Dominic “Mickey” & Angela (Parrillo) Mauro.

Carl grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1950).  While in high school, he participated in all sports and was a member of the very successful 1950 Basketball Team.

Carl and Jean Paul were married on May 10, 1952. Jean passed on in 2014 after their 62 years of marriage. They have four children:  Steve, who is a mechanical engineer and served as an officer in the US Marine Corps; Carl, Jr. who has retired from the US Air Force; Mary, who has had a real estate business in Texas; and Lucy, who is a pianist and college professor.  Carl and Jean have nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He initially worked for five years for the Erie Railroad in the maintenance and switch yard departments. He also worked for Foster Wheeler Corporation in Dansville, NY for 25 years in their Dansville and Dallas, TX plants. During this period, Carl attended the State University at Alfred, Rochester Institute of Technology, and A.M.A. in New York City, for industrial engineering and management courses and certification. His positions at Foster Wheeler were in industrial engineering and plant management.

Carl moved his family to Dansville, NY, Dallas, TX and later to Williamsport, PA, where he worked for Pullman Power Corporation in engineering and plant management, producing major steel assemblies for nuclear power plants.  He also worked for Johnson Controls Corporation and Fuller Corporation and had return assignments to Foster Wheeler and Pullman Power.  Carl started his own consulting business and had a major assignment with Hoffman New Yorker Corporation of New Jersey where he designed a two-story manufacturing plant in Dushore, PA, and also helped with efficient product design and manufacturing.

During his stay in Dansville, NY, Carl was involved in village government, and he was very proud of being appointed village Water Commissioner by both the Republican and Democrat mayor.

Carl was both an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed golf.  After semi-retirement, he and his wife Jean returned to Hornell.  He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. Carl was dedicated to his entire family, a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and devoted to his faith. His greatest joy was in taking care of his family and home.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Salvatore “Tootie” Mauro; 2 sisters-in-law, Marguerite Mauro and Anne Mauro; his son-in-law, Harald Strauss.

Surviving are 2 sons, Steve Mauro of Williamsport, PA and Carl Mauro, Jr. of Whitefish, MT; 2 daughters, Mary Strauss of Rockwall, TX and Lucy Mauro of Morgantown, WV; 2 brothers, Joseph Mauro of Hornell and Francis “Buzz” Mauro of Hammondsport, NY; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; many nieces & nephews.

The family of Carl A. Mauro will receive friends on Monday from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:00 AM atSt. Ann’s Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Russell N. Storrs – 56 – formerly of 52 State St., Hornell, died unexpectedly Monday morning (June 3, 2019) in Hornell.

Born in Wayland, NY on November 14, 1962, he was the son of Harold & Loretta (Urbanik) Storrs.

Russell grew up in Conesus, NY and was a graduate of Livonia High School (class of 1982).

Throughout the years, Russell resided in many locations, including Hemlock, Springwater, Cohocton, Avoca & Prattsburgh.  He had been employed for about 4 years at Alliance Tool & Die in Honeoye Falls, NY and for about 5 years worked for ENI Corporation in Henrietta, NY, a company which makes components for computers.  He had also been employed at Philips Lighting in Bath and most recently worked in the maintenance department for Kemps Bus Company in Lakeville, NY.

Russell had a deep love and affection for music.  Music was in his blood from the time that he was old enough to play.  He was currently in a band with his brothers, Harold & Wayne called 3SB.  Russell was the bass player, lead singer and wrote & co-wrote their original music.  They all started playing many, many years ago with their father, Harold Storrs SR.  At the time of Russell’s death, the band was finalizing details of an up-coming show.  Without a doubt, music was one of the most important things in his life.

He also enjoyed “Rock Painting” and was a member of “Rockin Hornell” — a group of people that would paint rocks and place them around the community simply to brighten people’s day.  He also donated his painted rocks to the AMVETS in Hornell.

Russell had a deep love for his entire family.  His greatest joy, however, was simply being active in his children’s lives.  He loved them dearly!!

He was married on November 1, 1986 to the former Diane Shafer who survives.  Also surviving are his son, Rik (Amanda) Storrs of Hornell; his daughter, Emilee (Christopher) Canuti of Hornell; 2 sisters, Sue (Randy) Goater of Brockport, NY and Debbie Pierson of Livonia; 4 brothers, Harold (Katrina) Storrs JR of Cohocton, Wayne Storrs of Hornell, Scotty Anderz (Storrs) and Bill Storrs of Arkport; his step-grandson, Ryder Canuti; many nieces & nephews.

