Rose S. Conine – 89 – a resident of Elderwood at Hornell, formerly of 23 Adsit St. Hornell died unexpectedly Friday morning (June 3, 2016) at St. James Mercy Hospital.

Born in Hornell on July 13, 1926, she was the daughter of Angelo & Josephine (Marino) Cartella.

Rose grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1944). Throughout the years, she had been employed at various businesses including Woolworths Department Store, Corbin Wood Products and also served as a cook at the Hornell Children’s Home. For many years she owned & operated Riverside Pet Shop in Hornell.

She was a former member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. In recent years she attended the Free Methodist Church of Hornell. Rose had been a member of the Hornell VFW and also the Hornell IOOF.

Rose was and avid bingo player and, in her younger years, would play five or six nights a week. She also loved playing cards — especially euchre. She thoroughly enjoyed her Sunday Euchre Club.
She was an ardent supporter of the Fresh Air Fund hosting many children over the years.
She enjoyed trips to many locations with her senior group, once even meeting Michael Jackson.

She was married on December 30, 1958 to Clarence “Ray” Conine who died January 31, 2013. She was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Mary Andrezzi and Angeline “Angie” Eason; 1 brother, Peter “Pete” Cartella.

Surviving are 3 sons, Alan (Becky) Conine of Rochester, Andy (Kathy) Conine of Hornell and Charlie Conine of Rochester; 1 sister, Josie Brown of Hornell; 3 brothers, Julio (Nancy) Cartella, Carl (Mary) Cartella and Francis “Lou” (Beth) Cartella, all of Hornell; 4 grandchildren, Kirsten (Evan) Cogansparger, Marissa (Ryan) Goodwin, Michael Conine and Kyle Conine; 5 great-grandchildren; many nieces & nephews.

Thomas A. “Tom” Rohan – 85 – of 250 Grand St., Hornell, died Thursday evening (May 26, 2016) at Rochester General Hospital following a brief illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, he was born September 3, 1930, and was the son of John & Gladys (Crosby) Rohan.
Tom attended Hornell High School but left school to join the US Army. He served his country from 1948-1950.

Following his honorable discharge from the military, Tom began working at the Erie Railroad and later the Erie Lackawanna Railroad as a “signalman”, a position he held until his retirement in 1972. After his “retirement” from the railroad, Tom worked for John Gemmell as a carpet installer.

From 1976-1997, Tom was employed at the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) as a member of the Bridge Crew. For many years he also served as a bartender at the Southside Grill and the Hornell Elks Lodge.

Tom was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and had been a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church where he was a member of the St. Ignatius Choir. In recent years, he was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.

He was a 40+ member of the Hornell Elks Lodge; and several other local organizations including the Hornell Legion, the Moose, the Association and the AMVETS. As a member of the Hornell American Legion, Tom served on the Color Guard and in 1964 actually performed at the World’s Fair in New York City.

In his younger days Tom bowled and was an avid horse racing fan. He loved watching sports and was a big fan of the Yankees and Bills. He also had an endless collection of movies and memorabilia of his favorite actor John Wayne.

He was married on January 16, 1953 in Rochester, NY to the former Ann Marie Phillips who died in 2013. Tom was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Arlene Robinson and Barbara Norton; and 3 brothers, Joseph Rohan, William Rohan and Jack Rohan.

He is survived by 4 sons, Timothy (Doreen) Rohan of Rochester, Mark (Barbara) Rohan of Nashua, NH, Edward (Stacy) Rohan of Windsor, NY and Thomas (Kathy) Rohan of Mesquite, TX; 1 daughter, Michelle (Douglas) Shinebarger of San Diego, CA; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; many nieces & nephews.

Carolyn M. Penwarden – 79 – of West Lake Rd, Hammondsport, NY (Keuka Lake) and Bradenton, FL died Tuesday afternoon (May 17, 2016) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester following a brief illness.

Born in Hannibal, MO on June 16, 1936, she was the daughter of William & Dorothy (Simpson) Harding SR.

