Betty Lou Haywood – 52 – of 60483 State Route 415, (The Caboose), Avoca, NY, died unexpectedly early Thursday morning (October 20, 2022) at her home.

Born in Vineland, NJ on March 18, 1970, she was the daughter of William & Betty (Gandy) Haywood.

Betty grew up in Millville, NJ and attended Millville High School.  She later graduated from Arthur P. Shalick High School in Pittsgrove, NJ.  She resided in Vineland, NJ for about six years before moving to the Avoca area 2 weeks ago.

An avid sports fan, Betty enjoyed rooting for the Dallas Cowboys (NFL); the San Francisco Giants (MLB) and the Detroit Red Wings (NHL).  She also loved crafts, especially creating beautiful “Latch Hook” designs which she gave to family & friends.  Betty was an avid reader, owning many romance novels over the past several years.

Despite dealing with several health issues and disabilities, Betty always seemed to have a smile on her face and a bright outlook on life.  She will be sadly missed by everyone that had the pleasure of knowing her.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Haywood, Sr.

Surviving are her fiancé, Bob Maslinski of Avoca; her daughter, Amber (Mark) Woods of Essex Junction, VT; her mother, Betty Haywood of Millville, NJ; 2 brothers, Alfred “Al” (Theresa Rodgers) Gandy of Millville, NJ and William Haywood, Jr. of Port Norris, NJ; 3 grandchildren, Kaylee & Madelyn Woods and Scarlett DePalma-Stroud; 2 step-children from a previous marriage, Bob DePalma & Ashley DePalma; several nieces & nephews.

Dorothy A. “Dotty” Argay – (80) – of 14 Elm St., Canisteo, NY died Thursday evening (October 13, 2022) at St. James Hospital, following an extended illness.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on October 4, 1942, she was the daughter of Frank & Mildred (Murphy) Fogarty.

Dotty’s early years were spent in Brooklyn, NY and her grade-school years in Levittown, NY.  She lived in Lake Ronkonma, NY during her teen-age years and was a graduate of Sachem High School in Lake Ronkonma.  While living in Lake Ronkonma, she was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church.

She resided in Hornell for about three years before moving to Canisteo nearly 50 years ago.  She treasured living in Canisteo and considered it her “Little Piece of Paradise.”  For over 30 years, Dotty owned & operated Dot’s Day Care in Canisteo.  She genuinely adored children and influenced the lives of countless children and parents.  She also influenced the lives of young girls while serving as a Girl Scout Leader.

Dotty was a communicant of St. Joachim’s Church of Canisteo where she taught Religious Education and served on the parish council.  She was also a member of the St. Joachim Church Altar & Rosary Society and a member of the “cleaning crew.”

She had been a member of the Canisteo American Legion Auxiliary for 30 plus years where she served as an officer.  She was an avid reader and loved working in her flower garden.  She also enjoyed spending Friday evenings playing “Michigan Rummy” with her Friday Night Ladies Card Club.

Among all things, Dotty cherished the time that she spent with her husband & children camping, as well as spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren which brought her great joy & happiness.

She was married on December 9, 1972 to William S. “Bill” Argay who died May 22, 2018.   She was also preceded in death by her sister, Denise Fogarty; brother-in-law, Wayne Powers and her beloved canine companion, “Shotz.”

Surviving are her five children: Dianne (John) Heckel of Canisteo, Maureen Cone of Daytona Beach, FL, Sharon (Paul) Pacholski of Ocala, FL, Christopher (Rosanna) Argay of Canisteo and Jennifer (Rob) Larkin of Garnerville, NY; 12 grandchildren, Willie Rideout and girlfriend Nicole Foster, Kristen (Ed) LaFleur, Jonathon (Melanie) Crider,  Samantha (Pete) Lehman, Jeremy Crider, Michael Heckel and girlfriend Brittany Guie, T.J. (Cianna) Rideout, Lizzy Loop, Caden Argay,  Brianna Larkin, Robert Larkin, & Alyvia Argay; 10 great-grandchildren, Eddie LaFleur, Evan Rideout , Carter Lehman, Kendall LaFleur, Jayke Crider , Jocelyn Rideout , Lucas Lehman, Morgan Lehman, Grayson Rideout, and Xavier Rideout; 3 sisters, Ellen Powers of Hornell, Maureen (Ron) Palmer of Canisteo and Fran (Dana) Lemme of Mt. Dora FL; 1 brother, Frank (Cindy) Fogarty of Sorrento, FL; several nieces & nephews.

The family of Dorothy A. “Dotty” Argay will receive friends on Saturday from 12:00 Noon  –  2:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  A Memorial Service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 2:00 PM with Rev. Norma Roberts officiating.  Final interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo, NY.  Family & friends are also invited to attend a “Celebration of Life” to be held at the Canisteo Fire Hall (4:00 PM  –  6:00 PM) following the graveside service.

