Angela Wheeler-Caldwell

Angela “Angie” Wheeler-Caldwell – 78 – of 9 East Ave., Arkport, died Tuesday afternoon (November 30, 2010) at St. James Mercy Hospital following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on December 24, 1931, she was the daughter of Nicholas & Mamie (Vegard) Sciotti.

Angie spent her early years in Hornell and was a graduate of St. Ann’s School.  Her family moved to Arkport during her teenage years and she was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class of 1949).

While in high school, Angie worked at the Arkport Inn, a local restaurant owned & operated by her parents.  She was also employed at the former Argentieri’s Meat Market.  During the construction of Route 17, she was employed as an accounting clerk for several of the construction companies, including Brown Engineers, S.J. Groves & Sons and Cold Spring Construction.

Angie resided in Dallas, TX for about 5 years where she was employed in the accounting department of IBM Corporation.  She transferred to Rochester, NY and continued working for IBM for about 6 more years.  She retired in the late 1990’s.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church where she volunteered her time cleaning the church.  She was a member of the Carducci Lodge (Sons of Italy) and an active member of the Beato Angelo Society.  After a 30 year hiatus, Angie re-organized the Beato Angelo Society and was instrumental in the organization of a pilgrimage to Furci, Italy — the “Sister City” of the Beato Angelo Society.

It would be an understatement to say that Angie was very active in Republican politics.  She was a member and past president of the Republican Woman’s Club and served many years as Councilwoman for the Town of Hornellsville.  Angie served as Headquarter Chairman in Hornell for the George W. Bush Presidential Election Campaign and was a past recipient of Steuben County Republican of the Year Award.

Although Angie had many interests, including being an avid New York Yankee fan, her true joy in life was her commitment to her family — especially her grandchildren and great granddaughter.  She will be sadly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

She was married on March 31, 1951 to Ernie Wheeler who died in 1979.  She later married Bill Caldwell who died in 2001.  She was also preceded in death by 2 daughters, Patricia Wheeler who died in 1952 and Barbara Wheeler who died in 1979; 1 brother, Nicholas Sciotti, JR who died in 1981.

Surviving are her daughter, Christine (Thomas) Lee of Arkport; her son, Ernie (Karen) Wheeler, JR of Farmington, NY; 2 sisters, Ann Marie (Toddy) Whitman of Arkport and Lucy (Robert) Alger of Arkport; 5 grandchildren, Michael Lee, Connor Lee, Jennifer Wheeler-Gathman, Courtney Wheeler and Steven Wheeler; 2 step-sons, Robert Caldwell and John Caldwell; son-in-law, Mark (Lorraine) Schneider; 2 sisters-in-law, Lois Sciotti and Jean Weirick; several nieces, nephews & cousins.

The family of Angela “Angie” Wheeler–Caldwell will receive friends on Friday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday at St. Ann’s Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Angie’s family request that memorial contributions in her name be made to either St. Jude Children’s Hospital, PO Box 1000, Department 300, Memphis, TN 38148 or Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 East Corning Road, Corning, NY 14830 or Faith in Action, 20 Broadway Mall, Hornell, NY 14843.  Memorial envelopes will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.
