Francine Colón – 54 – of Hornell passed away on Friday, March 8^th, 2019 following a brave and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in the Bronx on November 11, 1964, she was the daughter of Daniel & Sylvia (Robello) Colón.

Francine grew up in Plattekill, NY and attended Wallkill High School.  She later graduated Arlington High School in Poughkeepsie, NY (Class of 1982).  After graduation she attended Marist College in Poughkeepsie where she majored in social work.

She was an accomplished dancer and was employed for many years as a dance instructor at Arthur Murray Dance Studio.  She had also been employed as a fitness coordinator at All Sport Fitness Center in Poughkeepsie.  She resided in Los Angeles, CA for many years and held various jobs from working for a match making service to a sales clerk at Nordstrom Retail Store, was an office manager at Blockbuster, and later as an office administrator.

In 2012 Francine became a resident of Hornell and had been employed for a time at Tractor Supply as a sales clerk. She enjoyed dancing & cooking.

Francine was preceded in death by her father Daniel Colón and her sister Stephanie Feringa. She is survived by her brother, Daniel (Michelle) Colón of Fultonville, NY; her sister, Joyce Colón of Maryland; several nieces, nephews & cousins.

At Francine’s request there will be no calling hours.  Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.

James L. “Jim” Bacon – 72 – of 160 East Avenue, Hornell, died Friday afternoon, March 8, 2019 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Hornell on August 25, 1946, he was the son of Frederick and Mildred (Hann) Bacon.

Jim grew up in Hornell and attended Hornell High School.  He enlisted in the US Army in 1964, serving his country for 21 years.  He is a Vietnam Veteran and was stationed in several places around the world, including Vietnam and Germany.  During his years of service, Jim received many awards and decorations, including the Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Devices, and the Expert Badge (Rifle) Medal.  He retired as Staff Sergeant E6 in 1986.

Following his honorable discharge from the US Army, Jim returned to Hornell and began working for John Giles in Arkport as a delivery truck driver.  He retired in 2008.  Since that time, Jim has enjoyed his retirement years watching NASCAR and especially enjoyed rooting for Tony Stewart.

Jim first married the former Sharon (Townsend) Coleman on September 8, 1973.  Years and circumstances pulled them apart, but on April 13, 2002, they were remarried and were fortunate to spend four years together before her death on July 11, 2006.  James was also predeceased by his parents and two brothers, infant Jeff Bacon and Charles Bacon in 2011.

Surviving are his daughter Regina Darrin of Hornell; two sons, James Bacon and Mike (LeeAnn) Bacon; grandchildren, Shelby (Ben) Dewey of Hornell, Bethany (Sean Kellogg) Darrin and Payton Darrin of Hornell, Cheyanne Bacon of Hornell, Mason Drew and Breydon Drew of Hornell, and Jessica & Christopher; his beloved great-granddaughter, Nora Dewey; 6 brothers, William Bacon, Roy (Debbie) Bacon, Ron (Wanda) Bacon, Larry (Diane) Bacon, Richard (Donna) Bacon, Philip (Joan) Bacon; sister, Elaine Bacon; sister-in-law, Debbie Bacon; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family of James L. “Jim” Bacon will receive friends on Friday, March 15^th from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  A funeral service with military honors will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 6:00 PM. Final interment will be in Rural Cemetery.

In recognition of Jim’s service to his country, the American Flag at the Dagon Funeral Home will be flown at half-staff.

Nancy L. Nisbet – (84) – of 7997 Rose Rd., Hornell (Town of Fremont), died Thursday afternoon (March 7, 2019) at St. James Mercy Hospital following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on November 6, 1934, she was the daughter of Ralph & Theresa (Falci) Buono.

Nancy grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1952).  For a time, she was employed in the catalog department of JC Penny’s, primarily during the holiday season.  For about 10 years, Nancy served as Assessor for the Town of Fremont.

