Luella A. VanScoter

Luella A. VanScoter – (82) – a resident of Hornell Gardens, formerly of 353 Ontario St., Hornell died Monday evening (March 17, 2014) at St. James Hospital following a brief illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, she was born June 24, 1931 and was the daughter of Olmstead & Adell (Colley) VanScoter.

Luella attended Hornell High School and was later employed as a waitress at several local restaurants, including Jumbo’s, Big Elms and Country Kitchen.  She was had been employed for many years as a machine operator at the former SKF Industries in Hornell  and for about 5 years she operated a Children’s Day Care out of her home. 

In her younger years, Luella enjoyed bowling and was an avid bingo player in her later years.  She was devoted to her family and actually helped raise her brothers & sisters.  She was later blessed with a large family of 11 children.

Luella was preceded in death by her brothers, John H. VanScoter and Bernard VanScoter.

Surviving are her children, Richard Harrington of Nashville, TN, Corrine Maile of Leroy, NY, Katherine (Amy) Harrington of Hornell, Michael (Ruth) Harrington of Bladenboro, NC, Gerald (Debbie) Freeland of LaPlace, LA, Ronald (Linda Pierce) Freeland of Canisteo, David (Chris) Freeland of Conklin, NY, Steven (Carol) Freeland of Hornell, Thomas (Nancy) Freeland of Henrietta, NY, John (Lori) VanScoter of Hornell and James VanScoter of Hornell; 4 sisters Millie (Bob) Griffin of Gulf Port, MS, Helen Crosson of Hornell, Dolores Guthrie of Sandy Lake, PA and Fay Parada of Arkport; 2 brothers, Ron (Marianne) VanScoter of Arkport and Karl VanScoter of Meadville, PA; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews.  

The family of Luella A. VanScoter will receive friends on Friday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where a Memorial Service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 7:00 PM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.

Luella’s family request that memorial contributions in her name be made to the Hornell Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Rd., Hornell, NY 14843.  Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home or click here to print a form.
