Tanya A. Clark – (39) – of 26 Sawyer St., Hornell, died unexpectedly Monday evening (February 18, 2019).

Born in Dansville, NY on March 21, 1979, and was the daughter of William Clark and the former Terry Beach.

Tanya grew up in South Dansville and while in the 5th grade her family moved to Hornell. She was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1997) and later attended Morrisville State College. She had resided in the Hornell / Canisteo area for most of her adult life.

She had been employed for a time as an office manager for the former Testoria Rail in Hornell and had served as a bartender for several local pubs & taverns. In her younger years, Tanya had a deep affection for horses and enjoyed show horses and equestrian riding. She also enjoyed playing softball and fishing.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Halley Smith and Natalie Smith; 1 son, Lucas Smith; her mother & step-father, Terry & Dan Zayac of Chesterfield, VA; her father & step-mother, William & Yvonne Clark of Wayland; her sister, Melissa Clark of Buffalo, NY; her maternal grandparents, Tom & Betty Beach of Arkport; her paternal grandmother, Arlene Clark of Hornell; her extended family, the father of her children, Stan Smith of Canisteo, Zach Mozzar of Florida,Jessica (Eric) Marino, Carly (Brian) Dooley and Shane Zayac, all of North Carolina; Tim & Julie Timmerman of Arkport.

John E. Ninos – (91) – of 34 Hillcrest Dr., Alfred, NY, died unexpectedly early Monday morning, February 18, 2019, at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell NY.

John was born in the Village of Plaka, on the Island of Milos, Greece, on January 28, 1928. He was the son of Emanuel & Katherine Ninos.

John grew up in Greece and attended Plaka Public School. In 1947 at the age of 19, he along with his mother, moved to the United States to join his father and brother who had previously moved to America.

Although John had intended to continue his education, he began working with his father and brother Bill at their restaurant, “The Washington Restaurant,” in Bolivar, NY. In 1949 John married Angela Italiano. Later that year the entire family moved to Alfred, NY where John, along with his father and brother purchased the University Diner, aka “The Dog Cart.” In 1950 they purchased the Collegiate Restaurant. As a family, they operated both restaurants until the University Diner was destroyed by fire in 1953. John and Angie took full ownership of the Collegiate Restaurant operating until their “retirement” in 1996, when they sold the business to their son, John. He continued to stay active and lend a helping hand for many years.

John had a deep love of the Alfred community. One of his greatest pleasures was meeting and befriending the many people who came through Alfred. His smile and greetings at the Collegiate and throughout the community touched the lives of many.

He served two terms as president of the Alfred Lions Club. He was a member of the F&AM (Masons Lodge) #944 and served four terms as president of the Alfred Business Association. Both John and Angie received their Honorary Doctorate degrees from Alfred University on December 12, 1993. Their contributions to Alfred University were recognized by the Alumni Association in 1986 when they were named Honorary Alumni.

In his younger years, John enjoyed playing Tennis, Ping-Pong, & Racquetball with his friends. Throughout the years he also enjoyed fishing, woodworking & gardening. He enjoyed spending quality time with his family at his lake house on Grass Lake, in the Indian River Lakes region. John served as an officer on the Grass Lake Association.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Demetrius “James” Ninos, and William “Bill” Ninos.

John is survived by his wife of 69 years, the former Angela “Angie” Italiano. His proudest achievements are his four children, James (Karrie) Ninos of Alfred, Michael (Melissa) Ninos, of Murphys, CA, John (Chelly) Ninos, of Alfred, and Nikolas (Kera) Ninos, of Buffalo, NY and eight grandchildren; Jill (Bryan) Crandall, Johnny (Ashleigh) Ninos, Kolby (Kristen) Ninos, Trevor Ninos, Jody (Chuck) soon to be Skipper, Austin Williford, Ari Ninos, and Niko Ninos. Also, five great-grandchildren and several nieces & nephews.

The family of John E. Ninos will receive friends on Monday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 1:00 PM at St. Jude Parish Church, Lower College Drive, (SUNY Alfred Campus), Alfred, NY.

Maureen Lynn Bossard – 72 – of 93 ½ Maple St., Hornell, died unexpectedly Friday morning (February 8, 2019) at her home.

Born in Hornell on April 6, 1946, she was the daughter of John & Janet (Osterhout) Schwartz.

Maureen grew up in Canisteo and was a graduate of Canisteo Central School (class of1964). She later became a licensed X-Ray technician through St. James Mercy Hospital and had been employed for about 4 years as an X-Ray technician at Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, NY.

Deciding to continue her education, she earned her Accounting Degree at Ithaca College and, for about 5 years, worked at Arthur Anderson Accounting in Toledo, OH. Changing careers once again, Maureen purchased a tractor-trailer and worked as an independent truck driver and also drove truck for J.B. Hunt Trucking of Little Rock, AR. Finally, Maureen purchased a tractor-trailer with a “tanker” and, again, drove truck as an independent driver. She retired about 7 years ago and had resided in Hornell for the past four years.