She had been a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Hornell and later was a member of the Big Creek Methodist Church.  Nancy enjoyed gardening (both flowers & vegetables) and also enjoyed cooking and was especially fond of processing & cooking the venison for the guys during hunting season.  She was an avid reader and could always be found having a book in her possession wherever she may be.

Nancy was an avid NASCAR fan who enjoyed rooting for her favorite drivers, Jeff Gordon & Chase Elliott.  She loved the days spent with her family camping, especially attending dirt races on Super Dirt Week at the New York State Fairgrounds.  She also loved rooting for the Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees.

In her younger years, when her sons were involved in scouting, Nancy served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and was later involved in Boy Scouts of America.  She was extremely proud of the fact that all three of her sons rose to the rank of Eagle Scout.  Nancy was active in Hornell Little League and Hornell Babe Ruth Baseball during the many years that her sons were playing.

She was married on June 28, 1953 to Howard W. Nisbet JR who survives.  Also surviving are three sons, Howard “Howie” (Dorothy) Nisbet III of Hornell, Timothy (Donna Walker) Nisbet of Stokesdale, NC and Doug (Grace) Nisbet of Williamson, NY; 3 sisters, Gloria Griffin of Spanish Fort, AL, Nicoletta “Nikki” McGrosso of Hornell and Kathleen (Skip) Wood of Hornell; 10 grandchildren, Brian Nisbet, Megan (Chris) Dailey, Daniel (Jennifer) Sirianni, Cara (August) Antol, Robert Sirianni, Rikki Nisbet, Patrick Nisbet, Ethan Nisbet, Zachary Nisbet and Christopher (Kari) Bocianski; 7 great-grandchildren, several nieces & nephews.

The family of Nancy L. Sharon M. Bush – (68) – of 7668 State Route 53, Kanona, formerly of Hornell, passed away peacefull Thursday morning (March 7, 2019) at her home, following a long illness.

Born in Corning on June 4, 1950, she was the daughter of Eldon & June (Salvate) Benjamin.

Sharon grew up in Hornell and attended Hornell High School.  She had been employed as a Nurse’s Aide and Health Care Provider for Sue’s Rest Home of Hornell and Maple Crest Manor of Hornell.

An avid bingo player, Sharon loved traveling to such places as Salamanca, Dansville, Corning, Bath and Hornell to play bingo.  She loved her family and enjoyed hosting an annual Family Reunion at her home where family would come an spend the entire weekend.  A great time was always had by all!  Sharon also loved watching old western movies and old Western TV with a little bit of Family Feud thrown in for good measure.

She was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Gloria Valimont and Maryanne Alexander.

Survivors include the love of her life of 25 yrs, Raymond L. Clark of Kanona; 2 daughters, Dawn M. (Gary Day) Gardner of Kanona and Dana L. (Raymond London) Rougex of Hornell; 1 son, Vance N. Gardner, JR of Alfred; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

At Sharon’s request there will be no calling hours.  Private services will be held at the convenience of the family with final interment in Woodhull Cemetery.

Family & friends will be invited to attend a “Celebration of Life” to be held at a later date.

Robert P. “Bob” Gennett – 88 – formerly of 25 Russell St., Canisteo, died Tuesday afternoon (March 5, 2019) at Elderwood at Hornell Nursing Facility where he had resided for the past 7 months.

Born in Barre, VT on August 9, 1930, he was the son of Lawrence & Violet (Durett) Gennet.

Bob resided most of his life in either Vermont or New York State and had resided in the Hornell – Canisteo area for about 50 years.

Although Bob had no church affiliation, he was a very spiritual man.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing golf and had been a member of the Canisteo American Legion, the Hornell VFW, the Hornell Moose Lodge, Hornell Eagles Club and the Hornell Association.  He especially enjoyed spending quality time with his friends at Southside Tavern in Hornell.  In his younger days, Bob was a talented boxer and at one time held the title of Featherweight Champion of the Vermont Golden Gloves.

Bob was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Donna Booth who died July 29, 2018.

