Laurence B. “Larry” Dunn – 82 – of 638 Pine Knoll Park, Arkport, died Saturday morning (September 23, 2017) at Hornell Gardens, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on November 28, 1934, he was the son of Eugene & Anna (Litell) Dunn.

Larry grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1953).  He was a veteran of the US Army, serving his country during the Korean Conflict.  While in the military, Larry was stationed in several locations, including Ft. Dix, NJ and also in Germany.

Following his honorable discharge from the US Army, Larry was employed as a machinist at the former SKF Industries, retiring in 1988 following 28 years of service.   Larry then worked as a carpenter for Doug Gamo Construction for 12 years.

He was a member of the Arkport American Legion and enjoyed deer hunting and also small game hunting.  Larry thoroughly enjoyed spending time and working in his “wood shop” making an assortment of wood products, including gun cabinets and toy chests.  Larry also enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Larry was preceded in death by 8 sisters and 4 brothers; Lucille Edwards, Genevieve Graham, Beverly Coddington, Mildred Spendlove, Margie Brown, Barbara Bill, Joan Marucha, Gerry Burley, Edwin, Harold, Eugene Jr., and Robert.  He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Joseph Paddock.

He was married on July 11, 1959 to the former Margaret Rechichi who survives.  Also surviving are 3 sons, Mike (Linda) Dunn of Haymarket, VA, Rich (Terrie) Dunn of Hornell and Dan (Michelle) Dunn of Getzville, NY; 1 sister, Helen Kern of Springfield, VA; 5 grandchildren, Jennifer, Eric, Adam, Alex and Ryan; 5 great-grandchildren, Mickayla, Dylyn, Saige, Jaide and Emily; several nieces & nephews.

Grace Moretti Eagan of 321 Seneca Road, North Hornell, entered into rest Saturday afternoon (September 23, 2017) at the Vincent House in Wayland, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell, she was the daughter of Lawrence G. and Lucy (Dininny) Moretti and had been married to the late Robert E. Eagan.  She resided in Rochester for several years and had also lived in New York City and Rocky Hill, CT.

Grace grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of St. Ann’s School, Hornell High School and the former Hornell Commercial Institute.  She received her advanced education from the University of Rochester; the Rochester Institute of Technology; and Queens College in New York City.

She had been employed at Neisner Brothers, Inc. in Rochester in several capacities — the last one as a buyer in New York City, having been promoted as the first female executive of the chain of 200 stores.  Her company was taken over by Ames Department Stores in Connecticut, where she was appointed Assistant Traffic Manager.

Grace returned to her family in Hornell and immediately took courses to enter the field of Real Estate with the Lang Agency, Inc.   She was active in the Western Steuben-Allegany Board of Realtors and was selected “Realtor of the Year” in 2005.  She subsequently was appointed as an honorary member after leaving the Lang Agency and retiring.

She served several years on the Curriculum Advisory Committee of Alfred State College.  She was a charter member and president of the Administrative Professionals in Rochester for two years; co-president of the St. James Auxiliary; and president of the Italian-American Women’s Club upon her return to Hornell.

In 2006, Grace was appointed a director of the Hornell Credit Union.  She was a member of the Ladies of Columbus and volunteered for the American Red Cross.  Grace also volunteered at the Erie Railroad and Toy Museum every week when it first opened and also volunteered in the later years at McAuley Manor & St. James Mercy Hospital.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  She was a member of the St. Ann’s Choir — beginning while she was in high school at early morning Mass and in later years with Our Lady of the Valley Resurrection Choir.  Grace was an active reader — especially of the news media.

While living in Rochester, Grace had the distinct honor of being recruited to become Executive Secretary to Bishop Fulton Sheen after he was appointed Bishop of the Dioceses of Rochester.  She very respectfully and regretfully had to decline this tremendous honor.

Grace was instrumental in founding a new Catholic Church in Rocky Hill, CT, where she lived for six years.  She was selected as a Co-Chairperson of the planning board and was elated that the board accepted her suggestion to name the church “St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.”

She traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada and visited several countries in Europe and Morocco in Africa and also visited the Shrine of Fatima in Portugal.