In addition to her parents, John & Janet Schwartz, Maureen was preceded in death by her sister, Jewell Schwartz.

Survivors include her brother, John “Jack” (Barbara) Schwartz of Orlando, FL.

Connie Elizabeth “Liz” Kraft – 54 – of 22 Emily Dr., Corning, NY, formerly of Hornell, died early Wednesday morning (February 6, 2019) as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born in Hornell on August 4, 1964, she was the daughter of James & Barbara (Foreman) Kraft.

Connie grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School class of 1982. She resided in Florida for a time, returned to the Hornell area and enrolled in St. James School of Nursing where she received her Registered Nurse Diploma, passed the Board, and became a Licensed RN in the State of New York.

Moving back to Florida, Connie served as a registered nurse at several hospitals. About 20 years ago, she decided to come back to New York State and had been employed as a registered nurse and dialysis specialist at several hospitals, including Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, Arnot Ogdon Hospital in Elmira, Corning Hospital and St. James Mercy Hospital. For the past three years she served as a nurse and case manager for CareFirst Hospice where she provided care & comfort to countless patients at the end of their lives. She especially loved her work at CareFirst and was regarded as one of the most caring and compassionate hospice nurses that anyone could ever imagine. It was a true “Calling”.

Following the death of her parents, where Connie served as the hospice nurse for her Dad, Connie took on the role of “Family Anchor”, keeping the Kraft family and the extended family together via telephone, email & facebook. Without children of her own, she made special efforts to recognize and connect with nieces & nephews. She loved to travel, and was the ultimate brick-and-mortar and internet shopper. She always made the effort to stay in touch with former co-workers and to maintain the bonds of friendship.

Connie is survived by her fiancé, Curtiss Cole; 3 sisters, Patti Kraft of Hornell, Donna Dailey of Buffalo and Kate Kraft of Buffalo; 4 brothers, Tom (Janet) Kraft of Concord, NC, Jim (Michele) Kraft of Endicott, NY, Andy Kraft of Rochester and Rich Kraft of Hornell; several nieces & nephews. She will also be sadly missed by her canine companion, “Cole”.

Arthur J. “Art” Roselli – 79 – of 10104 Oak Hill Road, Arkport, died Thursday afternoon (January 24, 2019) at his home, following a brief illness.

Born in Hornell on August 9, 1939, he was the son of John & Lenore (Bronsen) Roselli.

Art, affectionately known as “Bebe” grew up in Hornell where he attended St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1958) While in high school, Art excelled in sports, especially football & track. In 2010 he was honored by being inducted into the Hornell High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Throughout his adult life, Art worked in the construction industry and for many years was employed as a foreman for LeChase Construction Company. He retired about 30 years ago.

He had been a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. Art enjoyed landscaping, especially planting flowers, trees & bushes. He also constructed three small ponds on his property, complete with stonework, waterfalls and, of course, stocked with goldfish. He also loved caring & playing with his beloved “Canine Friends”, Spring & Princess.

Art was an avid Buffalo Bills Football fan and especially loved rooting for them during the Super Bowl years. His greatest joy, however, was following his grandchildren’s sporting & school events. Without a doubt, he was their greatest fan!

A loving husband, father, grandfather & great-grandfather, Art will also be remembered as a true friend with an ever-present smile and a twinkle in his eye. He will be sadly missed by everyone that had the pleasure of knowing him!

In addition to his parents, Art was preceded in death by his brother, Francis “Buck” Roselli and his infant granddaughter, Angelina Eicher.

He was married in 2001 to the former Barbara Morsch who survives. Also surviving are 1 son, John Roselli of Hornell; 3 daughters, Karen (John) Dagon of Hornell, Kathryn (Joe Ebert) Roselli of Alfred and Anne Rovito of Harpswell, ME; his step-children, Tammy (Scott Smith) Roosa of Arkport,            Ty (Cyndi) Forbes of Spartanburg, SC, Tracey Bennett of Virginia and Kelly (Tom) Weidman of Farmington, NC; 7 grandchildren, John Dagon JR, James Dagon, Sam Dagon, Tagan Rovito, Josh Hillier, Drake Hillier and Jax Roosa; 1 great-grandson, Cadian Buck; several nieces, nephews & cousins.

Gerald D. “Jerry” Canty – 84 – of 47 East Washington St., Hornell, died early Wednesday morning (January 23, 2019), at Elderwood Nursing Facility in Hornell following a long illness.

He was born in Hornell on March 12, 1934, and was the son of Dennis & Ruth (Logue) Canty.

A lifelong resident of Hornell, Jerry was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1952) and later attended Alfred State College.

