Maureen M. Galatio – 89 – formerly of Belle Haven Road, Hornell, passed away Sunday morning (June 28, 2020) in Wellsville, NY.

Born in Hornell on February 13, 1931, she was the daughter of William and Regina (Lynch) Tobin.

Growing up in Hornell, Maureen was a graduate of St. Ann’s School (class of 1944) and Hornell High School (class of 1948).  Following high school, she began her employment at the Erie Railroad.

She was married on June 16, 1956 at St. Ignatius Loyola Church to Stephen J. Galatio who died on October 20, 2001.  She was also preceded in death by her brother, Jack, who died in 2010.

She was employed at St. James Mercy Hospital from 1968 – 1980 as an occupational therapist and from 1980 – 1993 served as the Director of Activities & Volunteers at the Steuben County Infirmary.  As an active community volunteer she also served as ombudsman at local nursing homes and volunteered her time at RSVP; American Red Cross;St. James Hospital Gift Shop; St. James Auxiliary; the Ladies of Columbus and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Maureen was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and had been a communicant of both St. Ignatius Loyola Church and St. Ann’s Church and throughout the years, served as a Eucharistic Minister at both churches.

Maureen’s motto and the words that she lived by were “Faith, Family and Friends”.  She prayed the rosary every day and was proud of her Irish heritage.  Her home was the family meeting place for all holidays and special occasions.  Maureen cherished her friendships with her YMCA “swim buddies” and exercise classmates along with her card club.  She loved to attend the sporting events of her sons and grandchildren through elementary school, high school, college and Gus Macker tournaments.

Surviving are three sons, Joseph (Joyce) Galatio of Greece, NY, Daniel (Lisa) Galatio of Hornell and James (Kylie McLaughlin) of Cuba, NY; 1 granddaughter, Keri Galatio; 4 grandsons, Stephen, Shane, Tom & Jack Galatio; her brother, Tom (Gail) Tobin of Spencerport, NY; her sister-in-law, Shirley Tobin of Sneads Ferry, NC; several nieces, nephews & cousins.

There will be no public calling hours.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church.  Please follow all COVID-19 precautions at the church, including wearing a mask and social physical distancing.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Jane S. Cartella – 92 – of Eustis, Florida, formerly of Hornell and Arkport, passed away at her home Wednesday, June 24, 2020.

She was born in Hornell February 20, 1928, the daughter of Carl Seaman and Wanda (Johnson) Seaman and was a 1945 graduate of Hornell High School.

On August 11, 1949 at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell, she married Joseph John Cartella, who died November 15, 2007.

Jane was employed as an operator for New York Telephone in Hornell and Olean, retiring in 1982 with over 32 years with the company.  Following her retirement, she worked part-time in the kitchen at The Sunset Inn in Hornell.  For many years, Jane and her husband spent winters in Eustis and summers at their home near South Dansville.  She became a year-round Florida resident in 2008.

She was a member of St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church in Eustis, and a former member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell.  Jane will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, a thoughtful friend, and a fan of classic film noir; one favorite was the 1944 film Laura.  A fine cook, she kept her family well fed, specializing in delicious pies and other desserts.

Jane had a great love for the City of Hornell and many fond memories of it, last visiting in 2017 when she attended the annual Hornell High School Alumni banquet.  Jane was a generous donor to the alumni scholarship fund.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Joseph Cartella, Jr., in 2003, and a brother, Mark Seaman in 1987.

She is survived by three sons, John Cartella of Hornell, Peter (Leila) Cartella of Dansville, James (Shannon) Cartella of Mount Dora, Florida; a brother, Brian (Vicki) Seaman of Elmira; 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Sara A. “Sally” Roselli – 80 – of 204 Main St., Hornell, died Monday morning (June 22, 2020) at her home, following a long illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, she was born May 17, 1940 and was the daughter of Donald & Geraldine (Allen) Harris.

Sally was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1958) and later received her Registered Nurse’s License from St. James School of Nursing (class of 1961).  From 1961-1965 she served as a registered nurse at the former Harris Nursing Home in Hornell which was owned & operated by her mother.  Sally was also employed as a Private Duty Nurse in the Hornell area for several years.