Surviving are his sister, Doreen Weeks of Vermont; Donna’s children, Eva (William) Boyles of Hammondsport and Hugh (Terry) Booth of Watertown, WI; along with many friends in the Hornell/Canisteo area.

Mary A. Ogorzalek – 65 – of 1840 Loomis Road, Rexville (formerly of Canisteo), died Monday (March 4, 2019) at Highland Hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Middletown, CT on May 25, 1953, she was the daughter of Joseph and Stacia (Jagoda) Ogorzalek.

Mary grew up in Rockfall, CT and attended Middletown High School.  She lived in Rockfall until moving to the Canisteo/Rexville area about 20 years ago to be closer to her brother and family.  She worked as a receptionist at Comfort Inn hotels in both Connecticut and New York.  Most recently, she was employed as a cashier at Shurfine (the former Big M) in Canisteo.  Mary truly enjoyed working at Shurfine where her coworkers and customers became her dear friends.

In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by one brother, Thomas Ogorzalek.

Surviving are her brother, Larry (Lorraine) Ogorzalek of Rexville; nephews, Chris (Kim) Ogorzalek of Arkport, Shane (Monica) Ogorzalek of Howard, Jason (Rachael) Ogorzalek of Arkport; and her beloved great-nephews and great-nieces, Krystian, Alaina, and Reaghan Ogorzalek and Vincent and Joseph Capluzzi.  Mary is also survived by her dear friend, Pat (Martin) Gaffney & family of Portland, CT; and many family members in Connecticut.

Mary enjoyed scrapbooking and loved the time spent with Pat working on scrapbooks, crafting, and making cards.  Their special lifelong friendship was a treasure to Mary.

Eleanore Lorraine “Ellie” Burzycki – 88 – of 27 East Ave., Arkport, died Tuesday evening (March 5^th, 2019) at her home, following a wonderful life.

She was born in Buffalo, NY on February 23, 1931 to Joseph and Clara Ciesielski.  Ellie was raised on Sunnyside Ave., a name that seemed to fit her personality!  She graduated from Riverside High School in 1949 where she concentrated in secretarial studies.

She was married to the late Longin “Lon” Ludwig Burzycki, the love of her life, in 1956 at St. Florian’s Church in Buffalo.  Lon brought her to Hornell shortly after they were married where he was currently living.  They were lucky to celebrate 53 wonderful years together.

Ellie and Lon re-located to Arkport in 1958 after purchasing the cable franchise for Arkport Television.  Ellie put her secretarial skills to use and kept the books for their business.

She was employed for the past 39 years by the Hornell City School District.  Ellie loved her job, her students and fellow employees. They kept her going after Lon passed and it broke her heart to retire in June, 2018.  She also served as crossing guard for the Arkport School District for 22 years.

Ellie was passionate about sports.   Whether it was hockey, baseball, golf, basketball, soccer or car racing she enjoyed chatting about the games. But her favorite sport was football and her beloved Hornell Red Raiders.  She also enjoyed playing cards, gambling and sitting and visiting with friends on her porch at 27 East Avenue.  Ellie loved kids and they loved her in return.  This was evident when the H.H.S. Class of 2012 dedicated the 78^th edition of the Hornell-Maple Leaf Yearbook to her. She was very proud of this award.

Eleanore was a member of the Arkport American Legion/Auxiliary Post #1248, the Hornell American Legion, the AMVETS No. #245, the Hornell Elks Lodge, and the Hornell Association.  She enjoyed her weekly visits to these establishments.  She was always looked after and cared for by her fellow members.

She was preceded in death by her husband Longin; her brother Richard Ciesielski (the late Elizabeth Ciesielski); and infant son Eugene. She is survived by her daughters Judith Green of Arkport, (and her children Jared and Elanna), and Heidi (Jamie) Rankin of Ormstown, Quebec (and their children Hallie, Kellan and Kendall); her great-grandson Xavier, (son of Jared Green); her best friend of 80 years Evelyn May of Tonawanda; several nieces and nephews.