Gregory “Greg” Boyd – 70 – of the Lincoln Gardens Apartments, Hornell, died unexpectedly Wednesday (October 12, 2022) at his home.

Born in Washington, DC on September 2, 1952, he was the son of Robert & Viola (Ford) Boyd.

Greg grew up in Washington, DC where he attended high school.  He was a veteran of the US Army, serving his country during the Vietnam era.  He has resided in Hornell for the past 2 years.

In addition to his parent, he was preceded in death b his son, Gregory Boyd; his brother, Larry Boyd; 2 sisters, Gloria Holmes and Eleanor Holmes.

Surviving are 2 sons, Marvin Boyd and Leon Boyd; 2 brothers, William Boyd and Ronald Holmes; 2 sisters, Gail Holmes and Karen Holmes.

Shirley M. Campbell – 88 – formerly of Bath, NY, died early Tuesday morning (October 11, 2022) at Elderwood at Hornell Nursing Facility, where she had resided for the past 10 months.

Born in Bath on April 4, 1934, she was the daughter of Leo & Jesse Dobbins.

Shirley grew up in Bath and was a graduate of Haverling High School (class of 1952).  She was employed as a secretary at Steuben Rural Electric in Bath, retiring in 1997 after 30 years of service.

She enjoyed traveling throughout New York State and spending time working in her flower garden.

Surviving are her son, Michael Campbell of Phoenix, AX; her daughter, Patricia Faulkner of Rimrock, AZ; her sister, Lorraine Hafleigh of Raleigh, NC.

Robert F. “Bob” Giles – 71 – of Gibbs St., Rochester, died early Saturday morning (October 8, 2022) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a long illness.

Born in Rochester on December 6, 1950, he was the son of Richard & Katherine (Bay) Giles.

Bob grew up in Rochester and was a graduate of St. Bernard’s Seminary High School (class of 1968).  He later attended St. John Fisher College.

In his younger years, Bob was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church where he served as an Altar Boy and later played guitar in the Church Folk Group.  A self-proclaimed “Hippie,” he enjoyed listening to Folk Rock, Jazz, and R&B music.  He also enjoyed rooting for the Raiders (NFL).

He retired as a claims adjuster for the New York State Insurance Fund of Rochester.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard & Katherine Giles.

Survived by his aunt, Olga Brutsman of Andover; several cousins; along with many friends.  He will also be sadly missed by his “2^nd Family” at Salinger’s Tavern.

A “Celebration of Life” will be held at Salinger’s, 107 East Ave., Rochester, NY on Sunday October 23 at 4:00 PM.

Donald J. “Don” Rechichi – 52 – of Blaine St., Hornell, died unexpectedly Thursday afternoon (October 6, 2022) at his home.

Born in North Hornell on May 22, 1970, he was the son of John & Julia “Judy” (Padden) Rechichi.

Don grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1989).  He had been employed in the kitchen/cafeteria at the former St. James Mercy Hospital and later served as a “prep-cook” at Country Kitchen Restaurant in Hornell.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  Don had also been a member of the Hornell Association.

In his younger years, Don enjoyed bowling and was a member of several bowling leagues.  He had been a hunter who enjoyed hunting deer & small game.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Julia Rechichi along with several aunts & uncles.

Surviving are his brother, David (Yvette) Rechichi of West Seneca, NY; 1 nephew, Michael Rechichi; 1 niece, Rachel Rechichi; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces & nephews.

Rose Anna McCormick – 71 – of Hornell, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, September 28, 2022.

Born in Fort Ticonderoga, NY on October 29, 1950, she was the daughter of Morgan & Helen (Carpenter) Belden and was raised by her grandmother, Esther Belden.

Rose had a way of capturing every special moment with her family and friends.  She was selfless and this was evident throughout her long career as a nurse and her most cherished job of being Nana to her seven beloved grandchildren.  Rose found greatest joy when surrounded by her grandkids.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister.  Rose was a dedicated advocate for Relay for Life and was proud to walk in the Wilmot Cancer walk and to raise funds to find a cure for cancer.

On December 29, 1970, Rose was married to Deacon Bob McCormick who survives.  Also surviving are 3 daughters, Tara (Robert) Pienkowski of Syracuse, Erin (Terrence) Sloan of Selkirk, NY and Nicole (Matthew) Einhorn of Selkirk, NY; 7 grandchildren, Mia Pienkowski, Carissa Pienkowski, Aiden Sloan, Bryson Sloan, Kaleb Sloan, Cameron Einhorn and Avery Einhorn.

The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to all of the health care providers that helped Rose throughout her illness; especially, the staff from Care First Hospice that were with her in her final days at home.  So many wonderful nurses cared for her that we cannot list all of them individually.  Also, thank you to Dr. Picco and Dr. Sharda and their medical staff for the countless hours and devoted medical care provided.

At Rose’s request there will be no prior calling hours.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 3, 2022 at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church, Hornell, NY. A reception will follow at The Main Place, 215 Main St., Hornell, NY.