She had been a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Hornell and was a talented artist, having several beautiful paintings to her credit.  She also had a deep affection for animals and truly loved her pet cat & bird.

Sally was preceded in death by her son, John J. Roselli (died December 12, 2019); her granddaughter, Angelina Eicher; her former husband, Arthur “Art” Roselli; 1 brother, Joseph Harris; 1 sister, Helen Grissom.

Surviving are 3 daughters, Karen (John) Dagon of Hornell, Kathy (Joe Ebert) Roselli of Almond and Anne Rovito of Harpswell, ME; 1 granddaughter, Tagan Rovito;  3 grandsons, John, Jimmy and Sam Dagon; her great-grandson, Cadian Buck; 1 brother, Frederic Harris of Arkport; several nieces & nephews.

Dennis A. Dlugolecki – 64 – of 451 Bishopville Road Ext., Arkport, NY (Town of Almond) died unexpectedly Monday morning at his home just shy of his 65^th birthday.

Born in Goshen, NY on June 29, 1955, he was the son of Polish Immigrants Teslav “Chester” & Catherine (Shults) Dlugolecki.

Dennis grew up in Orange County, NY and attended Goshen High School (class of 1974) where he excelled in soccer and was named to the all-county team. Following graduation, Dennis worked at the local Ford Motor Plant before starting a career with the NYS Department of Corrections at the Sing Sing Correctional Facility. “Doogie” would later transfer to the Groveland Correctional Facility and retire after 25 years.

In 1990, the family relocated to Hornell, NY where they resided on Heather Heights and Elm Street before moving to Bishopville in Arkport. During his time in Upstate, NY he co-founded two area real estate businesses with his wife Pam, and good friend, Roy Forshee. Growing from a single property on Bennett St. in Hornell, the companies blossomed to tens of properties spread throughout the Southern Tier. As an advocate of the Wounded Warrior Project, Dennis always worked to provide adequate housing arrangements for veterans and their families.

Dennis loved making people laugh, discussing world events, playing with his grandson, Declan, and watching Yankees baseball. He coached youth soccer and Hornell Little League and supported many area organizations including the Hornell Alumni Association and the Humane Society. Dennis was also a member of the Hornell Association and a past officer of the Elks Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother & sister-in-law, Leonard & Thereasa Dlugolecki; and his niece, Joanne (Dlugolecki) Space.

Dennis was married 35 years to the former Pamela Nickerson Dlugolecki, who survives. Also, surviving are his daughter, Rachael (Ruadhri McCormick) Dlugolecki of Seattle, WA; his son, Tyler Dlugolecki of San Diego, CA; his grandson, Declan McCormick; his mother-in-law, Sylvia (Byron) Leonard; his father-in-law, Bill (Pam) Nickerson; two sister-in-laws, Tamera Donovan (Don Jackson), and Ginger Montgomery; two brother-in-laws, William (Johnna) Nickerson and Shane (Jill) Nickerson; and several cousins, nieces & nephews.

The family of Dennis A. Dlugolecki will receive friends on Friday from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic restrictions, only 25 people at a time will be admitted into the funeral home and everyone is required to wear a mask.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where everyone will be required to wear a mask.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont. A Celebration of life will immediately follow at the Main Place in Hornell at 1:00 PM.

Martha E. “Marti” Kratts – 82 – formerly of Hornell, died Thursday evening (June 18, 2020) at the home of her daughter in Leicester, NY following a long illness.

Born in Philadelphia, PA on July 5, 1937, she was the daughter of Joseph & Mabel (Henderson) HerrNeckar.

Marti grew up in Upper Darby, PA, moving to Dalton, NY in 1950.   She was a graduate of Nunda Central School (class of 1955).  She resided in the Tonawanda, NY area for many years and had been employed in the Fabric Department of K-Mart Department Store.  In 1970 she returned to Dalton, NY where she worked as a bookkeeper for the Baker Feed Mill.

Moving to Hornell in the early 1980’s, Marti had been a long-time member of the Christ Episcopal Church. She enjoyed sewing & crocheting and throughout the years created many afgans and also made clothing for her family, especially her grandchildren.  She also loved spending time working in her flower garden.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Florence Baker and also her niece, Cindy Turo.

