Carolyn M. Ahearn

Carolyn M. Ahearn – 85 – of 6460 County Rt. 15, (Knight Settlement Rd.) Bath, NY, died Monday afternoon (September 16, 2013) at her home, following a long illness.

Born in Perth Amboy, NJ on June 21, 1928, she was the daughter of Carson & Bertha (Trask) Doorley.

Carolyn grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1946).  For several years she was employed as an operator for New York Telephone Company and later as a sales clerk for Sears & Roebuck in Hornell.  For over 20 years she worked at SKF Industries in Hornell, retiring as a purchasing agent.

She was married on June 21, 1969 to Joseph Ahearn who survives.  Together they resided many years on the Big Creek Road in Hornell and have lived in the Bath area for the past 15 years.  For over 20 years they owned & operated a horse farm, raising riding horses and draft horses.

In her younger years, Carolyn enjoyed flying and actually obtained her private pilot’s license.  Throughout the years she continued her love of horses and enjoyed working in her flower garden.  She also was and avid reader and loved quilting.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her son, John Rixford; 2 brothers, Thomas Doorley and Joseph Doorley; 1 sister, Jean Kernan.

In addition to her husband, Joseph Ahearn, survivors include 5 sons, David (Pam) Rixford of Dallas, TX, Marc (Margie) Rixford of Howard, Joseph (Lisa) Ahearn, JR of Austin, TX, Dr. David (Minako) Ahearn of Atlanta, GA and Steven (Valerie) Ahearn of Charlotte, NC; 2 sisters, Betty Angell of Granville, MA and Alice (Bill) Hoffman of Elma, NY; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

The family of Carolyn M. Ahearn will receive friends on Saturday from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where a Memorial Service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 3:00 PM with Dr. David Ahearn officiating.

Carolyn’s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name be made to First Care Hospice (formerly Southern Tier Hospice), 11751 East Corning Rd., Corning, NY 14830.  Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.

    We are so sorry for the loss of Aunt Carolyn. What an incredibly strong, yet loving and gentle woman she was, always happy to see family and friends.