Carolyn grew up in Hannibal and was a graduate of Hannibal High School (class of 1954). Following graduation from high school, she enlisted in the US Army where she served her country from 1954 – 1956. While stationed at Ft. Riley, KS she met her future husband, Brent Penwarden who was also serving in the military. They were married on May 22, 1956 while still serving in the US Army.

They resided in Buffalo, NY for several years while Brent attended the University of Buffalo School of Medicine. After serving his medical internship in the US Army at Fort Benning, GA, Carolyn & Dr. Penwarden returned to Buffalo while he served his residency at EJ Meyer Memorial Hospital from 1962 – 1965.

In 1965, they moved to Canisteo where he began his private practice and working at St. James Mercy Hospital and Bethesda Community Hospital. For several years Carolyn was a “stay at home” mom and was kept busy raising their family. In 1973, Dr. Penwarden moved his practice and family to Hornell. For the next 26 years, Carolyn helped in the daily operation of his medical office.

In recent years, Carolyn lived at their Cottage at Keuka Lake during the summer months and in Bradenton, FL during the winter. She was a member of the Keuka Yacht Club and in her younger years loved racing sailboats and in recent years simply enjoyed “cruising the lake.” Carolyn also enjoyed sewing & crocheting and in years past liked to get together with friends to do a little “clogging.” She was an avid bowler and throughout the years bowled in several bowling leagues. Carolyn and her husband enjoyed traveling and had traveled to many locations such as Spain, Scotland, the Caribbean, and the Bahamas. She had been a member of the Hornell American Legion and in recent years she had been a member of the Hammondsport Harvest Baptist Church.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Brent Penwarden who died April 26, 2010; her brothers, William Harding III and Leslie Harding.

Surviving are her children, Brent (Ann) Penwarden III of Fairport, Lynne (Bill) Cardamone of South Daytona, FL, Bronwyn Penwarden of Port Orange, FL, Alison (Joe, Jr) Frissora of Binghamton and John (Melissa) Penwarden of Enola, PA; one brother, Terry (Joanne) Harding of Connecticut; 8 grandchildren, Brent Penwarden IV, Michael Cardamone, Carolyn Grunder, Joseph Frissora III, Anthony Frissora, John Michael Frissora, Ian Penwarden and Maeghan Penwarden; several nieces & nephews.

At Carolyn’s request there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Hammondsport, NY.

James R. Crissy – (83) of 7329 County Route 65 (North Main Street Ext.) died Thursday evening (May 12, 2016) at his home following a long illness.

Born in Rochester, NY, on January 15, 1933, he was the son of Roy & Clara (Mondzielewski) Crissy. He had resided in Buffalo, NY for many years and has lived in the Hornell area since 1961.

Jim was a Veteran of the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was employed for about 40 years at the former Erie, Erie Lackawanna, Conrail and D&H Railroads retiring in 1996 as an engineer.

A communicant of St. Brendan’s Church of Almond and a former member of St. Ann’s Church, Jim had served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years. He was a member of the Hornell Knights of Columbus, Hornell VFW and a member of All Vets.

Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Rev. Roy Crissy; his sister, Sr. Mary Ann Crissy (Sisters of Namur); and his grandson, Alexander James Crissy.

He was married in Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawanna, NY, to the former Sarah A. “Sally” McDonald who died January 30, 2007.

Edna M. Hering – (71) – of 740 North Almond Valley Rd, Arkport, NY formerly of 5 Oak Hill Road, Arkport, died at her home following a long illness.

Born in Sherman, WV on June 30, 1944, she was the daughter of Jasper & Sylvia (Anderson) Bennett.

At the age of seven, Edna moved to Kendall, NY where she attended school. She resided in Waterport, NY for most of her adult life where employed as a custodian at Albion Central School and also drove school bus for the Albion School District. She has resided in Hornell since 2009.

Edna enjoyed fishing, gardening, needlepoint, playing banjo and traveling, especially to the 1000 Islands.

She was married to Harry Hering who died in 1973 at the age of 29. She was also preceded in death by 4 brothers, Elmer Bennett, Jasper “Junior” Bennett, Raymond Bennett and Charles Bennett; 3 sisters, Ruth Ann Smith, Mildred Marie Miller and Genevieve Baker; and her long time companion, Arthur Russell Williams.