Surviving are 4 sons, Scott (Nancy) Kratts of Plattsburg, NY, Lonnie (Bonnie) Kratts of Dalton, NY, Gary (Eva) Kratts of Knoxville, TN and Kevin Tully of Chicago, IL; 1 daughter, Wendy (Michael) Mallaber of Leicester, NY; 1 brother, Edwin (Anne) HerrNeckar of Salt Lake City, UT; 10 Grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

Lawrence McRae “Larry”, AKA “Baba” Carroll – 74 – of 22 Fulton St., Hornell, died peacefully Wednesday morning (June 3, 2020) at his home surrounded by his loving family, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on June 20, 1945, he was the son of the late Edward Markham & Genevieve (McRae) Carroll.

Larry grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1964).  He was an active member of his high school reunion committee and spent countless hours volunteering his time to ensure each event was a success. He was a loving and wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.  Larry was one of the most caring individuals you could ever have come across and was that guy that would call you up to tell you a funny story just to make you laugh and to see what was going on in your life.

He was a veteran of the US Army, serving his country from 1967-1969 and had been stationed in Korea.

Following his honorable discharge from the US Army, Larry returned to the Hornell area and for 10 years was employed as a machinist & crane operator for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, Conrail and GE.  He later served as a machinist & crane operator for Morrison-Knudsen Corporation.

After his machinist days, he had been employed in the custodial departments of St. James Mercy Hospital, Bath VA Hospital and Hornell City School District.

Larry was a devout Catholic and member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  He was also a member and past Commander of the Hornell American Legion and a member of the Hornell Elks Lodge.

An avid golfer, Larry had been a long-time member of the Hornell Golf Club (formerly Hornell Country Club).  He was a sports’ enthusiast and enjoyed watching sporting events on TV. He especially loved rooting for the Miami Dolphins and the New York Yankees.  He not only supported his own children in their sporting events growing up, yet was a strong supporter and cheerleader for the Hornell High School sporting teams. His happiest moments, however, were simply spending time with and enjoying his family, especially his grandchildren who were truly the “Apple of His Eye.”

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Ann Nagle and sister-in-law Saskia Carroll.

He was married on June 10, 1972 to the former Debra “Debbie” Bell, the love of his life, who survives.  Also surviving are his loving daughter, Heather Carroll of Bristow, VA; his loving son, Scott (Maureen) Carroll of Hornell; his brother, Richard Carroll of Puerto Rico; 3 very special grandchildren, Brennan Michael Carroll, Owen Patrick Carroll and Margaret Grace Carroll; along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.  He had been blessed by the gift of friendship by two sets of very dear close friends, James and Arlene Tobin and James and Julie Tobin who always stood by him and supported him no matter what was asked of them.

Craig D. Neu SR – 47 – of 2810 Gravel Run Road, Canisteo, died unexpectedly early Sunday morning (June 7, 2020) at his home.

Born in Hornell on February 3, 1973, he was the son of Daniel & Dona (Martin) Neu and the step-son of Veronica “Ronnie” Neu.

Craig resided in Hornell during his early years and, because his father was a member of the US Air Force, lived in many locations during his teen years, such as California, Massachusetts and North Carolina.  He returned to the Hornell-Canisteo area in 1992.

Throughout his life, Craig enjoyed fishing and watching football & basketball on TV, always rooting for the San Francisco 49ers and the LA Lakers.  In his younger years he loved playing basketball.

Surviving are 5 children, Brenden (Summer) Cammilleri, Craig Neu JR, Khristian Neu, Heavena Neu and Mystyca Neu; 1 granddaughter, Giavanna Cammilleri; his father & step-mother, Dan & Veronica “Ronnie” Neu of Hornell; his mother, Donna Mulhair of Canisteo; 1 sister, Ryan Elizabeth Neu; 3 brothers, Richard Neu, Zane Swarts and Joseph Pulvino; several aunts, uncles & cousins.

Irene M. Mauro, 90, formerly of Pine Street in Hornell and for the last several years, a resident of Updyke’s Willow Ridge, died Thursday, June 4, 2020 following a lengthy illness.

Born in Troupsburg, NY on February 12, 1930, she was the daughter of Joseph & Hazel (Paul) Moore.