The highlight of one of her trips to Italy was having Pope John Paul II who was driving by in his Pope Mobile and shaking hands with some of her group.

Grace attended the Belmont Stakes every year and was there to watch the great horse, Secretariat, win the Triple Crown.  She was also present to see the last horse to win the Triple Crown — “Affirmed” in 1978.  She and her husband owned horses that raced at Batavia Downs, Buffalo Raceway and Roosevelt Raceway.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Francis Moretti, Raymond Moretti and Donald Moretti; her sister, Angeline Moretti Hayes; her nieces, Lucianne Moretti and Elizabeth (Hayes) Locke; her nephews, Larry Moretti, John Moretti and Robert Moretti;  her great-great niece, Layla Rose Callahan; her brothers-in-law, James O’Connor and Walter Hayes;  sisters-in-law, Shirley Moretti, Marilyn Moretti & Marian Moretti.

Surviving are two sisters, Rose Ann O’Connor and Mary Teresa Purtell, both of Hornell; several cousins including Lucy Gallese Wiley of Hornell; and several nieces and nephews.

Thresea Ann Gulliver Woolgar -68- of 50 Center St., Hornell, died Friday afternoon (September 22, 2017) in Almond following a long illness.

Born in Elmira NY on December 27, 1948, she was the eldest surviving daughter of Albert & Virginia (Erwin) Smith.

In her youth, Theresa resided in many locations throughout the Eastern United States including Troy Texas, Rochester, and Greenwood, before settling in Hornell where she has lived for nearly 30 years.

In 1991, Theresa decided to further her education and received her Human Services degree from Alfred State College (SUNY Alfred) in 1995. It was shortly afterwards that she began her career at Steuben County ARC as a program specialist where she was able to pursue her passion of helping people.

Theresa enjoyed college and continued taking distance-learning courses at Ashford University in Iowa where she was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 2008. Theresa was promoted to Program Specialist at ARC, where she retired in 2014.

Theresa and her husband, Christopher Woolgar, whom she married on July 6th, 2002, attended the Free Methodist Church of Hornell on Washington Street.

She enjoyed reading and collecting books, sewing, shopping, people watching, taking online course to broaden her education, and helping individuals with disabilities. Among her hobbies, she also enjoyed spending time with her best friend and sister-in-law, Laurel Turner-Studley, with whom she went on several cruises and, most recently, visited Epcot Center in Orlando, Florida.

In addition to her parents, Theresa was preceded in death by her former husband Larry Gulliver.

In addition to her husband, Theresa is survived by her son, Larry Gulliver, who serves as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy; 5 grandchildren Kyle Gulliver, Katelyn Dinger, Logan Filippi, Alexis Dinger, and Liam Gulliver; two sisters Nancy Smith and Molly (Jeff) Hawver; brothers-in-law, David Woolgar, Jaime (Barb Hadsell) Woolgar, Richard Woolgar; her sisters-in-law, Faye (Tom) Wickwire and Laurel (Roy Sanford) Turner-Studley; her nieces, Ginette Richard, Jessica Tonnini and Valorie Tonnini; along with her “grandkids”, Owen Sanford & Sophia Sanford.

James F. “Jim” Burrell, 67, of Rochester, NY, formerly of Hornell, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 1st at his home.

Born in Corning, NY on April 14, 1950, he was the son of Frederick and Mary (Carroll) Burrell.

Jim grew up in a household filled with the love of his caring parents and five sisters in Corning. He was a graduate of Corning East High School (Class of 1968) and he later earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Biology from Brockport State College.

As a devoted New York Yankees and New York Giants fan, rock and roll enthusiast, Scrabble and Yahtzee aficionado and dedicated umpire, Jim enjoyed a plethora of hobbies and interests. His energy, competitive nature and sense of humor could lift anyone’s spirits. Most importantly, he was a dedicated father and grandfather whose passion for family was evident in all of his life accomplishments.

