Margaret M. Karns – (99) – formerly of 22 East Ave., Arkport died  Friday afternoon (april 4, 2014) at Hornell Gardens, where she had resided for the past five years.

Born in Dansville, NY, on March 15, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Clara VanDurme.  She was a graduate of Dansville Central School and the Federal Commercial School of Hornell, NY.

In 1939, she was married to Earl S. Karns who died on March 27, 1998.  She, along with her husband, owned & operated Karns’ Repair Shop in Arkport. 

In addition to her husband and parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her son, John Karns; 4 brothers, John VanDurme, Raymond VanDurme, Louis VanDurme and Nick VanDurme; 2 sisters, Mary Hurlburt and Alice Randall; her son-in-law, Douglas FitzMaurice; her step-son-in-law, Don Roach; along with several in-laws

Surviving are four daughters, Sandra (Ralph) Rice of Addison, Nancy FitzMaurice of Virginia,  Peggy Williams of Fremont, and Susan (William) Wyant of Waterloo, NY; one son, James (Linda) Karns of Wellsville; 1 step daughter, Patricia Roach; 1 sister, Loretta Daniels of Dansville; 3 brothers, Richard VanDurme, Larry VanDurme, Phil VanDurme, all of Dansville; her daughter-in-law, Roma Karns of Ontario, NY; several in-laws, grandchildren; great-grandchildren great-great-grandchildren; nieces & nephews.

William  G.  “Bill” Stone Sr., a resident of the Veterans’ Administration Facility in Bath, NY, went home to be with the Lord on April 3, 2014.  Mr. Stone was born on March 7, 1920, in Elmira, NY, to Sydney Stone and Louise Stone Sechrist.  He was twice married, first to Dorothy Dodge Stone and secondly to Carmella (Betty) Ladonne Stone.

Bill graduated from Elmira Southside High School with the class of 1939.  William was selected to be a member of the Chemung County Sports Hall of Fame for his participation and excellence in the sports of wrestling and boxing.

 He enlisted in the U.S. Army prior to World War II.  He was deployed with the 9th Infantry Division during World War II, where he served as a staff sergeant, and saw action in the European, African, and Middle Eastern Campaigns.   He received medals including medals for Good Conduct and a Bronze Star for heroic and meritorious achievement.

Richard Carl Dugo – 67 – of Sun City, AZ, formerly of Hornell, passed away Friday (December 13, 2013) following a long illness.

He was born August 4, 1946 in Hornell, NY to Joseph and Madeline (Franzone) Dugo who preceded him in death.

Richard grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1965).  He moved to Arizona in 1992 where he met and married his wife, Susan. They spent over 20 wonderful years together traveling and golfing prior to his succumbing to illness.

He leaves behind his best friend and wife, Susan, his beloved daughter Kimberly Dugo of Arizona; his wonderful sister Alberta (Jon) Cleveland of Hornell and their daughter, Pamela (Eric) Mendel of Geneseo, NY.

The family of Richard Carl Dugo will receive friends on Saturday (March 5, 2014) from 10:30 AM until 11:30 AM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  A Memorial Service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 11:30 AM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.  Final interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetetry

David J. Studley – (61) – of 13 Main St., Almond, died Monday afternoon (March 31, 2014) at his home, following a long illness.

Born in North Hornell on April 15, 1952, he was the son of Richard & Eileen (Alexander) Studley.

Dave grew up in Almond and attended Alfred-Almond Central School.  He was a veteran of the US Navy, serving his country from 1969-1971 and again from 1973-1975.  While in the US Navy, he was stationed in Naples, Italy running supplies to Navy ships in the Mediterranean Sea.

He worked for a time on the “rail gangs” at the former Erie Lackawanna Railroad and Conrail; as an electrician at Alfred University; and for Steuben County Buildings & Grounds.  For nearly 40 years Dave was employed as a truck driver for several local businesses including Crowley’s Dairy, Covered Wagon, Southern Tier Concrete, Giles Trucking, Wegmans Express and AL Blades.

Judy A. Murphy – 67 – of 396 Karr Valley Rd., Almond, died late Sunday evening (March 30, 2014 at the Vincent House in Wayland, surrounded by her loving family and following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on October 6, 1946, she was the daughter of Charles & Marion (Hoffman) Henshaw.

Judy grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1964).  She was a former member of St. Ignatius Loyola Church and most recently attended St. Ann’s Church.

Having a deep love of children, Judy operated “Judy’s Day Care” for about 20 years, retiring about 10 years ago.  She lived the these words: “One hundred years from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house that I live in or the kind of car that I drove.  But the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child” (author unknown). 

Judy enjoyed working on her home — not only basic up-keep, but also major construction & remodeling.  This included the planning phase, purchasing of materials and actual construction.  She also was an avid gardener and loved working in her flower garden, vegetable garden and planting trees in her yard.

She was preceded in death by her son, Thomas M. Murphy who died in 1987; her grandson, Connor Patrick Murphy who died in 2007 and her sister, Diane Helgerson.