A Party in her honor was held on her 88^th birthday Feb 23^rd.  It was truly of celebration of her life. She was blessed with an out pouring of cards, wishes, stories, flowers and gifts but most of all the love and laughter of those who attended.

A service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Kenneth P. “Ken” Mikko – 54 – of 6752 County Route 10, Bath, NY died unexpectedly Monday morning (March 4, 2019) at his home.

Born in Rochester on February 19, 1965, he was the son of Kenneth & Phyllis (Bissell) Mikko.

Ken grew up in Rochester and was a graduate of Edison Tech High School (class of 1983).  He was a veteran of the US Army, serving his country from 1983 – 1985.

Following his honorable discharge from the US Army, Ken resided briefly in Tuscaloosa, AL, returning to Rochester where he lived for about 15 years.  He has resided in the Bath are since 2001.  While living in Bath, Ken had been employed as a cashier at Arby’s and also McDonalds.

Surviving are his son, Kenneth Mikko of Comstock, NY; 2 daughters, Valerie Mikko of Bath and Angela (Robert) Gilboe of Rochester; 1 brother, Christopher Pinson of Rochester; 7 grandchildren, Trevor Mikko, Jaylon Mikko, Jashon Mikko, Zaybrianna Cage, Zorazena Simon, Isabella Gilboe and Dominick Gilboe; nieces & nephews.

Mae E. Harrison – 90 – of 1946 County Rd., 16, Beaver Dams, NY (Town of Orange) died Saturday afternoon (March 2, 2019) following a long illness.

Born in Bronx, NY on April 15, 1928, she was the daughter of Sven & Lyylli (Lehonen) Mikkonen.

At the age of 16, Mae moved to Freeport, Long Island and began working as a telephone operator for New York Bell Telephone Company.  When she was 21, she moved to Whiting, NJ and was employed for about four years as an operator for New Jersey Bell Telephone Company.

On April 1, 1950 she married Meredith W. “Mert” Harrison and began raising her family.  For many years they resided in Howell, NJ where Mae continued to work for New Jersey Bell.  She retired in 1984 as a “residential representative.”

While living in New Jersey, Mae was an active member of First Assembly of God Church in Freehold, NJ, serving as a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Church Choir and a member of the Church Women’s Group.  Moving to Beaver Dams in 2010, Mae was a member of the Anchor Church in Watkins Glen, NY.

An avid reader, May loved reading the Bible along with other books & magazines.  She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting & knitting.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Meredith W. Harrison who died May 23, 2018.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Lilyan Harrison Baker of Phoenix, AZ and Cynthia (James) Mancil of Beaver Dams, NY; 8 grandchildren, Paul Mancil, Matthew (Rebecca) Mancil, Melissa (Joseph) Clark, Meredith Baker, Melody Baker, Kaylee Baker, Jamie Baker and Waylon Baker; 8 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

Anne M. Lorow, 86, of Taylor Mill, KY, formerly of Almond, New York, passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2018.

Born in Honeoye Falls, NY on September 18, 1932, she was the daughter of William & Frances (Fisher) Boag.

Anne grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1950).

For a brief period, she worked in the cafeteria at the Alfred-Almond Central School and for about 30 years served as a teller at Key Bank in Alfred, retiring about 23 years ago.  Following her retirement, she resided in Florida for over 20 years.

She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed reading Danielle Steele novels.  She had been member of the Red Hat Ladies and also a member of the Almond Union of Churches.

Anne was married on October 20, 1951 to Dale Lorow who died in 2007.  She was also preceded in death by her sister, Donna Boag.

She is survived by her daughter: Robin (Brian) Fischer; sons, Doug Lorow, Steve (Dee) Lorow and Scott (Debbie) Lorow; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Saturday (March 2, 2019) at 11:00 AM at the Almond Union of Churches with Rev. Charlie Emerson officiating.  Final interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Almond.