Jim was first employed at the Corning Glass Works and later operated Post Time Bar, which was located next to Off Track Betting (OTB) in Corning. He then worked in Environmental Services at Arnot Ogden Hospital in Elmira. Jim spent the majority of his career in Hornell where he was employed at St. James Mercy Health as the Director of Environmental Services for 20 years. He was beloved by his many colleagues and friends. His competitive nature and sense of humor will forever be remembered through his epic “Annual Update Jeopardy”, “March Madness Pools” and “Word of the Day” challenges. Jim brought laughter and happiness to all those around him.

While Jim was proud of his accomplishments professionally, his two most proud titles were “Dad” and “Pop.” He would often share stories about the accomplishments of his four children and three precious grandchildren. His sons Kyle and Keith Burrell share their father’s competitive nature, love of sports and impeccable taste in rock music. They look forward to sharing Jim’s impressive record and CD collection with their future children.

Jim’s favorite place to be was the baseball park, whether watching the Yankees, Rochester Red Wings or umpiring at any one of many parks in Western New York. His oldest grandchild, Addisyn (daughter of Kelcie Cieslica), can often be found dancing and singing at “Pop’s house.” Addisyn loved to spend time coloring, writing, and creating science experiments with “Pop.” Living around the corner, Kelcie and Addisyn brought happiness, love and support to Jim throughout his health struggles. Logan and Rex (sons of Courtney and Matthew Clark) lived for their “Pop.” Jim’s face would light up when he heard Logan, an avid reader, arrive at his apartment with a backpack filled with dinosaur books. Logan will also continue to have fond memories of “Pop” at Old Forge, NY, where Jim would take his family in the summer and enjoy go cart rides and of course, competitive miniature golf.

Jim was a “fighter.” For the past ten years he battled many health problems ranging from throat cancer to heart complications. He never complained and never gave up. He continued to dedicate his life to his family and let his passions drive his decisions. Jim was an inspiration to all who knew him and will continue to inspire those who were impacted by his love, intellect and passion. Pop will be forever missed, but remembered with the fondest of memories.

Surviving are 2 sons, Kyle (Stefanie) Burrell of Lexington, MA and Keith Burrell of Rochester, NY; 2 daughters, Courtney (Matthew) Clark of Wellsville, NY and Kelcie Cieslica of Webster, NY; 5 sisters, Peggy (Fred) Hemeon of Troy, NY, Jane (Mike) Boyer of Cincinnati OH, Carroll (Andy) Collins of West Newbury, MA, Patty Corle of Corning, NY; Cathy (Dave) Elliott of Mason, OH; 3 grandchildren, Addisyn Higgins, Logan Clark and Rex Clark; several nieces & nephews.

Frankie J. Dieter, JR – 35 – of 5559 Hillcrest Dr., Canisteo, formerly of Hornell, died unexpectedly Saturday (July 29, 2017) in Fresno, CA.

Born in Rochester, NY on September 23, 1981, he was the son of Frank Dieter of Hornell and Deborah MacWhorter of Danville.

Frankie grew up in Lima, NY and later lived in Dansville where he graduated from Dansville High School (class of 1999). While in high school, he was a member of the Dansville Mustang Football Team where he played the position of running back. He also was a member of the Dansville Mustang Wrestling Team where he excelled and advanced to the New York State Finals. Following his high school graduation, Frankie attended Alfred State College in the spring of 1999. He has resided in the Hornell – Canisteo area for most of his adult life.

He was employed as a carpenter and worked for the Local Union # 226 out of Rochester. In 2015 – 2016, Frankie returned to college and earned his Business Management Degree from Genesee Community College where he was on the Dean’s List for three semesters. In recent years, Frankie was employed at the H.J. Martin & Son Construction Company as a foreman, traveling throughout the United States for the company.

Frankie was a former member of the United Methodist Church of Dansville and had also attended the Adrian Baptist Church where his grandfather served as pastor.

He was an avid Buffalo Bills fan and especially admired Thurman Thomas. While in high school, Frankie actually wore #34 jersey in honor of his favorite Buffalo Bills player. He had a deep love and appreciation of music and loved singing, playing piano and playing base guitar. He would occasionally “sit in” with his buddies’ band and sing and play base. His many friends were extremely important to Frankie. He loved them all and considered them as “family.” He also enjoyed playing video games and had a deep affection for his seven beloved Siberian Huskies, Nanuk, Keyara, Aspen, Dieter, Nemaway, Caspain & Bella Blue.