Irene grew up in the Hornell – Canisteo area and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1947).  She had been employed for several years as a telephone operator for the former New York Telephone Company.

When her children were younger, Irene spent many busy years as a Cub Scout Den Leader, Homeroom Mother for classes at Lincoln School, Blue Bird and Camp Fire Leader, religious education teacher, and was also active in the Lincoln School PTA.

In later years, Irene babysat the children of several teachers at Lincoln School and then babysat her own grandchildren for several years.

Irene was a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother, attending countless concerts, recitals, plays, and sporting events over the years.  She loved to bake and cook for her family, especially apple pies and raviolis. She also enjoyed reading, crocheting and gardening.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and for many years had been a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church, where she served as sacristan and was active in the operation & maintenance of the Church. More recently, she was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. Irene also made and donated countless rosaries to Father Bill Brown for his missions in Peru.

Irene had been a member of the Rosary and Altar Society of St. Ignatius Church, Catholic Daughters of America and the Ladies of Columbus.  Throughout the years, she also enjoyed playing cards with her friends.  Irene loved spending her summer months with her family at their cottage on Waneta Lake.

She will be fondly remembered as a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be sadly missed and forever loved by those whose lives she touched.

She was married on October 16, 1948 to Salvatore “Tootie” Mauro who died February 26, 2008.  She was also preceded in death by her parents; her step father, James Soble; her sister, Barbara Kelly; her brother, James Soble, Jr.; brothers-in-law Dale Lamphier and Carl Mauro; and sisters-in-law Jean Mauro, Anne Mauro and Marguerite Mauro.

Surviving are 3 sons; Thomas (Ann) Mauro of Cohocton, Ronald (Suzanne) Mauro of Almond and Robert (Pauline Shaw) Mauro of Arkport; 1 daughter, Teresa (Andy) Williams of Hornell; 1 sister, Genevieve Lamphier of Canisteo; 9 grandchildren, Angela (David) Trautman, Michael (Jenn Fish) Mauro, Raymond (Shelby Hosmer) Mauro, Dr. John (Yihong) Mauro, Daniel (Dr. Vivian Shaw) Mauro, Dr. Marisa (Charley Howe) Mauro, Nicholas (Jerry Walsh) Mauro, Meghann Williams and Kristen Williams; 8 great-grandchildren: Joseph Trautman, Nathaniel Trautman, Baylie Mauro, Bentley Mauro, Sofia Mauro, Rhys Howe, Rhett Howe, Torin Howe; and several nieces & nephews.

Irene’s family would like to thank all of the staff at Updyke’s Willow Ridge who took such great care of her and treated her like family during her time there.  They would also like to thank the staff of Care First for their loving care over the last several months.

Lawrence M. “Larry” Carroll – 74 – of 22 Fulton St., Hornell, died Wednesday morning (June 3, 2020) at his home, following a long illness.

Nancy Jane Drake – 70 – of Hornell, NY, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2020 at Hornell Gardens Nursing Home, due to complications from COVID-19.

Nancy was born in Arkport, NY on August 8, 1949, the daughter of  Franklin and Joy (Wilson) Haynes. She attended school and graduated from Arkport Central High School. She later in life went on to attend college at Alfred State College, for computer and office management training.

Soon after high school Nancy married Paul Fisk and was later married to Richard “Doug” Drake (deceased).  She lived most of her life in the Hornell area except for a few years when she lived in Buffalo, NY after attending college. She worked for many years as a waitress and bartender in local Hornell area establishments such as the Big Elms, Sunset Inn, Muhleisen’s and Lucy’s Tavern.

Nancy was an avid fisherwoman and loved being outdoors and around a good campfire. She was quick to laugh and was known for her fun-loving personality and for her feistiness in her later years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Franklin and Joy Haynes.

Nancy is survived by daughter Kimberly Fisk (Larry Humphreys) of Tampa, FL, son Jody and Jennifer (Cook) Fisk of Honeoye, NY, daughter Corianne Covert (Freeman Covert) of Folsom, CA, and her grandchildren Michael, Glen, Autumn, Melinda, Kyla and Hunter. Nancy also has two surviving brothers Bill (Janice) Haynes and Alan Haynes.
