Darryl J. “Hollywood” Conley – 58 – of 23 ½ Main St., Hornell, died Tuesday afternoon (July 18, 2023) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester where he had been taken after being stricken in Hornell.

Born in Bath, NY on December 15, 1964, he was the son of Clarence & Andrea (Malion) Conley.

Darryl grew up in Florida and attended Van Guard High School in Ocala, FL. He later briefly served his country as a member of the US Army National Guard.

Throughout the years, Darryl lived in several locations, including Florida, Oklahoma, Arizona, Scio, NY, Wellsville, NY and has resided in the Hornell area for the past 10 years. He had been employed for a time at ACES Cleaning in Hornell, serving both business & residential properties. For the past several years he was employed at Lowes of Hornell and had worked in the Lumber Department, Appliance Department and more recently in the Lawn & Garden Department.

Darryl was an avid bicyclist who enjoyed taking long, long bike rides throughout the countryside. He enjoyed visiting casinos and was known to “Make a Wager or Two.” He was an avid Miami Dolphin (NFL) fan and a New York Yankee fan (MLB). Darryl also loved taking long car rides and enjoying the beauty of nature. He was also a self-proclaimed “Home-Body” who loved simply watching TV and playing with his loving dog, “ABBEE.”

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy; his father, Clarence; his nephew, Liam Conley; along with several aunts & uncles.

Surviving are his longtime companion, Tammy Brackett; his daughters, Karilynn Lubin & Staci Lubin; “step-children,” Patricia Brackett, Danielle Zuppinger and Brian Merry; his mother, Andrea (Ron) Benedict of Hornell; 3 sisters, Janice (Dave Thompson) Towner of Greenwood, Jackie (Frank) Bizzotto-Conley of Chicago, IL and Adriane (Bob) Ackerman of Palm Coast, FL; 2 brothers, David (Linda) Conley of Ocala, FL and Dwayne (Barbra) Conley of LaGrange, GA; several grandchildren & “step-grandchildren” along with several other relatives.

At Darryl’s request there will be no calling hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family with final interment in Nights Creek Church Cemetery, Scio, NY

Alfred, New York

Robert Dwight “Bob” Reynolds, Jr. passed away on July 1, 2023.

He was born on Governors’ Island, New York, on August 2, 1944, the son of Robert Dwight Reynolds and Louise Persina Reynolds.

Bob was a long-time resident of Columbia, Maryland. He received his PhD from the University of South Columbia in American History in 1974 and later obtained a Masters’ Degree in Library Science and Archival Studies from the University of Maryland in 1989. Early in his career, he taught Advanced Placement American History at the Park School in Baltimore, Maryland.

He was an historian and an archivist for the AFL-CIO, and he was Editor of their magazine, “Labor Heritage”. He served as a faculty member of the George Meany Center for Labor Studies-the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Bob was a long-time member and participant in the International Association of Labor History Institutions (IALHI). He organized their United States conference in Washington, D.C., and attended yearly world-wide sessions of the organization. His PhD thesis, “The Millionaire Socialists: J.G. Phelps Stokes and His Circle of Friends”, is often referenced in historical articles.

He was an avid tennis player and volleyball player. Bob truly loved books, amassing a collection of over 4000 books and articles on American history and politics, baseball, mystery and other genres.

Surviving are his sister, Virginia Reynolds Vogel; and his brother, Frederic W. Reynolds; along with five nieces & nephews; nine grand-nieces & grand-nephews.

At Bob’s request there will be no calling hours. A private graveside service will be held at Alfred-Rural Cemetery at the convenience of the family with his brother, Fred Reynolds officiating.

Arkport, NY / Hornell, NY

Sandra Jean “Sandy” Lawrence – 81 – formerly of Arkport, died Saturday morning (July 15, 2023) at Elderwood at Hornell Nursing Facility in North Hornell, where she had resided for the past 3 years.

Born in North Hornell on June 11, 1942, she was the daughter of Arnold & Kathryn (Kimbel) Lawrence.

Sandy grew up in Arkport and was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class of 1960). She later earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Geneseo State College (SUNY Geneseo). For about 3 years Sandy served as a School Teacher at Arkport Central School.

To say that “Horses Were in Her Blood” would be an understatement. Not only did she own many horses herself, but Sandy also operated a “horse boarding” business on Oak Hill Road in Arkport where she boarded & tended to horses that were owned by area residents.

Moving to Hamburg, PA in the early 80s, she continued boarding and caring for horses and would sometimes have over 40 horses in her care at a time. Sandy eventually moved to York, NY in 1992 and worked alongside her nephew, Steve Hoyt, on his farm.