Frankie was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Franklyn & Louise Dieter, his maternal grandfather, Rev. Abram Carter and his step-sister, Theresa MacWhorter.

Surviving are his longtime love & partner in life of 15 years, Barbara Freeland of Canisteo; his father, Frank (Paula) Dieter of North Hornell; his mother, Deborah (James) MacWhorter of Dansville; his sisters, Sandra (Kevin) Whitman of Dansville, Brandy Dieter of Hornell and Heather Dieter of Hornell; 3 step-brothers, Patrick (Chelsea Hughes of Perry, NY, Shawn Hughes of Indiana and Todd (Karen) MacWhorter of Perry; his maternal grandmother, Mary Lou Carter of Canisteo; his niece Cameron Caffarelli; his nephew, Ryder Whitman; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces & nephews.

Robert F. “Bob” Morgan – 72 – of 5204 County Route 8, Avoca, NY died Wednesday evening (July 26, 2017) at the Bath VA Medical Center Hospice Unite, following a long illness.

Born in Herkimer, NY on July 30, 1944, he was the son of Robert & Mary (Karpiak) Morgan.

Bob grew up in Lyons, NY and was a graduate of Lyons High School. He was a veteran of the US Air Force, serving his country during the Viet Nam era.

Throughout the years, Bob resided and worked at various places in the Rochester and Canandaigua areas and has lived in Avoca for the past 22 years. In recent years he was self-employed as a carpenter and “Jack of All Trades”.

Bob enjoyed rooting for the Buffalo Bills and in his younger years enjoyed hunting.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffery Morgan who died in 1998 and also his brother, Rex Morgan.

Bob was married on July 7, 2003 to the former Sharon (Bassett) Towner who survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Kimberly Morgan of Las Vegas, NV and Jennifer Pingrey of Silver Springs, NY; 1 brother, Rodney (Dee) Morgan; 3 step-children, William (Linda George) Towner of Dansville, Connie (David) Canfield of Dansville and Shawn (Jenna) Towner of Wayland; 6 grand-children; 3 step-grandchildren; several great-grand children and step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews.

Gladys L. (Clark) Louiz – 97 – of Addison, NY, died early Wednesday morning (July 26, 2017) at her home.

Born in Campbell, NY on October 15, 1919, she was the daughter of Charley & Carrie (Atwood) Gay.

Gladys grew up in Hormby, NY and was a graduate of Corning North Side High School (class of 1940).

She moved to Addison in 1941 and for about seven years served as a live-in helper & caregiver for a local family in Addison. In 1947 she began working for Singer Sewing Machine Company and for about 35 years served as a sales lady and also gave sewing lessons to customers. Gladys was later employed as a sales lady at JoAnn’s Fabrics at the Arnot Mall. She later was employed for five years as a seamstress at Halwigs in Corning and also at Cutler Carpet for over 20 years.

Gladys was a lifelong member of Addison Methodist Church where for many years she taught Sunday School. She also served as a member of the Church’s Board of Directors. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, gardening, playing cards (especially rummy) and was a member of the Corning VFW Auxiliary.

She was married in 1993 to John Louiz who died in 2003. She was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, Clifford Gay, Franklin Gay and Alvin Gay; 1 sister, Emily Draper; her grandson, Lemichael Clark; and also Joan Feasley.

Surviving are her son, Robert (Frances) Clark of Campbell; her daughter, Dawn Meeks of South Carolina; her grandchildren, Terri (Joe) Smith, Sharon (Gary) Mackley, Robert (Julie) Clark, James (Kristi) Clark, Jodi Clark, Jeremy (Rose) Clark, Rebecca (James) Kron, Jacob Meeks and Melissa (Jason) Mattison; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are Clara Bliss, Dorothy Howe, Linda Wilson and Karen (Steve) Easter.

At Gladys’ request there will be no calling hours. A Memorial Service will be celebrated at the Addison Methodist Church at a later date.