Fred F. “Ted” Ames, Jr., 85, of Bath, NY died early Thursday morning (September 22, 2022) at St. James Hospital.

Born in Bar Harbor, ME on January 28, 1937, he was the eldest son of Fred and Florence (Harriman) Ames (deceased).

He graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1955, then attended the University of Maine, Orono, and graduated in 1959 with a degree in Civil Engineering.  Fred began a career as a civil engineer with the New York State Department of Transportation, Hornell Regional Office.  He retired in 1997 as the Regional Director of Transportation Operations.

Fred enjoyed photography and, at the age of 18, held the honor of being the youngest licensed movie projectionist in the State of Maine.  He was a member of the Bath Elks Lodge and volunteered with the Canaseraga ambulance.  Fred enjoyed flying, earning his Private Pilot License.  Fred was a lifetime member of the Penn Yan Flying Club and a member of the Civil Air Patrol.  He was a Buffalo Bills Football fan and avid golfer.  He enjoyed target shooting as a member of the Bath Rod & Gun Club. In retirement, Fred learned to play the violin and piano.  Several times a year he enjoyed traveling to Maine to visit family and friends, and to attend the annual Bar Harbor High School reunion.

Fred was married to Lynne M. Montgomery from 1961-1975.  In 1979, he married Dorothy Gemmell Ames, who died in 2016.

He is survived by his daughters, Patricia Ames of Rochester, NY, and Nadine Ames Rosenblum (Micah) of Towson, MD; his step-children, John Gemmell (Karen), Timothy Gemmell (Gail), Cynthia Stackpole (Robert), Linda Gemmell and Nancy Langton; his brother, Robert Ames (Judy) of Annapolis, MD; his sister, Dorothy “Dottie” Robins of Bar Harbor, ME; grandchildren, Harrison Rosenblum and Artemis Rosenblum; several step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, class-mates, and friends.  Fred will also be sadly missed by his dear friend and companion, Aileen Mahoney, and her family.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Peter Ames, his stepson, William Gemmell, and his step-granddaughter, Brittni Gemmell.

The family of Fred F. Ames, Jr. will receive friends on Saturday, (Oct. 1^st, 2022) from 12:00 PM  –  2:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY with a brief service to follow at 2:00 PM.  Final interment will be in Ledgelawn Cemetery in Bar Harbor, ME.  Information about the grave-side ceremony and reception in Maine will be available in the future.

Kevin M. “Kayla” Brown – 62 – of 135 Water St., Bath, NY, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon (September 19, 2022) at his home.

Born in Olean, NY on May 13, 1960, he was the son of Milton & Virginia (Page) Brown.

Kevin grew up in Olean and was a graduate of Olean High School (class of 1978).  He had been employed in the housekeeping department of the former Castle Inn and had resided in the Hornell – Bath area for the past 10 years. He was an avid Buffalo Bills football fan and enjoyed reading mystery novels.

In addition to his parents, Kevin was preceded in death by his half-brother, Frank Anastasia.

Surviving are his sister, Gail Goodridge of Erie, PA; 2 half-brothers, Anthony Anastasia and Robert Anastasia; his aunt, Olive Clark; several nieces & nephews.

Sheila Ann Dwight – 57 – of 7696 Ricks Road, Hornell (Town of Fremont), died Friday morning (September 16, 2022) at her home, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on August 15, 1965, she was the daughter of Betty (Young) Shorts.

Sheila grew up in the Canisteo area and attended Canisteo Central School.  She was a veteran of the US Army National Guard, serving her country from 1982 – 1983.

Following her honorable discharge from the National Guard, Sheila briefly worked as a seamstress & sorter at the former Marion Rohr Corporation.  For several years she was a “Stay At Home Mom,” raising her children and taking care of her family.  For over 20 years, Sheila was employed at the Hornell High School Cafeteria, serving as a cook, server and eventually as kitchen manager.  She retired about four years ago due to ill health.

Sheila had a deep love of animals and for many years raised cows, chickens and pigs.  She also had a deep affection for her many border collies that she owned throughout the years.  Along with her husband, Kurt, she enjoyed rooting for the New York Yankees (MLB) and the Buffalo Bills (NFL).

As a young girl, Sheila’s family spent time on Loucks Pond in Avoca where she developed a love of the outdoors and fishing.  Throughout the years, she continued her love of fishing — especially on the Dwight Family Pond in Fremont.

She was married on May 12, 1984 to Kurt Dwight who survives.  Also surviving are 2 children, Nicole (Joe) Harris of Hornell and Justin (Mandi) Dwight of Sykesville, MD; 1 sister, Dawn (Glen) Burritt of Canisteo; 6 grandchildren, Aeriana Bourgeois, Derrick Harris, Lincoln Harris, Collin Wheaton, Raiden Dwight and Savannah Dwight; several nieces & nephews.