Throughout the years, Sandy gave horse-riding lessons to both children & adults and taught the art of “Barrel Racing.” For many years, she served as a “Horse-Farrier” and was a specialist in equine hoof care. She took great pride in trimming and balancing of horses’ hooves and making & placing of horseshoes when needed. She also took great joy in rescuing sick and abandoned horses, giving them another chance to live a great life.

Returning to the Arkport area about 26 years ago, Sandy enjoyed having a beer or two with her many friends at the Arkport American Legion. She was also a self-proclaimed “People Watcher” and loved driving or walking around the Arkport area simply watching the farmers working their fields.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Phyllis Hoyt and Madelyn “Madge” Lang: 2 brothers, Herman “Don” Lawrence and Shelton “Punky” Lawrence.

Surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces & great-nephews, including her great-niece and caregiver, Tracie McCarthy of Arkport. She will also be sadly missed by her lifelong friends, Lynn Blades and Penny Bennet

At Sandy’s request there will be no calling hours. A “Celebration of Life” will be held on August 20, 2023, at 2pm at the Arkport American Legion. Final interment will be in Heritage Hill Cemetery, Arkport, NY.

Sayre, PA / Hornell, NY

Daniel J. “Danny” Walsh – 72 – of Sayre, PA, died early Thursday morning (July 13, 2023) at the Vincent House in Wayland, NY, following a long illness.

Born in Scranton, PA on August 8, 1950, he was the son of the late Daniel and Louise (O’Brien) Walsh.

Growing up in Selinsgrove, PA, Danny resided at Selinsgrove Center where he learned daily life & social skills and vocational training. He resided in Sayre, PA for most of his adult life, proudly living independently and working various jobs in restaurants through Penn-York Opportunities, an organization that creates opportunities for community integration, learning, and employment to people with disabilities.

Although he was legally blind, Danny was a talented artist and enjoyed drawing. He also enjoyed riding his bicycle around town and collecting cans. Danny’s knowledge of trains was second to none, and he had an impressive Lionel Trains collection. He also had an amazing photographic memory. Danny never forgot anything! He could recall an event from any date in history, and he certainly would never forget a word anyone in his family ever said. No one would dispute his recollection of a conversation – ever!

In addition to his parents, Danny was preceded in death by his sister, Kathleen Walsh; three brothers-in-law, Jack Emo, Dale Baker, & Roy Thomson.

His loving family includes six sisters, Mary Ann Emo of Cocoa, FL, Margaret Baker of Trenton, FL, Roseleen (Dale) Butler of Trenton, FL, Patricia Thomson of Clarence, NY, Eileen Walsh of Arkport, & Maureen Walsh of Arkport; five brothers, James (Patty) Walsh of North Pole, AK, Patrick (Lita) Walsh of Greenville, SC, Michael Walsh of Oak Ridge, TN, John (Diane) Walsh of Hornell, & Barry (Margaret) Walsh of Louisville, TN; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, & great nephews.

At Danny’s request there will be no prior calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday (July 15, 2023) at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church, 27 Erie Ave., Hornell with Father Stan Kacprzak officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fremont.

Susan S. Lockwood (68) of Heather Heights, North Hornell, passed away May 19, 2023 at St. James Hospital, following a courageous 5 year battle with stage IV brain cancer, surrounded by her loving family.

A “Celebration of Life” will be held on Friday, July 21, 2023 from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM at The Main Place, 251 Main St., Hornell, NY.

Erin Kinney – 36 – of 76 Adams Ave., Hornell, died unexpectedly on Wednesday (July 5, 2023) at her home.

Born in Chicago, IL on March 14, 1987, she was the daughter of James & Deborah (McGrane) Ludwig.

Erin resided in many locations during her childhood including South Dansville and was a graduate of Wayland-Cohocton Central School (class of 2006). She has resided in the Hornell area for the past 10 ½ years.

She was employed as a Home Health Care Aid for Freedom Care of Rochester, working primarily in the Hornell area. She enjoyed arts & crafts, working on puzzles and building with LEGOS. She was fortunate to have been able to visit the LEGO Store on 5th Ave. in New York City four years ago.

Having physical disabilities since birth, Erin canine companion was her Service Dog, Samuel Reid Kinney, a St. Bernard & English Mastiff mix. Together they would take daily 10 mile walks. Erin, along with her husband, Scott, traveled with the Service Dog, Samuel to Ohio for training & certification. They also traveled to Kentucky and South Carolina to visit family and to Washington, DC, New York City and Canada simply vacationing and “site-seeing.” Throughout the years, they have taken Samuel on busses, trains and subways. Erin also had a deep affection for all animals and, throughout the years, rescued several cats that were in need of help.