In 1953, Jerry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving his country during the Korean conflict until his honorable discharge in 1955. The story he tells is that he was part of a group known as the “Fearsome 12” and once it was heard that they were headed to Korea, they ended the war.

Following his discharge from the Marines, Jerry returned to Hornell and began working at Loohns Cleaners which later became Morgan Linens. For over 40 years he served as a Route Salesman, “retiring” in 1996. Following his “retirement” Jerry returned to the workforce as a custodian for the Hornell School System, primarily at the Hornell Middle School, retiring in 2004.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. Throughout the years, Jerry enjoyed youth sports and served as a basketball coach for the Hornell Biddy Basketball League, the YMCA 5th & 6th, and the 7th & 8th Grade Traveling Teams. In 1986 he was awarded the YMCA Man of the Year in appreciation of his many years of volunteer leadership as a coach. Also, for 12 years he volunteered his time to the Hornell midget football league serving as coach for the Colts. In 1982 he received an award for his consistent interest, dependable support and unselfish service to the league. However, he found his greatest enjoyment simply following his children & grandchildren’s sporting events. He was their biggest cheerleader!

In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Don Canty and Jack Canty; 3 sisters, Eleanor Jankowski, Patricia Curran and Vivian Haring.

He was married on August 22, 1964 to the former Ruth Egmond who survives. Also surviving are 6 children, Kathy (Robert McLaughlin) Canty of Hornell, David (Annie Allison) Canty of Hornell; Tim (Melanie) Canty of Fort Mill, SC; Helen (Matt) Shick of Hornell, Joanne Canty of Canandaigua and Mary Ellen Canty of Hornell; 2 sisters, Nancy Douglass of Horseheads and Shirley Bettinger of GA; 7 grandchildren, Abbie, Alex and Joe Shick; Jerry and Jack Canty; Eadie Allison & Jimmy Canty; several nieces & nephews, sister and brother in laws, friends and his most faithful companion Charlie.

Richard J. “Rich” Dunn – 56 – of 7978 State Route 36 (The Oaks), Arkport, NY died Friday evening (January 18, 2019) at home, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on December 12, 1962, he was the son of Laurence “Larry” & Margaret (Rechichi) Dunn.

Rich grew up in Arkport and was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class of 1981). In 1983 he received his Associate’s Degree in Environmental Science from Delhi State College (SUNY Delhi).

He had been employed for several years at Gunlocke Corporation in Wayland and for nearly 20 years served as Assistant Commissioner for the Steuben County Landfill, Bath, NY. For about 15 years, Rich was employed as Maintenance Supervisor Greater Southern Tier BOCES in Hornell, retiring in 2016.

Rich had been a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. He was also a member of the Sons of American Legion in Arkport. Rich enjoyed hunting (especially deer & turkey) and loved spending time with his friends at a hunting camp in Canaseraga, NY. He was an avid NASCAR fan and also enjoyed classic cars, having collected many throughout the years. Rich was a great friend to all and was always willing to help anyone or to simply “BE THERE” in their time of need! He also loved making maple syrup to be enjoyed by his family & friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Paddock (died 2017) and also his father, Laurence “Larry” Dunn (died 2017).

Rich was married on August 24, 2002 to the former Terrie Payne Paddock who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Jennifer (Jim) Mac Phail of Addison; his daughter-in-law, Tina Paddock of Henrietta, NY; his mother, Margaret Dunn of Arkport; 2 brothers, Michael (Linda) Dunn of Haymarket, VA and Daniel (Michelle) Dunn of Getzville, NY; 4 grandchildren, Mickayla (James Willis) Bailey, Dylyn Bailey, Saige Paddock and Jaide Paddock; 1 great-granddaughter, Adalynn Willis; several nieces & nephews.

Kimberly A. “Kim” Hawley – 43 – of 31 Church St., Hornell, died Sunday evening (January 13, 2019) at St. James Mercy Hospital, surrounded by her family, following a brave and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Hornell on June 15, 1975, she was the daughter of Schuyler & Mary (Roberts) Hawley.

Kim grew up in Hornell and attended St. Ann’s School. She later graduated from Hornell High School (Class of 1993). While in high school and for about 3 years after graduation, she was employed at Wegman’s Grocery of Hornell in various capacities and departments, including cashier, front end coordinator at the front desk, meat department, deli department and primarily the bakery.

In 1996 Kim moved to Rome, NY where she earned her Associate’s Degree at Mohawk Valley College, graduating in 1999 as a paralegal. For the next 15 years she served as a paralegal for various lawyers in the Utica, Rochester & Hornell areas.