Felicia J. Rohalla – 95 – of  formerly of 79 Elizabeth St., Hornell, died Sunday morning (June 2, 2019) at Elderwood at Hornell Nursing Facility where she had resided for the past two years.

A native & life resident of Hornell, she was born April 19, 1924, and was the daughter of Giacomo & Jenny (Armetta) Grillo.

Felicia was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and attended Hornell High School.  She was employed for 26 years at the former Merrill Hosiery and for 10 years at the former Huguets Textile Corporation.  She also worked at several restaurants in Hornell, including the Sun Set Inn, the Ponce DeLeon and the Big Elms Restaurant.

Felicia was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  She was a member of the Ladies of Columbus for many years.  She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed playing the NYS Lottery.  In 1985, she was rewarded when she won $25,000.00 playing “Instant Lotto”.

She was married in 1968 to Walter Rohalla who died in 1969.  She was also preceded in death by2 brothers, John Grillo and Joseph Grillo; and two sisters, Rosemary Lombardy and Mary Diaello; 2 brothers-in-law, Tony Diaello & Donald Lombardy.

Surviving are 2 sisters-in-law, Jane Grillo of Hornell and Shirley Grillo of Belmont, NY; nieces & nephews.

The family of Felicia J. Hornell – Julio “Bozo” Cartella, 91, of Locust Drive, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning (May 28, 2019) at Elizabeth Church Manor Nursing Home in Binghamton, NY.

Born in Hornell on March 9, 1928, he was the son of the late Angelo and Josephine (Marino) Cartella.

On November 9, 1952, he was married at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Brooklyn, NY to Nancy Andreozzi.  A lifelong resident of Hornell, Julio was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and past Commander of the Hornell VFW Post 2250 and American Legion Post 440. In life, he served his community in several jobs but was best known for working for Erie Lackawanna Railroad, starting a grocery delivery business “City Delivery” with his brother Pete, and working for 34 years at the local telephone company. In December 1968, Julio was recognized as a hero for saving the life of a local youth after discovering a partially submerged car over an embankment while on a nighttime delivery for the telephone company.

Always generous and jovial, he enjoyed traveling and making friends wherever he was, his yearly excursions to Key West, camping with his family, and helping others. He will be remembered for being a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend but most of all known as everyone’s “Bozo” for his sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by brothers Francis and Peter; sisters Mary (infant), Mary Andrezzi, Angeline Eason, and Rose Conine, and great grandson Joseph “Joey” Rymanowski.

He is survived by his loving wife Nancy of 66 years, son Angelo “Michael” (Cynthia) Cartella of Canisteo,  daughters Mary Ann (William) Valentine of Canisteo, Antoinette “Toni” (Dennis) Flint of Greenwood, and Josephine “Jo Ann” (James) Rheinheimer of Binghamton; brothers Carl (Mary) Cartella of Hornell, Francis “Butch” (Beth) Cartella of Almond;  sister Josephine “Josie” Brown of Hornell; his brother-in-law, David T. Andrezzi of Hornell; goddaughter Josephine “Joann” Kuhn of Hornell; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to specially thank the nurses and aides of Elizabeth Church Manor for the exceptional care and compassion given to Julio during his stay.

Daniel H. “Dan” Hawkins – 71 – of 146 Sutherby Ave., Hornell, NY, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon (May 27, 2019) at his home.

Born in Washington, DC on May 10, 1948, he was the son of Raymond & Margaret (Haynes) Hawkins.

Dan grew up in Adelphi, MD and attended High Point High School in Beltsville, MD.  He later received his GED at Bladensburg, MD.

For over 25 years, Dan was employed as a Union Printer for Pike & Fisher Printing in Silver Spring, MD.  For about 10 years worked in the fabricating department at West Sheet Metal in Sterling, VA.  He has resided in Hornell for the past 6 years.

Dan was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting (especially deer hunting & dove hunting) and fishing.  He also loved spending time pitching horseshoes.

Surviving are 2 sons, Daniel (Laura) Hawkins of Boyce, VA and Robert “Rob” (Laura) Hawkins of Silver Spring, MD; 1 brother, Steve (Jackie) Hawkins of North Carolina; 5 grandchildren, Heather Hawkins, Connor Hawkins, Calleigh Hawkins, Brittany Hawkins and Tommy Hawkins; several nieces & nephews.
