Marguerite Lorraine Cullen – (89) – a resident of McAuley Manor, went to Heaven Wednesday morning (January 9, 2013) following a long illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, she was born Christmas Eve 1923 to William & Cecelia (Horton) Furlong.

Marguerite attended Hornell High School, Class of 42 and later earned her Nurse’s Aide Certificate.  Throughout the years, she worked as a “Private Duty Care Giver” and also was employed at Hornell Gardens & Clancy’s Nursing homes.

She had been a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church and more recently was a communicant of
St. Ann’s Church. 

In her younger years, Marguerite was a tap dancer and actually won $100 in a tap-dancing contest in Hornell in 1937.  She enjoyed playing bingo and also liked to make an occasional wager at OTB.  Mostly she will be remembered as a loving and caring Mother and Grandmother. Affectionately, known as “Gigi” and “Gramma Maggie”

Michael E. Foley – 58 – of Whittier, CA, formerly of Rochester, died Friday (January 4, 2013) following a long illness.

Born in Rochester, NY on August 22, 1954, he was the son of Michael & Alpha “Jean” (Howe) Foley.  His mother, Jean, was a former resident of Arkport.

Mike resided in Rochester until the age of three and has lived in California for the past 55 years.  He was a graduate of Monte Vista High School in Whittier, CA.  He was employed at Allied Signal for about 20 years and has worked as equipment manager for Kee Action Sports for about 15 years. 

In his younger years, Mike was active in Boy Scouts of America.  He enjoyed the sport of paint ball and has won many awards for his efforts in paint ball competitions.  He loved to travel all around the world and liked all kinds of music and enjoyed playing the accordion. Although Mike was not a hunter, enjoyed owning guns and target shooting.  

Angelina P. “Angie” Lisi – (90) – of 52 Church St., Hornell, died Monday evening (January 7, 2013) at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

A native & life resident of Hornell, she was born August 4, 1922 and was the daughter of Constantino & Rose (Colomarino) Pardi.

Angie was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1940).  She was employed for several years as a secretary & receptionist for Dr. Taylor in Hornell and later worked in the x-ray department of St. James Mercy Hospital.  For over 25 years, Angie was employed as a telephone operator for the former New York Telephone Company, retiring in 1980.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  Angie was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Sons of Italy and also a former member of the Telephone Pioneers.  She enjoyed cooking & baking and simply taking care of her family.

Luella D. Smith – (95) – formerly of 10 McDougall Ave., died Sunday afternoon (January 6, 2013) at Updyke’s Willow Ridge Quality Care Facility where she has resided for the past two years.

Born in Perry, NY on October 30, 1917, she was the daughter of Lloyd & Alberta (Drew) Hoyt.

Luella was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1935).  In 1956 she was hired as the very first Teacher’s Aid in Hornell, working at the former Irving School, where she later became a secretary.  She served as Hornell City Court Clerk for 15 years, retiring March 31, 1983.

Following her “retirement”, Luella spent the next 15 years volunteering her time as a Teacher’s Aid at St. Ann’s School, often working with children “one-on-one”.  She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  She was active in the Hornell Alumni Association and had been a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Ladies of Columbus, Women’s Democratic Party and had served as director of the Hornell American Red Cross.

Paul E. Griswold – (79) – formerly of 71 Church St. Court, Hornell, died Sunday morning (January 6, 2013) at McAuley Manor where he had resided for the past 6 years.

A native & life resident of Hornell, he was born January 13, 1933, and was the son of Harold & Florence (Dougherty) Griswold.

Paul was a graduate of Hornell High School and later received his Associate’s Degree in Science from Alfred State College. 

He was employed for a short time at the former Erie Railroad and also the Hornell Evening Tribune.  For many years he served as “desk clerk” for the Hornell YMCA, retiring in 1982. 

He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  He was also a life member of the Hornell Knights of Columbus.

Roland D. Hale – 82 – formerly of Hamilton Hill Rd., Alfred Station, died Sunday afternoon (December 30, 2012) in Chicago, IL, where he has resided for the past 3 years.

Born in Oakfield, NY on May 24, 1931, he was the son of Edward & Eda (Bossler) Hale.

Roland grew up in Oakfield and was a graduate of Oakfield High School (class of 1947).  He attended Buffalo State College for 1 year before enlisting in the US Navy.  He served his country for 4 years during the Korean Conflict before being honorably discharged.

Following his discharge from the US Navy, Roland returned to Buffalo State College where he earned his Teaching Degree and also a Degree in Chemistry & General Science.  He later earned his Master’s Degree in Chemistry.

Ferdinando L. “Fred” Giovanniello – 70 – of 23 Pine St., Hornell, died unexpectedly Wednesday (January 2, 2012) at his home.

Born in Italy on April 10, 1942, he was the son of Americo & Pasqualina (Capozzi) Giovanniello.

Fred has resided in the United States since he was 14 years old.  He lived in Brooklyn for several years and on Long Island for many years.  He has resided in Hornell for over 25 years.

He enjoyed bowling and for several years bowled for Giovanni’s Team.  Fred loved gardening (both flower garden and vegetable garden) and also enjoyed woodworking. 

Eva A. Grimm – (70) – of 29 Cottage Ave., Hornell, formerly of Hill St., died Sunday afternoon (December 23, 2012) at her home following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on October 23, 1942, she was the daughter of Harold & Eunice (Moore) Graham and the step-daughter of Roy Graber.

Eva grew up in Hornell, Buffalo and Addison and was a graduate of Addison High School (class of 1961).  She later attended St. James School of Nursing and for a time was employed as a nurse’s aide at St. James Hospital.

She was a former member of United Presbyterian Church and had been a member of the Hornell VFW, AMVETS, American Legion, Hornell Association and the Hornell Moose Lodge.  She enjoyed cooking, crocheting and spending time with her family.

Rose M. LaFaro – (92) – a resident of Hornell Gardens, formerly of 13 Sawyer St. Site, Hornell, died early Monday morning (December 24, 2012) at Highland Hospital in Rochester, following a brief illness.

A native & livelong resident of Hornell, she was born March 6th, 1920, and was the daughter of George & Anna (DeSteffano) LaFaro.  Rose attended Bryant School and later Hornell High School.  She had been employed as a dietitian’s helper for about 5 years at the original Bethesda Hospital and later was employed as a cook for 28 years by several Hornell Restaurants, including the Hotel Sherwood, Ponce DeLeon and the Sunset Inn, retiring in 1979.

John N. “Floyd” Dugo – 63 – of 6948 Dennis Ave. Ext., Hornell, died Monday afternoon (December 17, 2012) at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA following a long illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, he was born July 23, 1949 and was the son of John & Marie (Parmelee) Dugo.

Floyd was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1967) where he excelled on the football field, playing for the Hornell Red Raiders.  Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps where he honorably served his country from 1968 – 1971.  While stationed in Viet Nam, Floyd served in communications as a radio operator.  During his military service, he received numerous medals, including the Viet Nam Cross Gallantry with Palm and the Combat Action Ribbon.

He was employed for about 35 years at the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) as an engineer, retiring about 5 years ago.  He was a member of the Hornell American Legion.