Moving back to Hornell in 2001, Kim. In addition to serving as a paralegal, was also employed at the former Elsenheimer Chevrolet as a “Title Clerk” from 2001 – 2004. For six years (2004 – 2010) she worked at Alfred State College as assistant manager at Friendly’s food Court. During this time, she served as a legal secretary for Shults & Shults Law Firm of Hornell and as a paralegal for Boylan & Brown Law Firm of Rochester, NY.

From 2012 – 2016, Kim worked as a purchasing agent, sales lady and in the advertising department of Erica Leigh Clothing of Hornell. In December, 2016, she began working for Venture Forth of Niagara Falls, working with Hospice patients and Alzheimer’s patients as a “traveling medical aid” throughout Steuben County, Allegany County & Livingston County. Since moving back to Hornell in 2001, Kim served as a “freelance” paralegal, helping her friends & family with legal problems.

She was a former member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and had been a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. In recent years, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hornell. In December, 2015, Kim became an Ordained Minister and since that time has celebrated several marriages, baptisms & funerals. As an ordained minister Kim has also served as a councilor for various women’s groups.

Kim is survived by 1 son, William (Angela) Pratt III of Hornell; 7 daughters, Allison (Luke Yarka) Pratt, Samantha Jordan, Taylor (Austin Miller) Jordan, Kylie Turner, Lillian Hawley, Payton Hann & Gracy Hawley, all of Hornell; her father, Schuyler Hawley of Hornell; her mother, Mary Hawley Cash of Saquite, NY; 2 brothers, Schuyler “Sky” Hawley of Hornell and Alec Hawley of Florida; 1 sister, Katrina (Joe) Shunk of Rome, NY; 10 grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces & nephews.

David S. “Dave” May – 50 – of 40 Meadows Park, Arkport, died Thursday evening (January 3, 2019) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, following a long illness.

Born in Endicott, NY on November 10, 1968, he was the son of David & Sharon (Holliday) May.

Dave grew up in Arkport and was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class on 1986). A carpenter by trade, he had been employed at DDS Construction of Rochester, Patrick Concrete of Rochester and Air Vent Aluminum of Arkport. Dave loved working with his hands and throughout the years remodeled numerous homes and also built many porches & decks.

As an outdoorsman, Dave loved riding 4-wheelers and also competing in demolition derby events. His favorite moments, however, were simply spending time with his son, Greg.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, David & Sharon May.

Surviving are his son, Greg May of Arkport; 2 sisters, Cathy (Jay) Sugden of Green Cove Springs, FL and Becky (Gary) Nowaczyk of Fort Deposit, MD; his “Best Friend”, Charis Barber; nieces & nephews.

Annamarie Lowry – 67 – of 36 Cameron Ave., Hornell, died late Monday evening (December 31, 2018) at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (Presbyterian Hospital), surrounded by family and friends.

Born in Newburgh, NY on November 26, 1951, she was the daughter of Paul & Mary (Breitenbach) Taeschner.

Annamarie grew up in Newburgh and was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy High School. She later graduated from SUNY Geneseo where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She had also earned more than 30 credits towards her Master’s Degree. She was married in 1977 to Dean Lowry and together they resided in Punxsutawney and DuBois, PA for several years where she officially began her teaching career.

Following the untimely death of her husband in an automobile accident in 1985, Annamarie moved back to the Hornell area. For more than 25 years, she served as a 2nd grade teacher at Arkport Central School. After 33 years of service, she retired in 2011. She loved her students and her “Arkport family.” Teaching was not just a job to her, it was a passion.

Her love of children and learning didn’t stop at work. Annamarie was a Campfire Leader for many years, where she fostered a love of learning and community service for the troop of which her daughter, Michele, was a part. She loved working on jigsaw, crossword, and other puzzles and was an avid reader who enjoyed reading novels and historical fiction. She also loved attending Theatre Productions in New York City and Rochester, NY.

Annamarie loved to travel and go on adventures with her daughter, her family, and her friends. She and Michele enjoyed exploring and learning about the history of all of the places that they went. However, she especially enjoyed taking sunny vacations to such places as Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head Island, and Florida. Annamarie had been a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.

In addition to her husband, Dean Lowry, Annamarie was also preceded in death by her parents, Paul & Mary Taeschner.

Surviving are her beloved daughter and best friend, Michele Lowry of Hornell; 3 brothers, Paul (Jeanne) Taeschner of Canandaigua, NY, Michael (Carolyn) Taeschner of Watauga, TX and Daniel (Mary) Taeschner of Newburgh, NY; several nieces & nephews.

In the last month of her life, in addition to spending every minute with her daughter, Michele, she especially enjoyed spending time with her nephew, Adam (Natasha) Taeschner, and receiving daily pictures of his daughter, Charlotte, who brought her such joy. She also enjoyed spending time with her brothers, her cousins, Jane, Cathy, Cara, and Jenna, and her best friend Shelley (Glenn) Thomas and her daughter Megan. She will be missed by many more cousins, family, and friends.