Surviving are her children, Kenneth (Lynette) Hering of Albion, Edward Hering of Albion and Sherry Ann (Rick Flurschutz) Hering of Arkport; 1 sister, Wilda Fay (Andrew) Moyer of Kendall; 5 grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

Jacqueline “Jackie” France Dennis – 72 – of 27 Ransom St., Hornell, died Tuesday morning (May 10, 2016) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a brief illness.

Born in Hornell on August 26, 1943, she was the daughter of George & Congetta (LaFaro) France.

Jackie grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School (Class of 1963). In 1978 she graduated from Monroe Community College with an administrative degree and a nursing degree.

Residing in Rochester for about 27 years, Jackie had been employed as a registered nurse at St. Ann’s Nursing Facility for many years and later worked as a night nurse at the Henrietta County Jail. She later served as Nursing Supervisor at the Warsaw Hospital.

Returning to Hornell about 14 years ago, Jackie was employed as a Registered Nurse at a local Nursing Home and later in the “Grandmother Program” in the Hornell School System.

Jackie was an avid bingo player and enjoyed serving as a “caller” during the bingo games at the Hornell VFW. She had a deep appreciation of butterflies and collected anything associated with butterflies, such as jewelry, ornaments, decorations, clothing, flags, and hair accents. All-in-all she had collected thousands of butterfly artifacts during her fifty-plus years of collecting.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Dennis and also by her sister, Elizabeth Vigneri.

Surviving are 1 daughter, Elia (Anthony) Santos of Acworth, GA; 1 son, George (Rachel) Dennis of Rochester; 6 grandchildren, Angela Marie (Paul Parker) DiFrancesca, Gabriella (Corey) Carnes, Ashley Dwyer, Serena Dennis, Rebecca Dennis, Anthony Dennis and; 5 great-grandchildren, Conner, Carmelo, McKenzie, Rosalina & Skyler; many nieces & nephews.

Richard J. “Dick” Schieder – (90) – of 79 Genesee St., Hornell, died Sunday morning (May 8, 2016) at his home following a long illness.

A native & live resident of Hornell, he was born September 3, 1925, and was the son of George & Agnes (Lang) Schieder.

Dick was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1943). He had been employed as an accountant at the Erie Accounting Bureau for over 20 years, retiring in 1968.

At the tender age of 40, Dick decided to continue his education, enrolling at Alfred University, majoring in Art. Following graduation, he continued his post-graduate work at Alfred, earning his teaching degree.

Dick was employed as administrator for the Hornell Area Arts Council for 2 years and also served as a substitute school teacher for several years.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. He was a former member of the Carducci Lodge (Sons of Italy), Hornell Lions Club, Hornell Association, Knights of Columbus and Hornell Moose Lodge. Dick possessed a genuine love of music and was the author of many songs. He was an avid glass collector, gardener and enjoyed painting.

Dick was married in 1972 to the former Josephine Trentanelli who died February 16, 2005. He was also preceded in death by 7 brothers & sisters.

Surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins & in-laws.

Thomas R. “Tom”  LaClair – 68 – a resident of Elderwood at Hornell (formerly McAuley Manor) died Monday morning (April 25, 2016) following a long illness.

Born in Rochester, NY, on April 1, 1948, he was the son of Gerald & Doris (Campbell) LaClair.

Tom lived in Fairport in his younger years and throughout the years resided in several locations, including Athens, PA, Bennington, NY, Attica, NY and Hornell.

He was a deeply religious person and had been a member of the Methodist Church.  He will be missed by his many friends at Elderwood at Hornell.

Surviving are 3 brothers, Gerald LaClair of Rochester, Donald LaClair of Newport Richie, FL and James LaClair of Palmyra, NY; 2 nephews, John LaClair and Jesse LaClair.

Cheryl Ambrose Green – 67 – of Hornell, died Sunday afternoon (April 24, 2016) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a long illness.