Judy was married on March 20, 1965 to Thomas “Tom” Murphy who survives.  Also surviving are
2 sons, David Murphy of Hornell and John (Kelly) Murphy of Hornell; 1 daughter, Kelly (Maryann Cryan) Murphy of Hornell; 2 brothers, Charles (Anna) Henshaw of Kingman, AZ and Ronald (Josephine) Henshaw of Crossville, TN; 1 sister, Marlene (Richard) Abbott of Belmont, NY; 4 granddaughters, Kaley Murphy, Delaney Murphy, Madison Murphy and Melissa Murphy; several nieces & nephews.

The family of Judy A. Murphy will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday at St. Ann’s Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The Murphy family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Vincent House in Wayland for making Judy’s last days on earth comfortable and pain free.  Their kindness will never be forgotten.

Joseph E. Donovan, Jr. – 59 – died early Wednesday morning (March 19, 2014).   “Uncle Joe” or “Cowboy”, as he is known to his friends and family, passed away in Greenwood, where he resided since retiring.  His friend Betty was by his side.
 
He was born in Syracuse on September 2, 1954 and was the beloved son of Kathryn and the late Joseph Donovan.
 
Joe was blessed with several nieces and nephews.  Uncle Joe loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He taught many of his nieces and nephews to ride quads and to hunt. His farm, as he called it, was his joy and he wanted all to share in it.
 
In addition to his mother, Kathryn, he is survived by his sisters Claire Cummings, Mary Farkas, Debbie Malfitano, Kara Donegan, Teresa Schofield; brothers Jerry, Patrick and David.

He is reunited with his best friend and brother, Michael, who passed away in 2009.

Luella A. VanScoter – (82) – a resident of Hornell Gardens, formerly of 353 Ontario St., Hornell died Monday evening (March 17, 2014) at St. James Hospital following a brief illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, she was born June 24, 1931 and was the daughter of Olmstead & Adell (Colley) VanScoter.

Luella attended Hornell High School and was later employed as a waitress at several local restaurants, including Jumbo’s, Big Elms and Country Kitchen.  She was had been employed for many years as a machine operator at the former SKF Industries in Hornell  and for about 5 years she operated a Children’s Day Care out of her home. 

In her younger years, Luella enjoyed bowling and was an avid bingo player in her later years.  She was devoted to her family and actually helped raise her brothers & sisters.  She was later blessed with a large family of 11 children.

Kevin W. Burch – 57 – of 473 Bishopville Ext., Arkport, NY died Monday morning (March 17, 2014) at his home, following a courageous four year battle with cancer.

Born in Wellsville, NY on June 6, 1956, he was the son of William & Bonnie Burch.

Kevin grew up in Bolivar where he lived until 1971 when his family moved to Hornell.  He was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1974).

Following his high school graduation, Kevin began working for his father as a salesman at Maple City Dodge in Hornell.  He continued his role as salesman for over 40 years and on January 1st, 2008, following his father’s retirement, he, along with his friend, Gary Harwood, purchased the dealership.  He has served as president of the company since that time.

Cynthia E. “Cindy” McGregor – 61 – of 26 ½ Greenwood St., Canisteo, died early Saturday morning (March 8, 2014) at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA following a long illness.

Born in North Hornell on March 9, 1952, she was the daughter of Robert & Marjorie (Payne) Hadley.

Cindy grew up in Jasper and was a graduate of Jasper High School (class of 1970).  She later earned her Practical Nurse’s License through the Hornell BOCES Program.  She was employed as an LPN for several years at Bethesda Community Hospital, Noyes Memorial Hospital, Hornell Gardens and Home Health Care.

She was married on April 28, 1973 to Gordon “Gordy” McGregor who survives.  Also surviving are 1 son, Seth (Jenny Stephens) McGregor of Hornell; 1 daughter, Kristen (William) Lain of Canisteo; 3 brothers, Dean (Myrna) Hadley of Hornell, Steve Hadley of Rochester and Randy (Liz) Hadley of Jasper; 2 sisters, Debbie (Carlin) Stephens of Jasper and Lori Drake of Canisteo; 4 grandchildren, Shelby Derck, Morgan McGregor, Aaron Lain and Abigail Lain; several nieces & nephews.

Mary Rose Daniels – (94) – formerly of 44 Davenport St., Hornell died Monday morning (March 3, 2014) at Latta Road Nursing Facility where she had resided for the past year.

Born in Hornell on June 22, 1919 and was the daughter of Frank & Catherine (Surra) DeGaetano.

Mary grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later attended Hornell High School.  She was employed for several years at the former Dolores Dress Factory and later at the former Cameo Shop in Hornell.  For several years Mary worked for her brother at DeGaetano’s Shoe Store in Hornell.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a member of St. Ann’s Church where, in her younger years, taught Religious Education classes.  She was a life member of the G. Carducci Lodge (Sons of Italy).  Mary enjoyed spending time in her kitchen — cooking & baking — and was well known for her delicious cakes.