Colleen E. Harold – (36) – of Hornell passed on Monday, July 24, 2017 as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Born in Lewiston, NY, on April 24, 1981, she was the daughter of Jeffrey and Diane (Colucci) Harold.

Colleen grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1999).  She always had a strong interest in working in the medical field.  Colleen had pursued a nursing degree at Corning Community College and had obtained her CNA certification before deciding on a career in optometry.  She began working in the offices of Dr. Stephan Greenberg, MD and Dr. George Heinig, OD and had acquired her Optician’s License earlier this year.  Most recently, Colleen had been employed as an Optician in the Vision Center at the Horseheads Walmart.  For the past 14 years, Colleen was also a bartender at Jeff’s clubhouse in Hornell and very much enjoyed spending time there.

Colleen most enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.  She had a true zest for life and loved finding fun and adventurous activities to do with her children and was happiest when she was with them.  Colleen also enjoyed baking, cooking, and was an avid reader. 

Mary C. D’Agostino – (85) – formerly of 14 Sawyer St., Hornell, died Wednesday afternoon (July 19, 2017) at St. James Mercy Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

Born in Hornell on August 2, 1931, she was the daughter of Ellis & Thelma (Glover) Schrader.

Mary grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1950). Throughout the years she had been employed as a secretary at the former Grimes Insurance in Hornell and also at Hazel Fairbanks Insurance of Hornell. She had also worked as a sales clerk at the former Dunn’s Drug Store and Up To Date Fashions, both of Hornell.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.

Mary was a former member of the Ladies of Columbus; a life member of the Hornell VFW and a former member of the Hornell Moose Lodge. She was an avid reader and, in years past, enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

She was married on June 14, 1953 to Joseph J. D’Agostino who died August 3, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Schrader and her nephew, Kenneth “Skip” Schrader JR.

Surviving are her daughter, Mary “Rege” (Greg) Tsibulsky of Hornell; her son, Joseph A. (Lynn) D’Agostino of Hornell; 3 grandchildren, Nicholas (Sara) Tsibulsky, Libby Tsibulsky and Sam D’Agostino; 3 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

Carol J Sheflin (Hoffman), age 70, formerly of Canaseraga NY, passed away Thursday afternoon (July 13, 2017) surrounded by family following a courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

She was born in Hornell, NY on May 5, 1947, the daughter of the late Maxwell and Rose (Doll) Hoffman.

Carol was a 1965 graduate of Canaseraga Central School and an active member of the community for many years before moving to Virginia in 2008. In addition to raising her children at home she also worked with the Town of Burns Assessor’s office, Marion Rohr Corporation, Ames Department Store, Wayside Nursery, Forbes Products and was also a US Census Taker.

Carol’s passion was gardening and known by the community as the “go-to” for plant knowledge. She was active with the Cornell Cooperative Extension while in New York and a certified Master Gardener while in the state of Virginia. She loved sharing her passion for plants, flowers, and gardening with others and evidence of her generosity can be found in many states across the country.

A lifelong DIY (Do It Yourself) expert, Carol dabbled in everything from soap to home improvements and canning to furniture refinishing. She will also be remembered for her inventive spirit and great sense of humor.

Carol is survived by three children, Elizabeth (Jackson) Sieglinger of Ventura, CA, Virginia Sheflin of Buffalo, NY and Cliff Smith of Patrick Springs, VA; four siblings, Maxine (Frank) Downey of Holley, NY, Marie Hoffman (Bits Neary) of Naples, NY, Tom (Fran) Hoffman of Arkport NY, David Hoffman of Naples, NY and two beloved grandsons Elliot and Miles Sieglinger.

The family thanks everyone for their support, cards and kind words, over the past few months.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, (July 25^th, 2017) from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  Graveside services will be held at the family cemetery at 11:00 AM on Wednesday July 26^th.

An open luncheon/dinner to celebrate Carol’s life journey will be held at the Canaseraga American Legion at 83 W. Main Street, Canaseraga, NY immediately following the graveside service on Wednesday (July 26, 2017) at 1:00pm. All are welcome and invited.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to the Orleans County Hospice designated for their Memorial Garden in Carol’s name or to the Lustgarten Pancreatic Cancer Research Foundation.