Born in Sewickley, PA on July 27, 1948, she was the daughter of Richard & Mary (Goode) Ambrose.

Cheryl grew up in Aliquippa, PA and was a graduate of Hopewell High School (class of 1966). Following high school, she graduated from Beaver County Community College in Freedom PA and later received her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Piedmont Bible College in Winston-Salem, NC.

Serving as a volunteer in the V.I.S.T.A. program (the domestic version of the Peace Corp), Cheryl was assigned to Hornell in 1970. She had been employed briefly at Crowley Dairy in Arkport and also at the Hornell March of Dimes or Hornell. Cheryl began working at the Hornell Housing Authority in July 1980 as a temporary employee and became a permanent employee in November of 1981. She retired from her position as Tenant Relations Assistant in July 2013.

Cheryl was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church where she served in many capacities, including Deacon and office volunteer. She was an avid reader, enjoyed cooking and loved rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Team.

She will be remembered as a woman who loved helping anyone in need, whether it be family or friend. CHERYL WAS THE ROCK ON WHICH HER FAMILY STOOD!

Cheryl was married on March 30, 1985 to Fredrick Green who died November 23, 2001.

Surviving are her sister, Alice (Michael) Nestor of Aliquippa, PA; her brother, Richard (LeAnn) Ambrose of Evans City, PA; her in-laws, Timothy & Mary Green of Wesley, MA and Katherine Green of Hornell; several nieces, including Mary Nestor of Aliquippa, PA; and will be sadly missed by her dear friends, Paul Virgo, Eileen Hamelin, Gary & Kathy Foster, all of Hornell along with her “four legged boy, Cooper.”

Henry Schlossberg – 92 – of Arkport, formerly of North Hornell, died, early Sunday morning (April 10, 2016) at St. James Mercy Hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Brooklyn on June 30, 1923, he was the son of Abe and Ida (Gassner) Schlossberg.

Henry grew up in Brooklyn, a graduate of Tilden High School, where he met Libby Ginsburg in what she described as a “Harry met Sally” moment. He was a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, selling hot dogs at Ebbets Field from a young age.

He and Libby, along with two children, moved to Hornell in 1953, where he established and managed Marion Rohr Manufacturing Corp for 40 years. He then worked as the payroll manager for Covered Wagon Tours until his death.

An accomplished pilot from age 23, he later became a flight instructor and was awarded by the FAA and the AOPA for his lifetime perfect safety record. With then Hornell doctor B.J. McClanahan, in the late 60s, he co-founded the American Bonanza Society—today the world’s largest private flying organization.

Henry was a boating instructor with the Power Squadron and was also fond of ballroom dancing, skiing, boating, horseback riding, and SCUBA; coaching and encouraging his children, grandchildren and many of their friends in these and other sports.

A member of Hornell’s Temple Beth-El, he supported many charitable organizations around the area, including volunteering for the Civil Air Patrol and giving rides in support of “Airport Days” in Hornell and Dansville. He was instrumental in persuading 1970’s Governor Nelson Rockefeller to visit and spend funds improving Hornell’s airport.

Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Libby, who was always a willing partner in his flying adventures. A longtime lover of big band music and jazz, their marriage in December, 1944 in Brooklyn, was attended by renowned Cantor/Singer Richard Tucker and the Andrews Sisters.

Henry is survived by daughters, Sandra Messing, formerly of Rochester, NY, Maddy (Richard) Lawler, of East Hampton, NY, and son William (Robin) Schlossberg of Stamford, CT; four grandchildren, Risa (Ryan) Milne, Adam (Anna) Lawler, Lisa Lawler, and Daniel Schlossberg; and three great-grandchildren, Amelia Milne, Max Milne, and Reagan Lawler.

In addition to his wife, Libby, Henry is also pre-deceased by three sisters, Lillian Pearl, Renee Mish, and Ruth Oshins from the New York City area; and by several nieces and nephews with whom he was very close.

The family of Henry Schlossberg will receive friends on Tuesday (April 12th, 2016) from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church Street, Hornell. Henry will be interred at a private ceremony alongside Libby, at Beth-El Cemetery.