She was married on October 13, 2012 to Scott Kinney who survives. Also surviving are 4 daughters, AlyssiaMay Kinney, MaggieMay Kinney, Willow Kinney and Sarahlynn Kinney; her parents, Jim & Debra Ludwig of Lyman, SC.

Blanche D. (Swain) Evingham Houghtaling – 76 – of 22½ Hakes Ave., Hornell, died unexpectedly Friday afternoon (June 30, 2023) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Born in Hornell on January 11, 1947, she was the daughter of Orin & Harriet (Chase) Swain.

Blanche grew up in the Wayland – Dansville areas and attended Wayland Central School and Dansville High School.

She had been employed for a time tying grapes at the Naples Vineyards. Moving to Hornell in 1964, she worked as a seamstress at the former Marion Rohr Corporation for several years before becoming a “Stay-At-Home” mom.

Blanche loved the time that she spent in her kitchen and will be remembered for her delicious cookies that she baked and gave away during the holiday seasons. She had a deep affection for animals and, throughout the years, enjoyed the company of many pet dogs & cats. Blanche also enjoyed crafts and loved crocheting and making other items such as candles and “wind spinners.” A self-proclaimed “Shop-A-Holic,” Blanche loved both attending & hosting yard sales and testing her luck by purchasing lottery tickets.

In addition to her parents, Blanche was preceded in death by her son, Mark Evingham; her great-grandson, Jasper Baldwin; her siblings, Orin Swain Jr., Margaret Cook, Ellen Cook, Eileen Cook, Donald Cook, Brad Cook & Glen Cook,

Surviving are her husband, Lee Houghtaling; 2 daughters, Pamela “Pam” (William) Denning of Dansville and Holly Smith of Missouri; 2 sons, Michael Evingham of Canisteo and Dale Evingham of Hornell; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews, including her “Special Niece,” Glenda Wise of Tennessee.

Paul R. George – 78 – of 34 Sawyer St. Site, Hornell, died unexpectedly Sunday evening (June 25, 2023) at the Steuben Center for Rehabilitation in Bath, NY.

Born in Hornell on April 26, 1945, he was the son of Henry & Helena (Ferrin) George.

Paul grew up in Almond, NY and attended Alfred-Almond Central School.  He grew up on the family farm and worked the farm passionately until it was sold in the late 1990s.

Paul had been a communicant of St. Brendan’s Church of Almond.  He was an avid NASCAR fan and also enjoyed fishing.  He was a true outdoorsman who, in his younger years, enjoyed camping, hunting and motorcycle riding.  Paul often talked about taking “road trips” with his brothers.  In recent years he simply loved going for a long drive throughout the countryside and appreciating the beauty of “Mother Nature.”  Paul loved spending time watching old westerns on TV, his favorite being Gunsmoke.  His greatest joy, however, was simply spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He had been married and divorced to the former Linda Willis with whom he remained friends until her death in 2017.  On January 8, 2005 Paul married the former Michelle “Mickey” Carlton who died in 2013.  He was also preceded in death by his brother, John George; his nephew, Frankie George; his sister-in-law, Sylvia George; his “feathered friend,” Rocky; several aunts & uncles.

Surviving are his daughter, Amanda (Richard Stevens) George of Hornell; 3 sons, Jason George of Ballston Spa, NY, Joshua George of Hornell and Jacob (Kim Bancroft) George of Hornell; 12 siblings, Nick (Patsy) George, Frank (Eunice Darnell) George, Joann George, Rosie George, Polly (Steve) Mehlenbacher, Edward (Laurie) George, Philip (Cathy) George, Charlie George, Chris (Debbie) George, Theresa George, Lucy George and Jessie (Kevin) Howe; his grandchildren, Jamie VanValkenburg, Cody George, Danielle Stromsness, Syble Billings, Logan Bancroft, Emily Bancroft, Kasey George and Jacob Dawson George;  many nieces & nephews.

Harold J. Cudney JR – 64 – of West Washington St., Bath, died unexpectedly on Monday (June 12, 2023) at his home.

Born in the Bronx, NY on August 31, 1958, he was the son of Harold & Grace (Carlucci) Cudney.

He was a Veteran of the US Army, serving his country in 1977.  He resided in the Bronx during his younger years and later lived on Long Island.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Cudney and his sister, Caroline O’Dell.

Surviving are his son, Harold Cudney JR; his daughter, Grace Cudney; 3 sisters, Arlene Sexton, Loraine Cudney and Virginia Lamas; along with several nieces & nephews.

There will be no calling hours.  Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
